Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem Trivia Questions

1. What smell does Maximillian Roivas use to describe the bone thief?

From Quiz
"Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem": Part Four

Answer: Vanilla and rot

Within the pages of the Tome of Darkness, the option is available to view Maximillian Roivas' journal. In it is the description of the monsters you face in the game, including the Guardians, Horrors, Bone Thieves, and Zombies. Several differences can exist between the different alignments of the creatures: for example, the Xel'lotath bone thief has no head. Maximillian described the Ulyaoth bone thief smelling like "somewhere between the spice of vanilla and bitter sweetness of pustulent rot."

2. Which character gets saved by Mantorok?

From Quiz "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem" Part Three

Answer: Edwin

Pious sent two winged beasts at the doctor, telling them to destroy him. But before they could reach him, a powerful blast-a purple blast-hit them, including Pious himself. After receiving the attack, Pious disappeared, crying out, "The darkness shall prevail!" Edwin met with Ellia, and she gave him Mantorok's heart. Despite Mantorok's appearance with its many eyes and fang-filled mouths, it fought against the Darkness... for its own needs, of course.

3. At what time must Edward and Alex change the clock hands around in order to open the secret room?

From Quiz "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem" Part Two

Answer: 3:33

Right at the beginning of the story, you have to change the grandfather clock to read Three-thirty-three. When you do, the secret room opens and you get the Tome of Eternal Darkness for the first time. When you play as Edward, you first have to find the clock hands, which are missing from the face of the clock. He sees the ghost of his ancestor Maximilian point to the clock beforehand.

4. Under Xel'lotath (green), when do we first get the Chattur'gha (red) rune?

From Quiz Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Answer: As Maximilian Roivas in a yellowed dimension

In this dimension, everything is yellow and looks old-fashioned. After retrieving the rune, Max returns to the regular world, as if he'd never left it. This rune is my favorite because it means you can now cast a spell to restore health.

5. What region of Cambodia do you play in as Ellia?

From Quiz Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Answer: Angkor Thom

You also play here as Edwin Lindsey. It is where the Master of Chaos, keeper of the Ancients, Mantorok, dwells and festers and slowly decays for millenia to come.

6. What happens when you use the spell Magick Pool while picking the Mantorok alignment?

From Quiz "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem": Part Four

Answer: All stats regenerate at the same time

The Magick Pool spell constantly regenerates energy for you, whether it's health, sanity, or magick. The Magick Pool spell requires the runes Tier and Redgormor. When you choose the alignment Mantorok-which is purple-the purple sign for Mantorok appears and all three will constantly regenerate until the spell is finished! Also, if you choose Mantorok when using a Recovery spell, both health and sanity are restored.

7. Many times servants and other humans will attack you. Why is this?

From Quiz "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem" Part Three

Answer: They are possessed

Several times the game will show cutscenes with the vicious bone thieves overtaking humans. When this happens, the person walks straight and directly at you. Often times their skin grows pale. After striking them, the humans blow apart and the bone thief finally reveals itself-at a high cost to your fragile sanity.

8. Which character is originally given Mantorok's heart?

From Quiz "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem" Part Two

Answer: Ellia

Ellia starts out wishing her life was more exciting- and then the Darkness comes. She is the first character to encounter the massive many-eyed Mantorok. When she approaches the statue in front of the purple beast, she is given the heart of Mantorok to hide from Pious. Ellia hides the heart inside of her own. Later on, she gives it to Dr. Edwin Lindsey. He then gives the heart to Edward Roivas.

9. What does not happen when you beat the game under all three alignments?

From Quiz Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Answer: You unlock special outfits

It takes a while, but it's worth it to beat the game three times. The extra ending is interesting and different; it explains a little bit about Mantorok. You have the ability, if you choose, to not expend any magic, sanity, or health anytime in the game under Eternal Mode. You can also choose any part of the game to pick up and play. Unfortunately, you don't get any unlockable uniforms.

10. What is the chronological order of the characters, (by dates, not in the order of appearance)

From Quiz Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Answer: Pious, Karim, Anthony, Ellia, Roberto, Paul, Max, Peter, Edward, Edwin, Michael, Alex

The adventure takes place from 26 B.C. - 2000 A.D.

