Torin's Passage Trivia Questions

1. Who lives in Asthenia?

From Quiz
"Torin's Passage" Part 3

Answer: Nobody

Asthenia is a land based on Dante's Inferno, with nothing but rocks and lava. There is a dwelling which suggest that there may once have been people there, but when Torin visits there is no one there but him and Boogle.

2. What was Lycentia convicted of?

From Quiz "Torin's Passage" Part 2

Answer: Kidnapping the royal baby

In the prologue for chapter 3, we learn that the young woman whom we saw in the introduction is Lycentia, the sorceress we are seeking. She is in court mainly because she was accused of murdering the royal family. The judge couldn't find evidence to convict her of that, but he does have evidence of her kidnapping the royal baby. So for that, she got banished to the Lands Below. To make matters worse, they put a giant collar around her neck and hastened it real tight and told her that if she tried to return to the Lands Above, the collar would choke her to death. What makes this awfully cruel punishment even more horrible, is that it's entirely unjust. Lycentia wasn't kidnapping the baby. She was rescuing it. She got literally the opposite of what she deserved. This is one of the saddest things ever in my opinion. Sadder still, Torin doesn't see any of this. We, the players see it but he doesn't.

3. In the prologue, we see a young woman. What is she doing?

From Quiz Torin's Passage

Answer: Taking a crying baby out of his crib

The prologue shows a large bedroom. We see a man and a woman asleep in a king-sized bed. We also see a crib and we hear crying. We then see a young woman go into the bedroom and take the crying baby out of the crib. The mom wakes up and sees this too, and doesn't look happy. We also see a sinister-looking man in a cloak walk into a room and from his ring he drop some sort of green fluid in a container that was near the bed. He casts some sort of spell, and the liquid takes the appearance of flying snakes. It's clearly bad, and when the young woman, who is holding the baby, sees it go into the crib, the woman gasps and runs.

4. Torin weighs how many cannon balls?

From Quiz "Torin's Passage" Part 3

Answer: Four

There is a cannon that is hidden underground, and in order to make it appear, you need to balance a see-saw with Torin and cannon balls. Torin = fiour balls or Torin + one ball = five balls.

5. What is the name of the first "Land Below" that Torin visits?

From Quiz "Torin's Passage" Part 2

Answer: Escarpa

When Torin finally gets access to the phenocryst in The Lands Above, it takes him to Escarpa. In Escarpa, he meets a lot of short wierd characters.

6. What happens to the man and woman who raised Torin?

From Quiz Torin's Passage

Answer: They are kidnapped

Originally I was going to ask "What happens to Torin's parents," but then if you had answered "They were murdered," you would've been right and I would've been wrong. Torin's real parents are murdered. The man and woman who appear to be Torin's parents in the intro are kidnapped. Torin's "father," had sent Torin on an errand, which Torin was trying to escape from doing. He then says to his friend that he doesn't want to run errands his whole life, he wants to go on an adventure. Right after that, he learns a tough lesson: Be careful what you wish for.

7. How many cannon balls do you need to have once you are in the cannon?

From Quiz "Torin's Passage" Part 3

Answer: One

There is a thin patch of land in the middle of the lava that's a good distance from where Torin stands. That thin patch leads to the way out and down to the next world, so Torin needs to get there. The only way to get there is in the cannon. Also you need to wright just the right amount so that the cannon will take you to safety. If you have too many cannon balls or if you don't have any at all, you will end up in the lava. Al Lowe did this so he could throw in a gag, one of the funniest in the game in my opinion. When Torin lands on the other side, he lands face down with his face in the mud. Boogle laughs at him. Then the cannon ball falls on Boogle. That puts him in his place!

8. Who lives in the house to the left of where Torin begins chapter two?

From Quiz "Torin's Passage" Part 2

Answer: The Bitternuts

When you go to that house, the screen suddenly turns to black and white, and you see the inside of a house with a grumpy old lady, a quite male cook, and a child. Every time somebody says a line, a laugh track plays (even though none of them are funny). This section of the game is meant to parody 1950s sitcoms, and it's about as funny as the average sitcom.

9. What is the name of Torin's pet?

From Quiz Torin's Passage

Answer: Boogle

Boogle is a creature unique to the "Torin's Passage" universe. He looks a little like a purple cat, but unlike a cat, Boogle has shape-shifting abilities. When he looks at an object or a creature, he instantly knows how to turn into that object or creature. Boogle's shapeshifting abilities are essential for Torin to be able to complete his quest. Many "King's Quest 5" players wish Cedric were half as useful as Boogle. Boogle also can't speak, at least not like a human, which is another thing "King's Quest 5" players wish were true of Cedric.

