PS3 Mixture Trivia Questions

1. What Namco Bandai franchise helped launch the PlayStation 3 with "Crossfire"?

From Quiz
PlayStation 3 Launch Titles

Answer: Mobile Suit Gundam

Although all of these inevitably appeared on the PlayStation 3 roster in later years, Namco Bandai's early collection on the PS3 consisted of two games, the first being "Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire", a game devoted to battling popular Gundams in war-like scenarios. Although some critics took mercy on the game, it being a launch title, it was a relatively unfavourable entry into the series and collection as a whole, mainly because it did not take advantage of the higher graphics processing and capabilities of the powerhouse system in its early days. Namco Bandai followed it up with "Dynasty Warriors: Gundam" in 2007, "Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2" in 2008 and "Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 3", in 2010 (and others in Japan, where they were more popular and better-received). They got a bit better as time went on.

2. What game involving dragon flight, originally meant to be played with integrated motion sensitivity exclusively on the SixAxis controller, was critically panned after its release?

From Quiz PlayStation 3 Exclusives

Answer: Lair

"Lair", highly anticipated since the launch of the PlayStation 3, really did not live up to the expectations held for the title. Created by former "Star Wars" game creators at Factor 5, it promised large-scale battles, all completed on the back of a dragon controlled by the player's shifting controller. If you titled the controller you were supposed to be able to tilt the same way on the dragon. While the game looked good, reviewers and players hated the imprecise control scheme. Their subsequent games on the console (and for the generation) were canned and they went defunct shortly after.

3. The seventh iteration in Namco Bandai racing series appeared on day 1 of the PS3's run. What game series, originally appearing on the PlayStation 1, was it from?

From Quiz PlayStation 3 Launch Titles

Answer: Ridge Racer

The only other Namco Bandai game for the PS3 (at least until 2009) was "Ridge Racer 7", a by-the-books, realistic racing game previously visited in six other installments seen on the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 (and, for a time, Nintendo consoles and handhelds). The game was actually modestly-received despite being a launch title-- with plenty of game options for players and many cars and tracks, it ran like an ideal seventh-generation lead-off, acting as a precursor to the long-deferred "Gran Turismo 5", "Burnout: Paradise", "GRiD", and "Blur". It went Platinum shortly after.

4. What 2007 game starred a character named Nariko who was modeled off "Fringe" actress Anna Torv?

From Quiz PlayStation 3 Exclusives

Answer: Heavenly Sword

"Heavenly Sword", a hack-and-slash title heavy on quick-time events and large-scale battle sequences, ended up making a splash upon its 2008 release, setting a standard for the seventh generation's buxom female protagonists with large weapons in tow ("Bayonetta" also comes to mind). UK developers at Ninja Theory (also known for the rebooted "DmC: Devil May Cry") used Anna Torv, also known for playing Olivia Dunham on "Fringe", as the model for Nariko, the highly-trained warrior exile off to slice into enemies. The development of the game featured a great deal of motion capture technology.

5. In "Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One", Nanotech is available for replenishing health, but if your health is completely depleted in multiplayer, you can be revived by a teammate. Which gadget can be used to revive a fallen player?

From Quiz A Little Pick-Me-Up

Answer: Vac-U 4000

The Vac-U 4000 is a versatile gadget. You can use it to suck in crates and enemies, and it can also be used to shoot a teammate across large holes or chasms that you can't jump over. If a teammate loses all his health, you will have ten seconds to revive them using the Vac-U 4000. If you are playing offline, the player will automatically respawn even if you don't save them. While playing online, however, not reviving them in time will send everyone back to the last checkpoint.

6. Cole, the main character in "inFAMOUS", will regenerate health gradually if you can find cover. There is, however, another way to regenerate his health faster. What can he use as a pick-me-up?

