Work of Art: The Next Great Artist Trivia Questions

1. In the first challenge, the artists were required to paint portraits of their fellow competitors. Why was Amanda eliminated for her piece?

From Quiz
"Work of Art: The Next Great Artist" Season 1

Answer: It was too abstract

To begin this competition, fourteen artists were tasked with creating a portrait of one of their peers; each would be randomly matched with one of their colleagues and they would need to properly represent the personalities of their competition. The winner of the first challenge was Miles, whose attempt at creating a death portrait of performance artist, Nao, proved to be the best-received representation. Amanda, who painted an abstract 'portrait' of Jaime Lynn but missed the mark entirely, was said by one of the critics to have not actually painted a portrait because it was way too unconventional.

2. The third task of the season involved Pop Art. What was the twist to this challenge?

From Quiz "Work of Art: The Next Great Artist" Season 2

Answer: Two artists would be eliminated

For task three, each artist needed to create an example of Pop Art to impress the judging panel. In addition, while no one would receive immunity from this particular challenge, the winner would be given a two-page spread in "Entertainment Weekly" with their piece. This ended up being won by Young with his piece about California's Proposition 8. A number of pieces didn't click with the judges, however. Had he not had immunity from the previous task, according to the judges, Bayeté likely would've fallen to the bottom. Instead, Leon's fragmented piece about American branding and Jazz-Minh's lackluster and unclear pair of images forced them out of the running.

3. In the third task, artists needed to create book cover art. John won this challenge by creating a cover for which famous book?

From Quiz "Work of Art: The Next Great Artist" Season 1

Answer: The Time Machine

In challenge three, the artists randomly selected the topics of their next pieces and discovered that they would be creating artwork for one of six Penguin-published classics. These included "The Time Machine", "Dracula", "Frankenstein", "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", "Pride and Prejudice", and "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland". By the time their works showed in the gallery, a myriad of issues had arisen-- some artists misspelled their authors' names and others just went too far off the mark. John, whose cover for "The Time Machine" conveyed the mystery and intrigue of H. G. Wells' seminal sci-fi work, had his art placed on a Penguin book. He did not receive immunity in the next task. Judith was eliminated because, according to the judges, her attempt at spelling the title backwards would leave readers insulted.

4. In task five, Young won a task involving a "New York Times" article. What was his topic of choice?

From Quiz "Work of Art: The Next Great Artist" Season 2

Answer: The disappearance of Ai Weiwei

For task 5, the artists visited the "New York Times" and walked away with stacks of newspapers from which they could derive their next inspiration. Using a headline of their choice they would need to make a piece that would be displayed in the New York Times Building. They would also receive a cash prize. Young ended up winning the task with a series of pieces resembling blacked-out newspapers titled 'Where is Ai Weiwei?'. Bayeté became the sixth eliminated artist for his gaudy attempt at using a revival of "Sister Act 2: The Musical" as the basis of his piece.

5. For task number five, teams needed to create art based on their experiences driving around the city in which type of car?

From Quiz "Work of Art: The Next Great Artist" Season 1

Answer: Audi

With only nine artists remaining Simon de Pury took them through Manhattan to the Audi Forum in a series of brand-new Audi cars. Upon their arrival they had a half hour to compose themselves and reflect upon their experiences to conceive a new work of art. During the crit, Miles, who slept during his trip and created another piece of art about solitude and sleeplessness, and Jaclyn, who created another piece about the male gaze, were commended for their works. The win ultimately went to Jaclyn (her first) and she received immunity for the next task. Jaime Lynn's amateurish piece about 'car dancing' ended up spelling her end.

6. For the sixth challenge, the artists paired up to create what type of piece?

From Quiz "Work of Art: The Next Great Artist" Season 2

Answer: Street art

In the sixth challenge, with eight artists remaining, the competitors hit the streets and met with China Chow and Simon de Pury at the Manhattan Bridge overpass to discover their canvases would be on the side of a building. Their goal was to create the strongest piece of street art to impress the judges. Young and Dusty shared the win on this one but would not receive immunity (as immunity would no longer appear in the competition). They shared $30,000 for their victory using a piece about a conversation between the two of them. Sucklord and Sarah K.'s piece, a large-scale labyrinth, fared worst with the judges and Sucklord was eliminated after three previous appearances in the bottom.

