British Road Rules Trivia Questions

1. After passing your driving test, you suffer permanent ill health. This affects your driving. What must you do?

From Quiz
The British Driving Test I

Answer: Inform the licensing authority

In the event of a short-term illness like flu, that affects your ability to drive, you would simply not drive until you are recovered. For a long-term illness, contact the authorities.

2. There are three main shapes to UK traffic signs. Each shape is particular to a specific 'class' of sign. Which shape are 'warning' signs?

From Quiz UK Motoring Rules for Visitors

Answer: Triangular

Triangular signs give you advance warning of an upcoming hazard, i.e. a bend in the road. Circular signs give orders, i.e. the maximum speed limit for that stretch of road. Square ( or rectangular ) signs give information, i.e. distances and directions. There is only one octagonal sign, and that is the Stop sign at a junction.

3. Where must you never overtake?

From Quiz The Official Highway Code (U.K.)

Answer: Double white lines

Rule 165. Double white lines are a warning to the car driver that the road is hazardous. Other places that you should never overtake are a corner or a bend, the top of a hill, a humpback bridge and never overtake on a pedestrian crossing.

4. A excessively heavy load on your roof rack will do what?

From Quiz The British Driving Test I

Answer: Reduce stability

A heavy load will shift the centre of gravity of your vehicle and could make you more likely to skid or even roll over. To avoid this avoid putting too much weight on the rack.

5. In a built up area, at what time must you not use your horn?

From Quiz The Official Highway Code (U.K.)

Answer: 11.30 pm and 7.00 am

Rule 112. The exception to this rule is when another road user poses a danger. The sounding of your horn while at standstill is also illegal. Only use your horn while traveling if you need to warn other drivers or pedestrians of your presence.

6. What's the maximum speed limit for a car on Dual carriage-ways?

From Quiz The Official Highway Code (U.K.)

Answer: 70 mph

Rule 123. The maximum speed limit in built up areas is 30mph. On Single carriage-ways you are restricted to 60mph and on a motorway 70mph is the maximum speed limit. There may be times when speed limits are reduced, look out for the signs. Always take the traffic conditions into account as the top speed limits are not always appropriate.

7. When driving along a UK motorway (freeway), under what circumstances are you allowed to drive in the outside lane?

From Quiz UK Motoring Rules for Visitors

Answer: To overtake

The outside, or third lane, is supposed to be for overtaking only. However, many drivers treat this as the 'fast' lane and use it to try and get where they are going a lot faster than they would normally. It is, though, officially designated as an overtaking lane, and once you have passed the relevant vehicle/s you should pull back into one of the other lanes.

8. What's the typical stopping distance at 70 mph?

From Quiz The Official Highway Code (U.K.)

Answer: 96 metres ( 315 feet)

Rule 126. Always drive to the conditions of the road. Allow at least a two second gap between you and the vehicle in front. Don't forget to increase the distance in poor weather conditions.

9. What type of emergency vehicle is fitted with a green flashing beacon?

From Quiz The British Driving Test I

Answer: Doctor's car

Doctors on emergency call may display a flashing green beacon. Slow-moving vehicles have amber flashing beacons. Police, fire and ambulance service vehicles have blue flashing beacons.

10. In windy conditions, when do you need to take extra care?

From Quiz The British Driving Test I

Answer: Passing pedal cyclists

In windy conditions, cyclists are all too easily blown about and may wobble or steer off course. So hang back until they see you and are ready for the vehicle passing by them.

11. What is most likely to cause high fuel consumption?

From Quiz The British Driving Test I

Answer: Harsh braking and accelerating

Harsh braking and accelerating is one of the major causes of high fuel consumption. This causes the engine to take more petrol after each brake.

12. In the UK, under which circumstances can you pass through a red light?

From Quiz UK Motoring Rules for Visitors

Answer: Never

There is no excuse for passing a red light. Red means stop. Officially, even emergency vehicles must stop. When you approach a set of traffic lights, you may go on green, you may also go on amber (yellow), but only if it would be dangerous to stop.

13. In the distance you see a long black sign with white chevrons. What does it mean?

From Quiz UK Motoring Rules for Visitors

Answer: A sharp deviation in the road

These signs are usually, but not always, encountered on rural roads. The chevrons point in the direction of the deviation. Sometimes they are also used at roundabouts, although it is more usual to see a white arrow on a circular blue sign.

14. Finally, always remember that here in the UK we drive on the _______ side.

From Quiz UK Motoring Rules for Visitors

Answer: Left &lefthand

I hope you found this quiz informative. The online Highway Code can be found here: http://www.highwaycode.gov.uk/ Safe driving.
