There are five area on the game map: Brooklyn, Hell's Kitchen, Little Italy, Midtown, and New Jersey. Little Italy, Midtown, and Hell's Kitchen are all on Manhattan Island, with Little Italy to the south, Midtown north of that, and Hell's Kitchen to the east. New Jersey is to the East, accessible from both Hell's Kitchen and Little Italy. Brooklyn is to the west, and only accessible from Little Italy.

The player gains rank and respect in the crime world by completing certain missions. These involve assignments such as attacks on the Don's enemies and extorting protection money from merchants.

In the movie "The Godfather", Tom Hagen is sent to Hollywood to reason with movie producer Jack Woltz who refuses to cast Johnny Fontane, who is Don Vito's godson, in a new movie. After a few attempts to reason with Woltz verbally, Tom gives up and your character, along with Rocco, move in under the cover of night to leave a message for Woltz that will finally persuade him.

Every time one commits a crime, the "heat" meter rises. The higher this level, the more likely you are to have the police come after you.

There are five categories in the Skills and Upgrades menu: Fighting, Shooting, Health, Speed, and Street Smarts. Fighting increases your attack power when using fists, hold time (the length of time you can hold an enemy before they'll break away), and interrogation pressure, which is used when extorting businesses and rackets. Shooting increases your aiming speed, aiming precision, and disarm chance (the chance that they'll drop their weapon upon being shot). Health increases your hit points, health regeneration rate (when you use medicine), and blocking power (when fighting with fists). Speed increases your sprint duration, fighting speed (when fighting with fists), and weapon reload/reveal/conceal speed. Street Smarts increases the number of explosive items (molotov cocktails, dynamite, time bombs) you can carry at one time, the amount of time a person's breaking point is revealed (if you pressure someone too much, you'll exceed their breaking point, and they'll merely fight to the death instead of submitting to the Corleones), and decrease the amount of vendetta/heat you gain from killing rival family members or performing unlawful acts.

If you follow the story missions, you'll go to each of the four areas except New Jersey. The closest you come to it is when Sonny gets gunned down at the toll booth. There are a few hits located in New Jersey, but that is all. The only thing to do is to extort its businesses and destroy the Stracci compound.

You gain respect from pretty much anything, whether it be killing rival family members, extorting businesses/rackets, pulling off missions/hits, etc. Once your respect meter is filled, you gain a level.

Each family has its own color on the in-game maps. The Corleones' color is black.

Answer: One of your businesses is bombed

When you gain enough vendetta (1000) with a certain family, you'll start a Mob War. You have 48 game hours to stop a Mob War. Each minute takes one second in the game, so you have 48 minutes to stop it. You can stop it by bombing one of their businesses, or bribing an FBI agent. The pros to bombing an enemy business are that you get more money/experience when fighting your way in, and it doesn't cost you too much ($2000 for the time bomb). The downside is that once you bomb a business, you have to wait a while for it to be repaired before you can extort it. The opposite is true for bribing the FBI, where you can bribe and FBI agent ($3000) to stop a Mob War with little risk to yourself. If you don't stop a Mob War in time, or get arrested/killed during a Mob War, one of your businesses will be bombed, and you will lose money.

Answer: Frankie Malone

This is a little side plot that's not part of the movies. You first meet Frankie when the attempt on Don Vito's happens. You then begin a small relationship (seen only in cut scenes) with her. During one story mission, your safe house is attacked and Frankie is taken hostage. You chase down her captors with Monk and eventually get her back in a church. You find that she has been shot, and she dies in your character's arms.

Each lv. 3 version of every weapon has a new name. The Python is the Magnum. It is able to hold eight rounds instead of six, with the ability to carry an additional 80 instead of just 36. The Revolver lv. 3 variant is called the Saturday Night Special, and the Pistol is The Assassin's Pistol. There are three different melee weapons: baseball bat (weakest), lead pipe, and police baton (strongest), and no true upgrade between them. You cannot purchase a melee weapon, but rather, you find find them after an enemy has dropped his.

Answer: Bomb the enemy compound

Each family has one compound, each located in one of the five areas of the game map. Each compound has two buildings, and they layout of the buildings from compound to compound does not change. In the basement of each building is a bomb placement point (and a time bomb in case you don't have one). Plant the bomb and exit the building. There are normally new enemies waiting outside the compound the building for you, and you may die when trying to escape, but as long as the bomb goes off before you die, it will be saved, and you can bomb the second building on the next run.
