Jennifer is the main protagonist, during the game she is referred to as the "unlucky girl" or as "the poor unfortunate girl". The goal of the game is that Jennifer must remember a promise that she's made but to whom and what promise entails is revealed throughout the game in the storybooks you receive.

Every storybook in the game represents the people in the Orphanage including Gregory, Clara, Mr. Hoffman, and the girls in the Red Crayon Aristocrats but the main theme of each storybook is centered around one or two characters, such as The Bird Of Happiness representing Eleanor. The goal in The Rag Princess Sews chapter is to find Joshua the Bear, which Amanda has stolen. While trying to find Amanda, you find a glass case that has her diary in it. The diary gives frightening insight into Amanda's mind, as she writes about how much she dislikes Jennifer. When you find Amanda she's beating a doll that is almost identical to Jennifer, and she gives Jennifer Joshua the bear in hopes of being able convince the Aristocrats that Jennifer stole Joshua the Bear.

You can see Meg's full name written on the front of the notebook she carries everywhere. This is the only place it can be found.

"Once upon a time, there was a precious little girl." (page one) "Her friend, the Princess of the Red Rose, was always by her side." (page two) It's the first story book you get while playing the game. When you're on the bus a small boy named Joshua begs you to read him the story. He runs off the bus before your character can read it to him and she exits the bus with the storybook in hand and chases after him.

The girls wrote a series of letters to one another, where it seems Wendy had mistaken Jennifer for a boy. Upon reading further into the letters the girls seem to be pretending, assuming roles of prince and princess, but Wendy (the princess) tells Jennifer (the prince) that she will set her free then they can live together forever. At the bottom of the letter its signed, everlasting true love, I am yours. The letter is dated 27th of January from W to J.

The Red Crayon Aristocrats is the name of the club that the girls in the orphanage formed. Though several of the initiations/offerings that they perform can be strange or extreme. When you're on the airship, you see several posters for The Red Crayon Aristocrats. The Hierarchy of the club goes as followed. Led by Wendy "The Lonely Princess" a.k.a. "Princess of the Rose" Diana, "The Strong-Willed Princess" is the Duchess Eleanor, "The Cold Princess" is the Baroness Meg, "The Wise-Looking Princess"is the Countess Amanda, "The Small-Hearted Princess" is the Poor Class Jennifer, "The Unlucky Girl" is the Beggar

Clara is the oldest, at 16 years of age. After the adults left the orphanage, she stayed behind for a bit to take care of the younger kids before she herself left.

It's on the ground in the barn you go into after you get off the bus, before you go to the orphanage. You don't find Brown until the unlucky clover field chapter, but he's tied up in sector nine turbine area. Also Brown's collar has the boarding pass attached to it, which allows you to gain entrance to the orphanage.

She is seen with or around Mr. Hoffman most of the time. Clara is introduced to you in the second floor sick bay in the game as the "Frightened Princess" why she's called that is up for debate. Clara is also the oldest of the orphans. Most of the children in the orphanage have a title or nickname assigned to them including the maid, Martha. Wendy was the princess for most of the time. She eventually lost her rank to Jennifer who beat her up and revealed the truth about their "games".

Her status in the hierarchy of the club in the beginning is a beggar.

The bucket knight is your save point, and he will also help you throughout the game. If you get stuck, you can ask the bucket knight and he'll give you hints. He also tells you that he's aged and cannot remember the past, and that you two can remember your promises together.
