Company of Heroes Trivia Questions

1. On Omaha Beach (mission #1, part 1), how many men must reach the shingle alive?

From Quiz
Company of Heroes (PC)

Answer: 25

This mission is, in many ways, very true to life. Allied bombing in the Omaha Beach area failed to significantly disable German defenses, which meant that arriving allied soldiers had to weave up the beach against accurately placed machine-gun emplacements and pre-calibrated mortars. It was a slaughter, and no mistake.

2. How many seconds does it take an Allied grenade to explode after it hits the ground?

From Quiz Company of Heroes (PC)

Answer: Less than 1.2

Grenades explode rather quickly, although often this is still a bit too long, which is why they are best thrown against enemy units who cannot quickly run away from the blast, like Machine Gunners or Pinned infantry. Satchel charges (thrown by Airborne troops but also Engineers in the first mission) take much longer to explode, but cause much more devastation. They are used primarily against buildings. "Sticky bombs", used by Allied Riflemen, also take a long time to explode, but remain attached to the vehicle at which they were thrown, so it's not much of an issue.

3. Which two kinds of Allied infantry can "Fire up" to move quicker and lessen the effect of suppression?

From Quiz Company of Heroes (PC)

Answer: Airborne and Rangers

A useful tactic is to "Fire Up" before throwing a satchel charge into a building (with Airborne) or a grenade at an enemy machine gun, then run away before the grenade explodes. This minimizes damage taken while storming the objective, and is very useful in mission #3 (Carentan) where many buildings must be demolished this way.

4. Aside from combat, what additional role can Panzer Grenadiers perform?

From Quiz "Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts"

Answer: Repairing damaged vehicles

Panzer Grenadiers are mechanized infantry, trained to work in close coordination with the many Panzer Elite vehicles. Therefore, they are all trained in mechanics, and can repair vehicles and structures - albeit at a slow rate. For most Panzer Elite armies, the Panzer Grenadiers are the only available type of infantry - they have no separate engineers or even foot-mobile weapon teams! This faction relies heavily on vehicles - and they have an amazing variety of vehicles to choose from.

5. How much does an air bombardment cost?

From Quiz Company of Heroes (PC)

Answer: 250 Munitions

Airstrikes are a very valuable weapon for the Airborne Commander. They have their advantages and disadvantages over Calliope and Off-map artillery which is available to other company commanders, but for the most part they are rather devastating if you can afford the cost, especially in campaign maps where they are available (Mission #7, the V2 rocket site, comes to mind). Preceded with a Recon flight if necessary (costing 50 Munitions), a P-47 can attack anywhere on the map, and the rockets can cause massive damage, especially to buildings. The location of the hits is much more controlled than artillery too, although planes can get shot down by a well-prepared enemy. However, even a bunch of flak-88s, in today's patch 1.4, aren't good enough to consistently stop these strikes.

6. What is the only upgrade available for the Allied Halftrack?

From Quiz Company of Heroes (PC)

Answer: Quad .50cal cannons

An easy question to anyone who's played a mission with Halftracks. This quad-anti-aircraft-cannon is extremely useful against enemy vehicles, although these would also fire back at the halftrack, causing damage. Alternatively, it can be used rather effectively to pin down enemy infantry, although it is often necessary to have a second unit (preferably your own infantry) to finish them off while they cower. The AA is loud, but not accurate enough to wipe out an enemy squad as quickly as heavy machine-guns do. Trucks can reinforce nearby infantry without requiring any upgrades. This is still possible with a Quad installed, but the truck loses its ability to transport troops.

7. When a star appears above a British infantry unit, what does it signify?

From Quiz "Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts"

Answer: The unit is receiving bonuses from a nearby Lieutenant.

Unlike in the other factions, most British units do not accumulate experience at all. Only three British units - the Lieutenant, Captain, and Command Tank - do go up in experience level. However, when one of these "command units" is in the vicinity of certain British units, those units receive powerful bonuses. For example, when a Lieutenant is close a British Infantry Section or team of Sappers, those infantrymen receive strong bonuses that make them fight much harder and better than before. This is indicated by a golden star appearing above the affected unit. As a Lieutenant goes up in experience levels, the bonuses he gives to nearby infantry units get better and better!

8. During the incursion into St. Fromond, what event/action does NOT trigger the enemy counterattack?

From Quiz Company of Heroes (PC)

Answer: Letting too much time pass before crossing the bridge into town

Yes, it's true, you can have your troops waiting on your side of the bridge for as long as you may want. This opens up a slight cheat/trick, where you can not only gather a huge amount of resources, but can also send units across the bridge and back, one by one, to gain experience by killing off German patrols on the other side. With all units "leveled up", the rest of the mission becomes much less daunting.

9. Aside from repairing friendly vehicles, what can a Bergetiger Tank do?

From Quiz "Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts"

Answer: Restore destroyed vehicles to operational status.

The Bergetiger is based on an improvised version of the Tiger tank found by allied troops after the invasion of Normandy. It is unarmed, with its main cannon replaced by a winch that allows it to lift wreckage. In the game, the Bergetiger and its crew can actually restore destroyed vehicles to working condition. This has virtually no costs, so proper use of the Bergetiger can allow you to re-use your vehicles over and over without paying to replace them with new units. The restoration process is quite slow, but the Bergetiger is well-armored enough that it can sometimes even do this in the middle of heavy combat!