10. When Torin travels to Tenebrous, he flies head first into a pipe and is knocked out. How does Boogle save him?

From Quiz "Torin's Passage" Part 3

Answer: He holds ammonia up to his nose

For one brief moment of this game, you play as Boogle. The puzzle is obvious. You are supposed to use the one Boogle ability you haven't used yet, which is to turn him into a nurse. Boogle then attempts CPR on Torin, but he refuses to breathe into Torin's mouth. So he does something quick and easier. He breaks the fourth wall by reaching out to the interface icon and switching from his inventory to Torin's inventory, and he takes the ammonia out of his pocket and hold it up to his nose. The strong smell revives him. Interestingly, while Boogle speaks his own language, in this part of the game you can make out some of what he says. You can hear him say "Are you okay?" When Torin regains consciousness he says "Thanks Boogle, how did you do that?" Then, Boogle goes back to being incrompehensible.

11. What characters in Escarpa have a running gag that is exactly the same as the running gag involving Freddy Pharkas and P.H. Balance?

From Quiz "Torin's Passage" Part 2

Answer: The king and queen

The queen has a habit of whispering things about the king that are not very nice. The king then says "Eh? What was that?" The queen then speaks up and then says something that sounds similar but is completely different from what she originally said. You'll come across this same running gag in "Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist" if you show all your items to the banker.

12. What is Torin's last name?

From Quiz Torin's Passage

Answer: Fahrman

Torin introduces himself as "Torin Fahrman" in a couple of places. The snails think he is saying "farm hand."

13. While traveling through the pipe, Torin bangs his head on what?

From Quiz "Torin's Passage" Part 3

Answer: The menu

When Torin's tarevling through the pipe, the pipe moves higher up with each screen you go through. Eventually, the pipe is at the top of the screen, and when Torin makes it three quarters away across, he hits his head on the menu and says "Ow! Uh, can you get that?" This is another example of breaking the fourth wall. The puzzle is simply to click away from the menu. Then Torin will say thank you, and then he'll keep traveling.

14. What is Mrs. Bitternut bitter about?

From Quiz "Torin's Passage" Part 2

Answer: The king never invites her to any social events

Mrs. Bitternut tells Torin that she hates that the king never invites her over to any parties. Torin resolves that by giving the king a crystal shard to complete his collection of crystal shards. The king rewards him with an invitation the the Royal Ball. Torin doesn't want it, since he doesn't plan on staying in Escarpa for long, so he gives it to Mrs. Bitternut. Mrs. Bitternut then promises Torin that he can take anything from her house as a reward. She doesn't keep her promise for long. When Torin sees something he wants she is quick to stop him until her son tells her to let him have it. She gives into her son's request, but then tells Torin not to take anything else.

15. Torin is told that who is responsible for what happened to the man and woman who raised him?

From Quiz Torin's Passage

Answer: Lycentia

When Torin sees what happens to his parents he goes home and screams "What happened?" An old man in a cloak tells Torin that he saw everything, and he says Lycentia did it. The old man certainly does not look trustworthy, but there's no one else around to tell Torin what happened, so Torin trusts the old man and vows to find Lycnetia and force her to release his parents then he walks off. The old man, whose name is revealed to be Pecand if you have the subtitles on, then lets down his hood so we, the players, can see his evil-looking head as he says "I'm sure you will" in a sinister voice. Unfortunately, we see this, but Torin doesn't because he's already walked off.

16. On what charge is Torin arrested the first time?

From Quiz "Torin's Passage" Part 3

Answer: Cruelty to plants

When Torin crawls to the end of the pipe, he realizes that he's high up in the air and it's a long way down. Gravity suspends itself for a second to give Torin time to realize what's about to happen, then garvity reasserts itself. Torin and Boogle fall a long way With Torin screaming "Aaaaaaaaahhh 'catches breath' ahhhhhh" and then "Save us, Boogle!" Boogle misunderstands Torin and he turns into a safe right above where Torin lands. Torin lands through the ground, killing a bunch of plants in a process. It's obvious to us that Torin didn't mean to kill the plants, but Torin is arrested anyway. The "Torin's Passage" planet is a layered planet where there's one world on atop, then there's a world below that, then there's a world below that, and so on. The Lands Above get all the sunlight, since there's nothing blocking it from getting there, but in order for sunlight to get to The Lands Below, it has to travel through crystals, which make up mountains and cities in the Lands Above and travels through all The Lands Below and end in The Null Void. Tenebrous is the lowest land other than The Null Void, so it gets the least amount of sunlight, making it hard for plants to use photosynthesis and grow. However, in the part of Tenebrous that Torin lands in, plants seem to be growing just fine.

