Alan Wake Trivia Questions

1. As the game opens, writer Alan Wake and his wife, Alice, arrive in a small town in the U.S. Northwest. It features shops, a diner, and a dark forest. What is the name of the town?

From Quiz
Alan Wake

Answer: Bright Falls

The locale bears some resemblance to the 1980s television series "Twin Peaks", the movies of Alfred Hitchcock, and the novels of Stephen King, among other sources. For instance, Alan is often attacked by evil birds, as in the movie "The Birds", and just like Agent Dale in "Twin Peaks", Alan loves to drink coffee.

2. Alan and his wife, Alice, stay in a cabin on which lake near Bright Falls?

From Quiz Alan Wake

Answer: Cauldron Lake

Escaping to Bright Falls, Washington, Alan Wake and his wife, Alice, decide to spend a vacation in the remote wilderness on Diver's Isle situated in the center of Cauldron Lake. Stopping in at the diner in Bright Falls to pick up their keys, they receive them from a mysterious old woman rather than local businessman Carl Stucky as presumed. After a fight over a typewriter, Alan leaves the house shortly before a blackout. His wife disappears without a trace and he hears her fall into the lake proper. He dives in after her only to wake up in his crashed car having hit his head-- it's nighttime and it's a week later...and he's in the middle of the woods.

3. Alan is invited to an upcoming local celebration. What is it called?

From Quiz Alan Wake

Answer: Deerfest

The event takes place in September. Footage of Deerfest appears in the cutscenes at the end of the game.

4. In Episode 1, 'Nightmare', Alan needs to travel to which location to escape the woods?

From Quiz Alan Wake

Answer: Gas station

As his car tumbles over a forest cliff he spies a gas station in the distance and decides to find help there. This trip proves to be more dangerous than expected. As he heads around large ravines and over raging rivers he comes across a lumberyard and an evil being inhabiting the appearance of Carl Stucky. Using a pistol and a flashlight for protection, Alan can make it to the gas station if he's careful to protect himself from the dark figures known only as 'The Taken'. When he arrives at the gas station he's picked up by a police officer, Sheriff Breaker, who takes him back to Cauldron Lake and shows him that there was never an island there; it sunk into the lake years ago after a volcanic eruption.

5. The Wakes stay at a cabin on an island in Cauldron Lake. Alan goes for a walk, and then hears screaming. Alice is being dragged into the lake. Then Alan wakes up-- in a car, on shore. He gets out, and is attacked. Who is after him?

From Quiz Alan Wake

Answer: Shadowy figures called the Taken

The Taken are made very strong by a mysterious evil presence. This menace manifests itself as a black cloud. Alan can burn the Taken with a light source, such as a flashlight or flare gun. He can also shoot them to kill them.

6. What is the name of Alan's agent?

From Quiz Alan Wake

Answer: Barry

When the second episode of the game fires up, Alan is taken to the station for questioning and he informs the Sheriff that his wife has been missing for a week, probably kidnapped. He's given information that might lead him to Alice from the kidnapper asking him to meet at Lover's Peak. Alan's agent, Barry, arrives on the scene having not heard from Alan in a week. He travels up to the cabin near Lover's Peak and awaits Alan's return. Of course, things don't go smoothly. Alan's trail is swathed in an evil darkness which destroys a lodge and possesses the resort's owner. Alan has no choice but to head into the woods, however.

7. Alan gets a phone call from someone who says he's kidnapped Alice. The man tells Alan he must find something, or Alice will die. What is that?

From Quiz Alan Wake

Answer: The pages of a manuscript

Alan collects the glowing pages as he finds them all over the landscape. These happen to be parts of a manuscript Alan has written, although he can't remember it. In the Xbox 360 game, there is an achievement available for those who collect all the pages.

8. Alan has an agent. He wears a big red jacket and blue jeans, and tries to help Alan find a way to leave town. What is his name?

From Quiz Alan Wake

Answer: Barry

During a funny scene in the fifth of the six 'episodes' or sections of the game, Barry helps Alan fight the Taken. For extra safety, Barry wears Christmas lights all around his head and jacket. He also wears a miner's helmet with a light on top.

9. Who lures Alan to the trailer park with the promise of giving him his missing manuscript?

From Quiz Alan Wake

Answer: Rose

Alan and Barry head to Rose's trailer in the local trailer park and Rose knocks them out by sedating their coffee. When Alan wakes up he finds that Rose is nearly incoherent and she definitely doesn't have the manuscript. Of course, the police have also arrived. Alan has no choice but to flee into the woods to evade capture and this begins a wild chase through darkness and natural obstacles. Alan reaches a radio station, but the announcer's joy at seeing a famous guest in his studio alerts the cops of Wake's whereabouts...and the chase begins again.

