Video Games T-Z: 'V' Trivia Questions

1. When the game proper begins, we are controlling an old French farmer called Emile Chatillon, who has just been drafted for the war. What is his son-in-law's name?

From Quiz
"Valiant Hearts" (PC, PlayStation, Xbox)

Answer: Karl

Emile's daughter had just given birth to his grandson, and now her German husband, Karl, has been deported from France and drafted into the German army. During the course of the game, Emile will brave virtually every major battle on the western front.

2. How many people are in your tribe when you begin if you do not get a woman who is nursing?

From Quiz "Virtual Villagers: The Tree of Life"

Answer: Five

It is possible to get up to ten when you start, but to do so you would have to choose five nursing women for your journey. This is not a smart idea because no one can gather food. Nursing women and children won't work!

3. Who drives a school bus?

From Quiz "Vigilante 8" for Playstation and N64

Answer: Molo

The School Bus is the heaviest car in the game. Although the bus has poor speed and avoidance, its massive weight more than makes up for those shortcomings.

4. "Vanguard" was developed by Sigil Games, a game development company headed by Brad McQuaid. What other online game did he lead the development of prior to taking part in "Vanguard"?

From Quiz "Vanguard: Saga of Heroes"

Answer: "EverQuest"

"EverQuest" was originally designed by Verant Interactive, an offshoot of EA Games' 989 Studio. In 2000 (between the releases of the "Scars of Velious" and "Shadows of Luclin" expansions) Verant was bought out by Sony Online Entertainment, and "EverQuest" became its signature title. McQuaid then formed Sigil and announced developed of a then undisclosed title, which became "Vanguard." History came full circle for McQuaid and those who follow his games in May 2007 when he sold his interest in Sigil Games to Sony. The launch of "Vanguard" was less successful than expected, and financial pressures left McQuaid with a choice between shutting the game down or finding a suitable buyer with the financial means to keep it alive. "World of Warcraft" was developed by Blizzard, an entirely separate company. "Star Wars: Galaxies" was developed by SOE, however McQuaid had no involvmenet in that project as he had already left to form Sigil by the time it entered development. "Tanarus" is an online tank combat game developed by SOE, which McQuaid also had nothing to do with.

5. At the train station on his way to the front lines, Emile meets a man being harassed by other French soldiers. What is this man's nationality?

From Quiz "Valiant Hearts" (PC, PlayStation, Xbox)

Answer: American

"Lucky" Freddie is a Louisiana Creole who enlisted in the French military (specifically, the Foreign Legion) after the war started. He is large and strong, and is handy with explosives, wire cutters, and his fists. Freddie is first seen fending off several French soldiers who are pushing him around. While they cannot do any harm to Freddie (no one can!), he still needs Emile's help to shoo them off. This is the start of a wonderful and tragic friendship.

6. What is your tribe's first food source?

From Quiz "Virtual Villagers: The Tree of Life"

Answer: Berries

You start out harvesting berries. By dropping a tribe member on the large fish bone while there is a fire, you will cause the person to bring three bones to the fire, making knives. If you drop a tribe member on the new knives (found near the Research Table) they will harvest a bigger amount of berries.

7. What does Beezwax say when you pick him in the car select menu?

From Quiz "Vigilante 8" for Playstation and N64

8. Prior to the release of "Vanguard," Sigil announced their intent to launch with fifteen playable classes, however, two were not ready at launch. Which two did not make it?

From Quiz "Vanguard: Saga of Heroes"

Answer: Berserker and Inquisitor

The berserker was intended to be an offensive fighter that relied on raw power to inflict damage, while the inquisitor was described as a defensive fighter ("tank") with a specialization in defending against magical attacks. The classes had not made it into the game at the date of this quiz's creation, and it is unclear if they will in the future. The most commonly cited reason for the classes' absence is that they simply duplicated the offerings of other similar classes.

