Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A lizard that is bigger than the opposition will always be noticed. Named after an island in Indonesia, what is the world's largest lizard?

Answer: Komodo dragon

Found on several islands of Indonesia and weighing up to three hundred pounds, Komodo dragons were unknown to western science before the early twentieth century. They have forked tongues, which they use to sense their prey, and venom glands which secrete toxic proteins.
2. Deserved or not, a reputation as a man-killer earns a lizard respect. Which is the only poisonous lizard found in the United States?

Answer: Gila monster

The Gila monster is found in the southwestern United States and the northwest of Mexico. Although venomous, it is heavy and slow-moving and therefore poses little threat to humans.
3. Not every lizard can be beautiful, but sometimes being memorably ugly is just as effective. Noted for its hideous appearance, the thorny devil can be found where?

Answer: Australia

Covered in spikes and with a bizarre appendage sometimes called a false head, the thorny devil derives its scientific name, Moloch horridus, from the Canaanite god Moloch, described in "Paradise Lost" as a horrible king smeared with the blood of human sacrifice. Living in the Australian interior, the thorny devil subsists on a diet of ants, consuming thousands of them every day.
4. Dependability has a lot going for it. What can be said with confidence about any desert grassland whiptail lizard?

Answer: It is female

Desert grassland whiptail lizards reproduce by parthenogenesis, so are exclusively female. They are small and mainly brown, though adolescents have bright blue tails. They are found in the south western United States and in Mexico.
5. There will always be a niche for a master of disguise. The bearded pygmy chameleon can pass itself off as what?

Answer: A leaf

Originally found in Tanzania and Kenya, this lizard is also known as the bearded leaf chameleon. It is drably coloured and grows to a maximum length of three inches. Compressing its body produces a lateral stripe and allows it to mimic a dead leaf.
6. It always pays to look good on the catwalk. Topping any reptilian best-dressed list, the frilled-neck lizard makes its home in which part of the world?

Answer: Australia/New Guinea

Also known as the frilled agama or frilled dragon, the frilled lizard is notable for a pleated skin flap surrounding its neck. Found in northern Australia and southern New Guinea, it spends most of its time in trees.
7. As might be expected, the Jesus lizard is pretty miraculous. With which extraordinary feat is it associated?

Answer: Walking on water

Jesus lizards, or basilisks, are found in Mexico and Central America. Flaps of skin between the toes of the rear feet increase the surface area, enabling the lizard to run fast over the surface of water for up to several yards before starting to swim.
8. An exotic name helps to cultivate an air of reptilian mystery. Which of these creatures is not really a lizard?

Answer: Bombay duck

The Bombay duck, or bummalo, is not a lizard but a lizardfish. The rhinoceros iguana is found on the island of Hispaniola, leopard geckos, though popular in the United States, live in the wild throughout eastern and southwestern Asia and the Chilean swift, also known as the jewel lizard, is found, not surprisingly, in Chile, as well as Argentina.
9. Becoming a national treasure can be the way to go. Three of these lizards enjoy protected status in Britain, but which is the odd one out?

Answer: Red dragon

The legendary red dragon is the symbol of Wales. The other three are the UK's only native lizards and, like all native British reptiles, are protected by law.
10. Never underestimate the appeal of the lizard next door. Which of these lizards can be found everywhere from Ireland to Japan?

Answer: Common lizard

The common, or viviparous, lizard can be found as far south as Italy and Spain and also north of the Arctic circle. Its range extends across northern Europe and central Asia, further north than that of any other land reptile.