11. Playing as Michael Edwards, how much time are you given once you've set off the bomb?

From Quiz "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem": Part Four

Answer: Three minutes

Michael Edwards is the second-to-last character you play in the game. He was a firefighter working in the Middle East in the year 1991. While he was underground, he received a message telling him to "Destroy this" with the image of the center of the underground. After finding a detonator and a C4 bomb, Michael enchanted it and set it to go off in three minutes. That means you must run through a portion of the level as the structure collapses around you! You have three minutes to escape with your life.

12. When do we meet the first Trapper?

From Quiz "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem" Part Three

Answer: With Anthony

Anthony's story took place in 814 AD. He was given a special letter to deliver to Charlemagne, "for his eyes only." However, curiosity got the better of him and he received the curse meant for Charlemagne. His chapter was the first for many monsters: the Trappers, who glow different colors when they sense you near them, Horrors, who are incredibly large and powerful, and the first bone thief, who can overtake humans. When a Trapper zaps you, it takes you to its Trapper dimension, where you can recover magickal energy, health, or sanity. After a Trapper zaps once, it falls over and perishes.

13. Which character gets cursed and slowly decays?

From Quiz "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem" Part Two

Answer: Anthony

Anthony received a scroll from a monk for Charlemagne. The monk explicitly tells him that is for his eyes only. However, Anthony steals a quick look at the scroll. A yellow burst of light shocks him and he realizes the scroll was cursed. He knew that Charlemagne was in danger. His chapter is spent trying to reach the legendary man, but Anthony's flesh slowly begins to decay as time wears on. Near the end, he merely limps along.

14. Why is it that Pious' summoning spell took two millenia, and Alex's took about two seconds?

From Quiz Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Answer: Alex had three Ancients' Essences

If you try to enter the City of En'gha without all of the Ancients' Essences, it will tell you that you need all three.

15. Which character was committed to an insane asylum?

From Quiz "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem" Part Three

Answer: Maximillian

In the year 1760 AD, you play as Maximillian Roivas, an ancestor of Alex's. He keeps a journal detailing the monsters he encounters. He is one of the people you play as who must battle servants who have been possessed by evil bone thieves. Maximillian was convinced the world was in danger, but nobody believed him, and they in fact locked him away until he died. Later in the game the ghost of Maximillian appears to both Edward and Alex.

16. What melee weapon do you receive playing as Edward Roivas?

From Quiz "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem" Part Two

Answer: A Sabre

You can find the Sabre in the room with the piano, hanging on the wall. Like any melee weapon, it can be enchanted to glow a certain color and perform more effectively. Playing as Edward, you also receive a double-barrel shotgun and a very potent elephant gun. When he uses that gun, he falls to the ground because it's such a powerful weapon.

17. "Give us the blessing of ignorance, the happiness of ..." What?

From Quiz Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Answer: oblivion

This is said in one of Max's autopsies, the Xel'lotath Guardian autopsy, I believe.

18. What runes are needed to complete the first nine-point spell?

From Quiz "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem": Part Four

Answer: Pargon, Nethlek, and Redgormor

There are only two nine-point spells in the entire game. The largest spells a player can personally cast are only seven-point spells, so this one is special. The first time is when you're playing as Edward, and you use the runes Pargon, Nethlek, and Redgormor. Pargon is the "power" rune, Nethlek is the "dispel" rune, and Redgormor is the "area" rune. He uses this to destroy a city filled with Guardians.

19. Where was Mantorok's heart hidden for centuries?

From Quiz "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem" Part Three

Answer: Within Ellia's body

For centuries Pious searched for the powerful Mantorok's heart. Finally, when Dr. Edwin Lindsey entered its prison, he encountered Ellia, a fellow player in the game. She told him it hadn't been easy hiding the heart for so long. Ellia told Edwin to "seal the heart" and not to touch it. She also told him to take it to the "Gathering of Light." The heart was placed in a bookshelf in the Roivas estate, waiting for Alex to find it. The heart was hidden behind a book by Edwin Lindsey, called "The Demon and the Kmher". Ironically the beast featured on the cover is reminiscent of Mantorok.

