1. When the game proper begins, we are controlling an old French farmer called Emile Chatillon, who has just been drafted for the war. What is his son-in-law's name?

"EverQuest" was originally designed by Verant Interactive, an offshoot of EA Games' 989 Studio. In 2000 (between the releases of the "Scars of Velious" and "Shadows of Luclin" expansions) Verant was bought out by Sony Online Entertainment, and "EverQuest" became its signature title. McQuaid then formed Sigil and announced developed of a then undisclosed title, which became "Vanguard." History came full circle for McQuaid and those who follow his games in May 2007 when he sold his interest in Sigil Games to Sony. The launch of "Vanguard" was less successful than expected, and financial pressures left McQuaid with a choice between shutting the game down or finding a suitable buyer with the financial means to keep it alive. "World of Warcraft" was developed by Blizzard, an entirely separate company. "Star Wars: Galaxies" was developed by SOE, however McQuaid had no involvmenet in that project as he had already left to form Sigil by the time it entered development. "Tanarus" is an online tank combat game developed by SOE, which McQuaid also had nothing to do with.

"Lucky" Freddie is a Louisiana Creole who enlisted in the French military (specifically, the Foreign Legion) after the war started. He is large and strong, and is handy with explosives, wire cutters, and his fists. Freddie is first seen fending off several French soldiers who are pushing him around. While they cannot do any harm to Freddie (no one can!), he still needs Emile's help to shoo them off. This is the start of a wonderful and tragic friendship.

You start out harvesting berries. By dropping a tribe member on the large fish bone while there is a fire, you will cause the person to bring three bones to the fire, making knives. If you drop a tribe member on the new knives (found near the Research Table) they will harvest a bigger amount of berries.

Millions of soldiers did not last long in this bloody war.

Emile meets Walt while working as a cook at the German camp where he was imprisoned. Walt is a medic's dog, and is extremely intelligent, friendly and loyal. Emile and Walt appear in the main menu, and feature prominently in the game's trailers and advertisement artwork.

Diplomacy is probably one of "Vanguard's" most innovative concepts. Each diplomacy encounter (referred to as 'parleys') consists of a card game in which the player selects a deck of five cards to play against the five cards the computer opponent possesses, in which one wins by reducing their own points to zero. Diplomacy includes its own realm of items and attributes that grant a player higher power in parleys. Through diplomacy players can unlock quests, activate beneficial effects in cities, and gain items.

The game follows the course of the war from 1914 to 1917, and puts our characters in many of the most important battles and events, including the first gas attack on Ypres. The game also provides a great deal of historical information about each location, about items and technology used in the field, and about the psychological condition of the people who fought there. It also does not try to "pretty things up", so expect the chlorine gas attack to be quite gruesome - and it only gets worse from there.

The game is a commemoration of the Great War, and is committed to an anti-war message, which means that it does not glorify the war in any way. Following this guideline, it's not surprising that no one actually kills the "Big Bad" of the game at all. Even Freddie, who wants to avenge his wife's death and is the one who catches up to Von Dorf and beats him up badly, can't bring himself to kill the Baron - saying that it would make him no better a man. Von Dorf is, however, relieved from duty by the Germans, which the game calls "a fate worse than death for him".

Carpenters primarily make ships, Minerologists primarily make houses, Armorsmiths primarily make heavy armor, Weaponsmiths primarily make weapons, Leatherworkers primarily make medium armor, and Tailors primarily make light armor. Each class also has the capability to make a variety of utility items.

Each driving sequence is an arcade-style mini-game that you have to go through once in a while, but it is quite short and fun even for those without twitch skills. It consists primarily of having to maneuver around obstacles, whose appearance is perfectly timed with a piece of classical music. It might be a little too ironic to include the 9th Symphony, which is the anthem of the European Union, in a game dealing with an insanely-deadly war between European countries.

Offensive fighters consist of Rangers, Bards, Rogues, and Monks. Their role is to deal damage via the use of weapons and other physical attacks. Defensive fighters are usually referred to as 'tanks' and consist of Warriors, Paladins, and Dreadknights. They are capable of dealing a moderate degree of physical damage, however their primary role is to occupy enemy creatures and absorb damage from them so their weaker allies can survive. Casters include Wizards, Necromancers, Psionicists, and Druids. Their role is to deal magical damage at range. Priests' primary role is healing and curing their allies, and they include Clerics, Blood Mages, Shaman, and Disciples. Most classes have some degree of special or utility ability beyond the primary role of their archetype.

In what may be one of the most heart-breaking moments in video-game history, Emile is executed at the end of the game for killing a superior officer. He was only doing it because said officer had gone raving mad and was sending soldiers to their deaths, but the army doesn't care. What makes this scene even more heart-rending is the fact that we, the players, must walk Emile to the post where he will be shot. Excuse me, I think I'm going to go and cry somewhere for a little while.