10. After a long sequence in the woods, Alan wakes up to find he is at Cauldron Lake Lodge, a mental health center run by town resident Dr. Hartman. Two other patients, the Anderson brothers, were in a band in the 1970s. What band was it?

From Quiz Alan Wake

Answer: Old Gods of Asgard

Alan finds a record by the group. He figures they can help him, and decides to go to their farm.

11. Alan wants to find a woman named Cynthia Weaver. She has created a secret shelter which will protect people from the attackers. What is the name of the place?

From Quiz Alan Wake

Answer: The Well-Lit Room

When Alan and company arrive at the shelter, we see it is adorned with hundreds of lightbulbs. Cynthia says a few of the bulbs are broken. The rest are still working, so the place is very bright.

12. While staying at the Cauldron Lake Lodge in the care of Dr. Hartman, Alan met two brothers. One of them was named Odin; who was the other?

From Quiz Alan Wake

Answer: Tor

Dr. Hartman leads Alan around the lodge at the beginning of the fourth episode before the darkness returns once more. Finding Barry, Alan locates the manuscript in Hartman's office and plans his escape, but not before getting separated from his friend on the way to the car. Fleeing the lodge and then traveling through the gardens and hedge maze on the grounds, Alan finds his way back to Barry and the two decide to head to the Andersons' residence at Valhalla farms where the two practiced their rock music under the names Tor and Odin. En route, however, their car tumbles off the road in a rockslide and they're separated.

13. Alan must search for a special item which can help him fight the Dark Presence. We learn that Alan was given this object by his mother. What is it?

From Quiz Alan Wake

Answer: The Clicker

As a child, Alan was afraid of the dark. His mother gave him the Clicker so he would feel safe. The item consists of a rectangular plastic fob, with a button in the middle.

14. A major battle against the Taken in Episode 4: 'The Truth', occurs when Alan reaches which local landmark?

From Quiz Alan Wake

Answer: A stage

Alan continues through the woods until he finally reaches a vehicle and drives himself to the farmstead of Valhalla. Here, things may seem calm but they escalate when he and Barry take on an onslaught of the Taken with pyrotechnics and stagelights to back them. After this battle, Alan will need to navigate Tor and Odin's barn and silo before facing off against possessed farm equipment and reaching the Andersons' abode. After discovering that they need to "find the lady with the light", Alan and Barry get drunk on homemade moonshine found in the residence and Alan realizes the truth of what happened to Alice. She was taken by the creepy woman from the diner and he was possessed into writing the manuscript to facilitate the spreading of the darkness. Luckily he was able to write himself to safety...but the manuscript was never finished. When Alan awakens, he's held at gunpoint by Agent Nightingale who takes him and Barry to jail in Bright Falls.

15. In Episode 5: 'The Clicker', Alan finds an ally in which Bright Falls resident?

From Quiz Alan Wake

Answer: Sheriff Beaker

In the fifth episode of the game, Sheriff Beaker realizes that Alan is telling the truth when Agent Nightingale is pulled away by the darkness. Freeing Alan and Barry from their jail cell, they decide to make their way through Bright Falls to use a helicopter which can take them to Cynthia Weaver, the "lady with the light", who resides in the power plant just outside the town. Alan is knocked out of the helicopter en route and is forced to make his way to the plant on foot. When he arrives he locates Cynthia in a safe haven and the two of them continue onward together until he hears the helicopter crash. Meeting up with Barry and Sheriff Beaker, they proceed to the dam and a well-lit room containing what Alan needs to defeat the darkness (with Alan facing off against the darkness' true strength). When they open the brightly-illuminated vault, Alan finds a page of a manuscript mentioning his childhood and an item called 'the clicker' which he received from his mother at age seven. He decides to head back to Cauldron Lake to finish everything.

16. How does Alan access the underwater cabin?

From Quiz Alan Wake

Answer: By jumping into the lake

Alan departs from the well-lit room alone and heads to Cauldron Lake. This journey is not without its difficulties as Barbara throws all she can at him to stop him from arriving. At the edge of a large precipice overlooking Cauldron Lake, Alan takes on a tornado of darkness and destroys it with his light before taking a plunge into the waters far below and clicking the clicker. He awakens in a world of darkness beginning in his apartment and then ending up at Bird Leg Cabin on Diver's Isle. Here he finds Barbara inside and as she taunts him, he embraces her, places the clicker between them, and presses it, destroying her in a burst of light. Alice emerges from the waters, freed from the lake. The town of Bright Falls celebrates Deerfest on schedule while Rose from the diner clutches a lantern much like Cynthia Weaver. A possessed spirit of Agent Nightingale watches on. Alan Wake remains in the typewriter room of the lodge writing "Departure" while the darkness licks at the windows outside. "It's not a lake... it's an ocean," he muses.