7. Which artist was eliminated during the Fiat task (challenge #7)?

From Quiz "Work of Art: The Next Great Artist" Season 2

Answer: Michelle

For task number seven, the remaining seven artists needed to integrate parts found inside a disassembled Fiat 500 into a new work of art. This meant that all artists would be doing a sculptural piece. Sara J. won her first task with a sculptural work called "Backfire" consisting of a muffler and the inner foam of the car seats. This earned her a $25,000 reward. In the end, Michelle was eliminated for creating a work too derivative of her previous pieces and too underwhelming for the task at hand.

8. In challenge seven, the artists needed to get in touch with their inner children. Who won the task with a paper-mâché unicorn?

From Quiz "Work of Art: The Next Great Artist" Season 1

Answer: Peregrine

In this task, the artists were taken to SoHo to visit the Children's Museum of the Arts. Here, they were told that they would need to use the materials found at the studio there to create a piece that signified their interest in art. Peregrine and Nicole became the two front-runners. While Nicole made a sort-of excavation of her childhood, Peregrine created a paper-mâché unicorn, cigarettes made of painted chalk, and fake candies to represent her vibrant introduction to the San Francisco party scene. This was Peregrine's only individual challenge win throughout the challenges at the studio. Ryan became the eliminated contestant since his work was too surface-level and his track record wasn't stellar enough.

9. In challenge eight, what did teams need to do to their art to win the task (performed in pairs)?

From Quiz "Work of Art: The Next Great Artist" Season 2

Answer: Sell it

With six artists remaining, they were taken to a neighbourhood park in the city and told that they would need to work in pairs of their choice to create art that they could sell in a craft fair as well as art that could be ready for the gallery. Young and Sara J., Dusty and Kymia, and Lola and Sarah K. each created something to be worn as well as their own unique pieces to sell. The winners, Young and Sara J., ended up selling unique underwear and art as well as Sara's portraitures. As such they split $30,000 and could not be eliminated. Sarah K. ended up going home for creating simplistic hats out of construction paper.

10. In the penultimate challenge of the competition, the final five traveled to which state to collect materials for their works of art?

From Quiz "Work of Art: The Next Great Artist" Season 1

Answer: Connecticut

For the penultimate task, the five artists took a ride to New Haven Connecticut to Sherwood Island State Park so that they could gather natural materials for their challenge which involved incorporating their found objects into a piece. Two of them would be eliminated during this challenge to leave the final three. Abdi's painting using charcoal and ground, black gravel amazed the judges to give him a second challenge win. Miles also made it to the finale for an investigation of fungus using bleach and a complicated piece of machinery. Peregrine took the third spot for her natural sculpture. The eliminated contestants were Jaclyn, whose minimalist piece involving a single rock suspended in front of a horizon bored some of the judges, and Nicole, whose work used the most of her material, but failed to impress.

11. For their tenth and final task, the three remaining artists needed to spend three months creating a show for an exhibition at Phillips de Pury & Company. Which artist won the first season of the show?

From Quiz "Work of Art: The Next Great Artist" Season 1

Answer: Abdi

In the final challenge, the final three artists had three months to create enough works for an exhibition at Phillips de Pury & Company and, with Simon to inspire them, they made their way to New York City for the show. Miles came in third place with his show entitled 'And Two White Castles, That's It', based on digital photos taken by a cell phone of a surveillance camera and then pixelated in Photoshop. The pictures were an obsession of Miles' after one of the patrons on the video died two days later. Peregrine took second place with a carnival-themed show called 'Fair Game' which included (amongst other things) images of vomiting people, wax children, and a large photograph of two taxidermized fawns. Abdi became the winner of "Work of Art" season one with his show, 'Luminous Beings', which explored the "beauty of humanity". His show featured images of figures in body bags as well as religious iconography. For the win, Abdi took home $100,000 courtesy of Prismacolor, had one of his pieces auctioned off by Simon de Pury, and took his show to the Brooklyn Museum.