9. What is Emile's duty during his very first charge against the German lines?

From Quiz "Valiant Hearts" (PC, PlayStation, Xbox)

Answer: Flag-bearer

Emile charges along with the rest of his platoon, but they slowly get whittled down by enemy fire, until Emile is the only one left. He keeps charging, but is eventually struck by an artillery shell, wounded, and captured by the enemy. His stint as a flag-bearer is over barely a few minutes after it began. Millions of soldiers did not last long in this bloody war.

10. How do you get a nursery for your tribe?

From Quiz "Virtual Villagers: The Tree of Life"

Answer: Reach level three in Learning

There is no Technology category called Education. Although Telling Stories to children are fun, (especially to watch the adult act it out) it will not earn you a nursery. Once you do get the nursery, only an experienced tribe member can teach.

12. Several areas in "Vanguard" are named after members of the game's design team, such as "The Deebs" and "Keejay Cove". What sorts of areas are these?

From Quiz "Vanguard: Saga of Heroes"

Answer: player housing areas

The player housing areas are plots of land that players can purchase and build structures, which they can then decorate and use for storage of items. The designers did not want to allow players to build houses everywhere, as this would lead to a glutted landscape, so the housing areas were created with organized plots in places where they fit into the landscape.

13. Who is the first character to meet Walt the dog?

From Quiz "Valiant Hearts" (PC, PlayStation, Xbox)

Answer: Emile

Emile meets Walt while working as a cook at the German camp where he was imprisoned. Walt is a medic's dog, and is extremely intelligent, friendly and loyal. Emile and Walt appear in the main menu, and feature prominently in the game's trailers and advertisement artwork.

18. How does diplomacy in "Vanguard" take place?

From Quiz "Vanguard: Saga of Heroes"

Answer: In the form of a card game

Diplomacy is probably one of "Vanguard's" most innovative concepts. Each diplomacy encounter (referred to as 'parleys') consists of a card game in which the player selects a deck of five cards to play against the five cards the computer opponent possesses, in which one wins by reducing their own points to zero. Diplomacy includes its own realm of items and attributes that grant a player higher power in parleys. Through diplomacy players can unlock quests, activate beneficial effects in cities, and gain items.

19. Where does the first gas attack occur?

From Quiz "Valiant Hearts" (PC, PlayStation, Xbox)

Answer: Ypres

The game follows the course of the war from 1914 to 1917, and puts our characters in many of the most important battles and events, including the first gas attack on Ypres. The game also provides a great deal of historical information about each location, about items and technology used in the field, and about the psychological condition of the people who fought there. It also does not try to "pretty things up", so expect the chlorine gas attack to be quite gruesome - and it only gets worse from there.

20. How do you make your villagers throw up soapy stew?

From Quiz "Virtual Villagers: The Tree of Life"

Answer: Heat up some fresh water (not saltwater) add three soapy-smelling plants, add food, eat!

21. Who is Convoy's stubborn relative?

From Quiz "Vigilante 8" for Playstation and N64

Answer: Sheila

Sheila is the one who drives the Strider. The Strider is a small car that has a high avoidance rating.

22. There are several distinct races of humans available for players to select in "Vanguard." What are they?

From Quiz "Vanguard: Saga of Heroes"

Answer: Thestran, Qaliathari, Kojani, and Mordebi

Three of the human races are named for their continents of origin: Thestrans come from Thestra, Kojanis come from Kojan, and Qaliathari come from Qalia. Mordebi humans also come from Qalia, however they are distinct from the Qaliathari. Raki, Vulmane, and Kurashasa are anthropomorphic races derived, respectively, from foxes, wolves, and big cats. Varanjar and Varathari are barbarian races coming from Thestra and Qalia. Dark, wood, and high are the three varieties of elves.

23. Who eventually kills the evil Baron von Dorf?

From Quiz "Valiant Hearts" (PC, PlayStation, Xbox)

Answer: No one

The game is a commemoration of the Great War, and is committed to an anti-war message, which means that it does not glorify the war in any way. Following this guideline, it's not surprising that no one actually kills the "Big Bad" of the game at all. Even Freddie, who wants to avenge his wife's death and is the one who catches up to Von Dorf and beats him up badly, can't bring himself to kill the Baron - saying that it would make him no better a man. Von Dorf is, however, relieved from duty by the Germans, which the game calls "a fate worse than death for him".