10. Medal question: A unit of which type must be "leveled up" to elite status to win a medal in one of the missions?

From Quiz Company of Heroes (PC)

Answer: Rangers

Rangers are the Allies' ultimate anti-vehicle infantry, and with their SMG upgrade can decimate an enemy infantry squad, if attacked from a short range. A team of at least three Rangers can be equipped with three Bazooka/Panzershrek anti-tank rockets, which are easily enough to destroy enemy light- and medium-size vehicles, including even the Panzer IV, if the Rangers manage to flank it properly. Against stronger German tanks, the Panther and Tiger, an extremely courageous Sherman (or two, or more) would need to draw fire first, allowing the Rangers to flank the beast and fire repeatedly at its rear. Certainly not for the light-hearted.

11. What American tank is the British "Firefly" based on?

From Quiz "Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts"

Answer: Sherman

The British Sherman Firefly is a modified version of the Sherman tank. Its main cannon is replaced by an immensely-powerful 17-pounder anti-tank cannon - the same cannon found in stationary British anti-tank emplacements. This cannon is extremely dangerous to enemy tanks, and can even pierce the front armor of heavy tanks with little effort - causing massive damage. It is sadly much less useful against infantry and small vehicles, making the Sherman Firefly somewhat vulnerable to anti-tank infantry.

12. From the German Point of View: German troops don't attain veterancy in the same way that Allied troops do. How do German troops attain Veterancy?

From Quiz Company of Heroes (PC)

Answer: Veterancy is purchased as upgrades at the Axis headquarters, like the BAR is purchased for allied riflemen

Many players complain about German Veterancy, as it costs a lot of resources to get units to proper fighting capability, while their Allied counterparts get veterancy simply for killing German units! Other players commend this, because after having paid, German structures produce higher-end units straight away, so even German elites become expendable in a way. However, at its present cost, and the fact that veterancy must be purchased for Infantry, Support, Vehicles and Tanks separately, most Axis players often opt to spend their hard-earned resources on churning out more troops instead.

13. Which aircraft is used when the Panzer Elite Luftwaffe Tactics Company activates its "Panzerknacker Support" air raid ability?

From Quiz "Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts"

Answer: Henschel Hs-129

The "Henschel Panzerknacker Support" ability is a terrific way of getting rid of a large number of enemy tanks in rapid fashion. Once targeted at a specific area of the battlefield, Henschel Hs-129 will periodically descend on any enemy vehicle detected inside the target area, and attack anything that moves with their powerful anti-tank cannons. The idea of anti-tank cannons mounted on an airplane was revolutionary at the time, but carries on to this day. A-10 "Warthog" planes used by the U.S. Air Force carry a multi-barrel "Avenger" cannon that can rip armored vehicles to pieces!

14. What can a 105mm Priest Artillery do that a 25-pounder Howitzer cannot?

From Quiz "Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts"

Answer: Move.

The 105mm Priest is a mobile artillery vehicle fielded by the British Royal Artillery Support company. Although it lacks the range and firing rate of the 25-pounder Howitzer emplacement, its advantage is that it can freely move about. It can follow other British units around to provide support fire, make sudden raids forward of the line to fire at distant targets, and does not need to be replaced or be scuttled every time the front lines shift. Only three Priests can exist on the battlefield at any given time though.

15. One of the last missions in the Panzer Elite campaigns involves advancing towards a massive bridge and securing it against an enemy advance. Where does this mission take place?

From Quiz "Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts"

Answer: Arnhem

During Operation Market Garden, the allies attempted to secure a large bridge in the Dutch town of Arnhem, a bridge over the river Rhine leading directly into northern Germany. They landed paratroopers there, who fought valiantly to hold it until reinforcements could breach through Belgium and Holland to link up with them. The Germans, however, fought back just as valiantly, and eventually managed to stop the allies from crossing over the bridge. During this mission, you will have to contend with many British commandos operating captured German equipment, including the terrifying Flak 88 Anti-Aircraft/Anti-Tank cannons.

16. On a 1024x768 display, how many munitions does one screen's length of barbed wire cost?

From Quiz Company of Heroes (PC)

Answer: 0 & zero & none

A trick question - Barbed wire is free! Barbed wire is great for stopping infantry. No infantry except Engineers can pass through, and even Engineers first need to cut the fence, using wire cutters which (in skirmish mode) require an upgrade to first be purchased at the base. However, vehicles can zoom through it like it wasn't there, so it is customary to build a line of tank-traps right in front of the barbed wire. Since vehicles can't pass the tank traps, it prevents them from destroying the barbed wire fence. Hence, the enemy must use Engineers to cut the barbed wire if he wants to get infantry through. Note however, that heavy tanks, and also a Crocodile fitted with a bulldozer upgrade, can ram through tank traps unimpeded...

17. Where does the British army position its headquarters upon entering the city of Caen during their campaign?

From Quiz "Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts"

Answer: In the chateau.

By the time the army reaches Caen, the allied air forces have reduced most of the city to rubble. Fighting in the ruined city is very difficult, and requires the British to construct their defenses intelligently to prevent the enemy from throwing them right back out again. The Germans are also dug in quite deeply, and at one point during the first mission inside Caen, a massive air raid must be called in to clear out their forward defensive lines. Advancing past it without this air raid is nigh impossible!