17. What must you do to get rid of the two-headed vulture?

From Quiz "Torin's Passage" Part 2

Answer: Send food flying near it

One of the head would've just gladly moved aside and let Torin pass, but the other head is apparently in charge. The trick to this puzzle is that you can't just give it food. That won't make it move. Instead, you have to utilize a ramp-like rock that's jutting out right above and drop some food down the ramp so the vulture chases it. The nice thing about this is that if you just give it the food, at least you can always go back to the king and queen's place and get another thing of meat. In most earlier Sierra games if you wasted an item like that, you'd never be able to get the item back and the game would be unwinnable. This game can't be made unwinnable.

18. Torin is from where?

From Quiz Torin's Passage

Answer: The Lands Above

Pecand tells Torin that Lycentia was banished to the Lands Below years ago. Torin then says "The Lands Below? She must've been evil to be sent there" which implies that he is from The Lands Above.

19. Boogle gets caught by who?

From Quiz "Torin's Passage" Part 3

Answer: Dreep

Dreep is Lycentia's pet. He is a blue monster vaguely resembling some kind of monkey. When Torin's in jail, he feels depressed to have come all this way only to be arrested and not knwoing if he will ever find his parents or if Boogle is okay. Boogle appears just outside of the jail cell. This raises Torin's spirits briefly. Then Dreep captures Boogle, making Torin even more sad. Then the cop sets Torin free with a warning. The capture of Boogle is a symbol to the player that we don't need him anymore.

20. What makes the tree below the vulture's nest grow?

From Quiz "Torin's Passage" Part 2

Answer: Dragon poop

In a classic moment of Sierra moon logic, Torin must go into a stinky cave. He picks up a tile, which makes sense, but then he decides he wants to see more of the cave for some reason. Well, he can't fit through that tiny hole, so he sends Boogle, and, after some shape-shifts from his pet, Torin sees something in the cave and says "Wow, Boogle! It's brown and soft and smells terrible. We just got to have some of that!" Torin then tells Boogle to turn into a shovel so he can get some of it. Boogle is understandably reluctant, but Torin is his boss. When we get the item, the game tells us that it's dragon poop. Torin then drops some of it on the tree and says "this will either make the tree grow, or kill it completely." Amazingly, the former happens. Torin pulled a Roger Wilco and succeeded with dumb luck.

21. What happened to the sap tree's mother?

From Quiz "Torin's Passage" Part 3

Answer: She fell in the forest and nobody heard her

Torin comes across a very sentimental sap tree. Since the tree lives in the bottom world, he is very well-rooted, which means that old sad memories just stick to him. Torin tells asks the tree if he knows Lycentia, and tells him that she is an evil sorceress who kidnapped his parents. The tree doesn't know Lycentia, but he can relate to losing his parents. He was transplanted at birth. His dad was cut down in the prime of his life by a guy chasing a wolf and his mom fell in the forest and nobody heard her. Sadly, this isn't a "King's Quest" game, so we don't help the tree. We just use the sap it cries to capture the silkworms.

22. Boogle is quite reluctant to do a quite a few things Torin says to do. In which case is Boogle right?

From Quiz "Torin's Passage" Part 2

Answer: Climbing down the ladder

Although Boogle can't talk, you can tell by the sounds that he makes that he does not want to do any of these things. However, Torin needs the Boogle shovel to get the dragon poop. He needs to get to the other cliff to get four of the tiles he needs. Lastly, the lower area has a lot of things that Torin needs. However, when you tell Torin to climb down the ladder, he says "This ladder looks a little rickety, but I'm going to try it anyway." Boogle makes a sound that basically means "WHAT!?!?" In this instance, Boogle turns out to be right. the ladder falls apart immediately, and Torin falls to his death. Interestingly, the death message says "Don't believe signs?" but the sign shows nothing more than a butt and a red circle with a red diagonal line drawn through the butt. I don't see how you would get the message from that sign.