24. The chief sent you on a long journey across the island of Isola... but why?

From Quiz "Virtual Villagers: The Tree of Life"

25. What does Convoy's Moth Truck's Special do?

From Quiz "Vigilante 8" for Playstation and N64

Answer: Sends out a tire filled with dynamite to attack the targeted adversary.

Convoy's Vigilante 8: Second Offense truck, the Livingston Truck, uses horns to blow the opponent away. Darkside drives really swift to ram an opponent in Twisted Metal: Black. The Moth Truck does not come with a trailer, however, the Livingston truck has a destructible trailer.

26. Players in "Vanguard" can choose from three basic crafting classes, known as archetypes, which they can subsequently specialize further. What are the three crafting archetypes?

From Quiz "Vanguard: Saga of Heroes"

Answer: Artificers, Blacksmiths, and Outfitters

Each crafting archetype has two classes, which players must choose between at level ten. These classes are Carpentery and Minerology for Artificing, Weaponsmithing and Armorsmithing for Blacksmithing, and Tailoring and Leatherworking for Outfitting. Carpenters primarily make ships, Minerologists primarily make houses, Armorsmiths primarily make heavy armor, Weaponsmiths primarily make weapons, Leatherworkers primarily make medium armor, and Tailors primarily make light armor. Each class also has the capability to make a variety of utility items.

27. Which famous musical piece DOES NOT accompany any of the driving sequences?

From Quiz "Valiant Hearts" (PC, PlayStation, Xbox)

Answer: Beethoven's 9th symphony, 4th movement

Each driving sequence is an arcade-style mini-game that you have to go through once in a while, but it is quite short and fun even for those without twitch skills. It consists primarily of having to maneuver around obstacles, whose appearance is perfectly timed with a piece of classical music. It might be a little too ironic to include the 9th Symphony, which is the anthem of the European Union, in a game dealing with an insanely-deadly war between European countries.

28. Who is the guy that has lightning as his specialty?

From Quiz "Vigilante 8" for Playstation and N64

Answer: Slick Clyde

Slick Clyde has a lightning attack as his special that sends out a bolt of lightning to temporarily immobilize and damage an opponent's vehicle. When Slick Clyde summons his attack, he yells, "Lightning!"

29. "Vanguard" offers four different adventuring archetypes (within which there are specialized classes) for players to choose from. What are they?

From Quiz "Vanguard: Saga of Heroes"

Answer: Offensive Fighters, Defensive Fighters, Priests, and Casters

Offensive fighters consist of Rangers, Bards, Rogues, and Monks. Their role is to deal damage via the use of weapons and other physical attacks. Defensive fighters are usually referred to as 'tanks' and consist of Warriors, Paladins, and Dreadknights. They are capable of dealing a moderate degree of physical damage, however their primary role is to occupy enemy creatures and absorb damage from them so their weaker allies can survive. Casters include Wizards, Necromancers, Psionicists, and Druids. Their role is to deal magical damage at range. Priests' primary role is healing and curing their allies, and they include Clerics, Blood Mages, Shaman, and Disciples. Most classes have some degree of special or utility ability beyond the primary role of their archetype.

30. The last scene where we control any of the characters has us participating in Emile's...?

From Quiz "Valiant Hearts" (PC, PlayStation, Xbox)

Answer: Execution

In what may be one of the most heart-breaking moments in video-game history, Emile is executed at the end of the game for killing a superior officer. He was only doing it because said officer had gone raving mad and was sending soldiers to their deaths, but the army doesn't care. What makes this scene even more heart-rending is the fact that we, the players, must walk Emile to the post where he will be shot. Excuse me, I think I'm going to go and cry somewhere for a little while.