20. Who wrote the quote from in the beginning of the game?

From Quiz Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Answer: Edgar Allen Poe

Edgar Allen Poe: "Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing, doubting..." This is a quote from one of his more famous works, "The Raven". It's a good beginning to a spooky game.

21. How many skulls are in the pile of ashes you find in the servants' quarters as Alex?

From Quiz Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Answer: 3

If you examine the pile, it will say that the room was clearly occupied by four, yet only three skulls were there.

22. What runes must Alex use to defeat the chosen evil alignment's creature?

From Quiz "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem": Part Four

Answer: Tier, Pargon, and Aretak

Alex creates the final nine-point spell using Tier for "summon," Pargon for "power," and Aretak for "creature." Thus, she is summoning the appropriate creature to fight the large monster Pious Augustus has also summoned. For example, if he summoned Ulyath, Alex would need to summon Xel'lotath.

23. Which character do you play when you first get to use a crossbow?

From Quiz "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem" Part Three

Answer: Luther

Paul Luther is the character who had a crossbow available to use. He also has a mace, a torch, and a meditation rod used to recover sanity. You can also acquire a two-handed sword from a fight with Anthony. His putrefied body fills with yellow waves and he cries, "Charlemagne..." and stands up to battle you. After he's defeated, Paul Luther kneels and prays for his soul. Anthony also carried the final gem-the ruby-needed to open another section of the church, along with the sapphire and emerald. You also get a crossbow as Roberto Bianchi.

24. Which two runes must you use to destroy all of the guardians in the City of Light?

From Quiz "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem" Part Two

Answer: Redgormor and Nethlek

Edward has to create a massive 9-point spell to kill all of the monsters roaming around in the City of Light. Redgormor means "area" and Nethlek means "dispel." Edward is the first to use the 9-point spell, and then his granddaughter Alex uses it. She uses the runes Tier (summon) and Aretak (creature) to capture the beast that will fight against whatever alignment you chose when you played as Augustus. For example, if you are under the Chattur'gha alignment, you must summon Ulyaoth to battle the red monster.

25. What floats down the hall on the second floor of the Roivas mansion if you go insane as Alex?

From Quiz Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Answer: Dual flintlocks

Insanity effects are fun; my favorite is when the head falls off and you are allowed to pick it back up, which cues some "Hamlet"-like thing.

26. What is the final rune needed to defeat the game?

From Quiz "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem": Part Four

Answer: Bankorok

After Alex summons the creature to do battle and ultimately defeat the evil alignment, she is visited by her grandpa Edward. She is distressed because once her summoned creature wins, it begins to imagine taking over the world for itself. Horrible images flash. Alex cries, "What have I done?" because she unleashed the monster. Edward comforts her and they create a new spell, using the rune Bankorok, which is the "protect" rune. With that, the creature is similarly banished.

27. Which character is a psychologist?

From Quiz "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem" Part Three

Answer: Edward

In the game you eventually get to play as Alex's grandfather, Edward Roivas. During his chapter, he explains that he became a psychologist in order to use science to explain his family's past. Mostly he thought about his ancestor Maximillian Roivas, who was committed to an asylum. And perhaps due to his level-headedness, Edward has a very high amount of sanity.

28. Who are you playing as when you get the 5-point Circle of Power?

From Quiz "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem" Part Two

Answer: Paul

Luther finds a sheet of music during his quest to find clues about the church's secrets. When he sits down to play, if you press the correct keys, a cutscene occurs and a bureau opens to reveal the 5-point circle of power. Once you find the Pargon rune, each spell will be much more powerful.

29. Who are you playing as when you receive the Magickal Elixir?

From Quiz Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Answer: Peter

This Magickal Elixir restores all of your Magickal Energy. This really comes in handy later when he fights the immense monster. This is the biggest foe you've fought so far. In fact, in the chapter "Heresy!" when you play as Paul Luther, this same monster destroys you. I guess as Peter you're more prepared.

30. What are the Runes you need to scribe as Edward to destroy the City of En'gha? (Not counting Pargon & Alignment runes)

From Quiz Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Answer: Redgormor and Nethlek

Dispel area, "pargonned" (as I call it) six times = ultra destruction of the Guardian city of En'gha. Unfortunately, this is no loss as there are many other Guardian cities.