23. The guard refuses to let Torin go where he wants to go. How does Torin get the guard to allow him to go where he wants to go?

From Quiz Torin's Passage

Answer: Torin tells the guard that he's his replacement

When Torin first talks to the guard, the guard says that he lets no one in except his replacement, and that his replacement is ten years late and he doesn't know where he is. The guard then closes the door. Torin realizes that the guard is an old man whose memory is fading, so Torin knocks on the door again and tells the guard that he's his replacement. The guard believes him, but then tells him that he has to make the guard his last meal before he replaces him.

24. Who is the only character outside of The Null Void who knows Lycentia?

From Quiz "Torin's Passage" Part 3

Answer: The voice recorder

After asking almost everybody on the planet about Lycentia, Torin meets a sunflower who doesn't know her, but is able to tell Torin about someone who does. It's an old man who works in a theater and records voices. The sunflower helps Torin get to the theater after Torin captures the silkworms that were eating its friends. In the theater, Torin finally meets someone who knows her. The voice recorder tells Torin that you can't get to Lycentia because she was tossed in The Null Void many years ago, and you can't just freely enter The Null Void because all the exits were sealed off so you can only go there if you're sent there. The voice recorder considers his tape of Lycnetia's voice to be his prized possession because it is the rarest voice he owns. However, the voice recorder does not have any voices from The Lands Above, because the recording technology didn't exist the last time people from The Lands Above visited Tenebrous. Torin, being from The Lands Above, offers to have his own voice recorded in exchange for a recording of Lycentia's voice. The voice recorder accepts that deal.

25. Torin encounters a pair of what?

From Quiz "Torin's Passage" Part 2

Answer: Skunks

Torin encounters two talking skunks who won't let him pass. He gets pass them by using a clothespin on his nose so he can't smell them and a red carpet as a shield. The skunks give Torin everything they got, but all they can do is stink up the carpet. They then runaway scared. Torin decides to keep the stinky carpet in his pocket. Somehow, a skunk-sprayed carpet does not bother Torin, Boogle, or anyone he encounters while he's carrying it.

26. What kind of berries does Torin make a juice out of?

From Quiz Torin's Passage

Answer: Chuck Berries

When Torin makes berry juice for the guard, he asks boogle to turn into an axe. Boogle turns into a guitar and Torin plays a little rock music with the Boogle guitar. Torin, convinced that it was the berries that made him do that, asks the guard what kind of berries they are. The guard replies "Chick Berries."

27. What does Bags Bunny want?

From Quiz "Torin's Passage" Part 3

Answer: A new job

When Torin arrives in the theater, Bags is working for a drunk archer. The archer tires to shoot at an apple that is stuck between the bunny's ears. The arrow hits the apple, but only because Bags moves. Bags then quits. When Torin talks to Bags, Bags tells him that he needs a new job, but he won't just accept any job. He needs a good place to live and and he needs to be paid on time. Fortunately for him, it just so happens that Zippy the Magician wants a new act and he has a top hat. Torin borrow the top hat and offers it to Bags, who excitedly accepts it, and then he gives it back to Zippy so Zippy can pull a rabbit out of his hat like a real magician. Both of them happily accept this deal.

28. What does Veder want?

From Quiz "Torin's Passage" Part 2

Answer: A comfortable seat

Veder spends all of his time sitting on a rock and thinking about deep, philosophical questions. This is quite uncomfortable, and he points that out. Torin gives him a cushion he can sit on. Veder rewards him with what he calls "the instrument of my torture" and what the rest of us call a tile. The music that plays during this part is very nice. It's unfortuante that it only plays on this one screen.

29. What does the guard want as his final meal?

From Quiz Torin's Passage

Answer: Slughetti and Peat Moss

The guard tells Torin that he has to cook the guard his final meal before he officially replaces him. The guard tells Torin that he wants Slughetti and Peat Moss (slugs and moss form a nearby bog). Torin has to risk his life to get these things for the guard.

30. What does Torin need to give the king to get his tile?

From Quiz "Torin's Passage" Part 2

Answer: A reason

Torin sees a lot of interesting and similar looking tiles. He wants to collect them all. The king of Escarpa will not let Torin take his tile unless he has a good reason. To do that, Torin needs to find a place that could properly hold these tiles. Torin finds something with a board that could perfectly hold nine tiles. Torin then tells the king about what he saw, and that he thinks it could lead to the next world. The king then agrees to let Torin have the tile.