From Quiz A Little Pick-Me-Up

Answer: Electricity

After an explosion that destroys a portion of Empire City, Cole discovers that he now has electrical abilities, which he uses to help restore order to the city. One advantage of Cole's electrical abilities is that he is able to drain the electricity from nearby power sources, such as light poles. Refilling his electrical meter will give him health as well as the power necessary to use his abilities.

7. What subtitle was used for "Metal Gear Solid 4", released on the PS3 in 2008?

From Quiz PlayStation 3 Exclusives

Answer: Guns of the Patriots

The first "Metal Gear" game to appear on the PlayStation 3 and the only one to be exclusive to the console, "Guns of the Patriots" gave loyal fans the chance to bring Solid Snake into another stealth-heavy scenario. This time, closer to death than ever, Snake must defeat Liquid Ocelot. The game was one of Konami's best-selling games on the PS3. Critically acclaimed, it took nearly five years to make. The result was a massive slew of won awards and a number of new PS3 purchases-- they bundled the game with a limited edition console.

8. In "Dante's Inferno", you can refill Dante's health by using the health fountains found along the way. What is the color of the liquid found in the health fountains?

From Quiz A Little Pick-Me-Up

Answer: Green

Health fountains can be found throughout the game, especially before fighting the bosses. Dante breaks open the fountains and the explosion of the green liquid replenishes his health. There are also purple fountains along the way, but they are for filling up Dante's magic meter, or mana. Yellow fountains sometimes give health, but they can also give mana, Judas coins, Beatrice stones or extra souls.

9. Sackboy featured in what popular build-it-yourself-style game narrated by Stephen Fry?

From Quiz PlayStation 3 Exclusives

Answer: LittleBigPlanet & LittleBig Planet & Little Big Planet & Little BigPlanet

Created by Media Molecule and sent to stores in 2008, "LittleBigPlanet" was the PlayStation 3's first real answer to sidescrolling platform gaming, a style much more popular on Nintendo's consoles. With up to four players you could customize and play as a Sackboy (or, yes, a Sackgirl), hopping through dangerous obstacles and collecting stickers on the way to the ultimate goal. Two main "LittleBigPlanet" games were released on the PS3 in addition to a karting game, and Sackboy became one of the faces of Sony gaming as a result.

10. What "Need For Speed" series game was the first to appear on the PS3, releasing as a launch title?

From Quiz PlayStation 3 Launch Titles

Answer: Carbon

After "Underground", "Underground 2", and "Most Wanted", "Carbon" continued an era of EA's "Need For Speed" which continued its tenure of interesting tracks and fast cars. In subsequent years, the popularity of the series continued to grow with "ProStreet" and "Undercover" before it moved into a new era of style and capabilities. "Need for Speed: Carbon" also launched on the Wii and, with both consoles combined, met with stellar sales. It also received good reviews. It was one of only two EA launch titles for this console.

11. In what Sucker Punch video game do you play a potential superhero with electric powers in Empire City?

From Quiz PlayStation 3 Exclusives

Answer: inFamous

"inFamous", an open-world adventure game by "Sly Cooper" creators Sucker Punch Productions, became extremely popular upon its release, selling enough copies to justify a second game two years later. Both games put the player into the role of Cole MacGrath, a survivor of an explosion giving him electrical superpowers. In the game you have a choice between using your powers for good or for evil-- this usually involves the binary gaming option of either helping citizens or killing them mercilessly (what I like to call the "KOTOR" effect). "inFamous" and "inFamous 2" were both very popular with critics and players alike.

12. What launch title created by Sony's in-house developers was a hack-and-slash game involving a warrior, mage, and scout as playable characters?

From Quiz PlayStation 3 Launch Titles

Answer: Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom

"Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom" was one of the few fantasy-based games to launch with the console and while it did not receive rave reviews it did sate genre players long enough-- at least until the release of "Oblivion" five months later. The game allowed you to choose between heavy-hitting melee, stealthier attacks, or magic in an attempt to fight through the dark kingdom. The game falls into the "Untold Legends" series which, until this game, was exclusively played on the PSP.

13. What PS3 game set in the jungles of Ecuador involved an ancient treasure and the lost city of El Dorado?

From Quiz PlayStation 3 Exclusives

Answer: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Released in 2007, "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" started a string of successes for the Sony console, already hampered by high prices, lesser-reviewed titles, and the more popular Wii and Xbox 360. Starring Nathan Drake as a wise-cracking adventurer, it combined beautiful cinematics, pithy voice acting, and the qualities of a feature film with the interactivity of a video game creating nothing short of an immersive experience for the gamer. It was critically praised and a quick bestseller. It was followed by two sequels on the PS3: "Among Thieves" and "Drake's Deception", both of which were just as popular. They were all made by Naughty Dog, who created "Jak and Daxter".

14. What PS3 launch game set in Japan featured the famous 'giant mutant crab' gaffe?

From Quiz PlayStation 3 Launch Titles

Answer: Genji: Days of the Blade

The sequel to the PlayStation 2 title "Genji: Dawn of the Samurai", "Days of the Blade" was a hack-and-slash title released on launch day, of course, and it ended up being one of the lesser-renowned games from the time. In fact, the developers at Game Republic didn't make another "Genji" game for the PlayStation 3 during its run (their next game was "Folklore"). Praised for better graphics, showcasing the console's improved processor and capabilities, "Genji" lost points in its handling. The story was based around feudal Japan and featured many fantasy elements including, most infamously, a 'giant mutant crab'.

15. What game by Naughty Dog, considered one of the most lucrative original games of the seventh generation, involved a post-apocalyptic world plagued by infection and two survivors, Joel and Ellie, struggling to stay alive?

From Quiz PlayStation 3 Exclusives

Answer: The Last of Us

"The Last of Us", quickly considered a touchstone of the advent of gaming's eighth generation, was one of the latest major releases exclusive to the PlayStation 3 before the release of the PlayStation 4 in 2013. "The Last of Us", a game set twenty years after a deadly viral outbreak turned the people of the world into ravenous killers, became instantly acclaimed and nearly topped the best-reviewed games of the console. One reviewer called it "The 'Citizen Kane' of gaming." This game, like "Uncharted", was developed by Naughty Dog.

16. What skateboard-themed game released as a launch title on the PS3 combined skate locales from previous games in its series?

From Quiz PlayStation 3 Launch Titles

Answer: Tony Hawk's Project 8

The eighth "Tony Hawk" video game and the first on seventh-generation consoles, "Project 8" was an amalgamation of tracks from the series' other games combined on a single map and enhanced by the better graphics of Sony's new console. Oddly, while the game was available for online play on the PlayStation 2, such feature was not included for the PlayStation 3, possibly because of issues with the software. The game was created by Neversoft, later known for taking on "Guitar Hero" after the departure of Harmonix. They also made the next sequel, "Proving Ground".

17. In "Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom", Tepeu can collect life shards from chests and enemies to upgrade his strength, but what does he feed the Majin to replenish its health?

From Quiz A Little Pick-Me-Up

Answer: Blue fruit

You have to collect the blue fruit to feed the Majin, but it is found all over. Except for green upgrade fruit, it is the only thing that can refill the Majin's health. Tepeu will have to feed the fruit to the Majin by throwing it into his mouth.

18. The case of the Origami Killer was the main story in what 2010 story-driven PS3 mystery game by Quantic Dream?

From Quiz PlayStation 3 Exclusives

Answer: Heavy Rain

A heavily story-driven game for the PlayStation 3, "Heavy Rain" featured action of a different type. Much of this title involved solving a murder mystery; you followed four different characters, each playing an integral role in solving a murder case involving the Origami Killer. Quantic Dream's story alone received critical acclaim, winning Game of the Year from several outlets, and was optioned for film adaptations. Quantic Dream later brought motion capture technology and story-driven games back in 2013, developing "Beyond: Two Souls" starring Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe.
