Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. These small cats have a reputation as fearless snake hunters. What are they?

Answer: Arabian sand cat

Their big ears and large faces are part of their adaptation for life in the deserts, where their ears are used to detect prey. Thick pads enable them to walk across the hot sand. The pale coloring helps keep this cat cool and well camouflaged. Their large forward-facing eyes allow them to judge distances very accurately.
2. Which fish is also known as an anemone fish?

Answer: Clownfish

A clownfish is an easily recognized saltwater aquarium fish. It is known as an anemone fish due to its symbiotic relationship with sea anemones. All clown fish are born male but once paired with another fish, the dominant one becomes female.
3. I have the head of a giraffe, the body and hoofs of an antelope and the markings of a zebra on my hindquarters. Which animal am I?

Answer: Okapi

The okapi is also known as a forest or zebra giraffe. These endangered animals live in the dense rainforests of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo and are closely related to giraffes. Their tongues measure 14 to 18 inches long just like those of giraffes.
4. Which of these owls is known as the tiger owl?

Answer: Great horned owl

Great horned owls can be found in all types of habitat although they prefer forested areas. Females are usually larger than males. They hunt mainly at night and have a diet consisting of mice, rats, rabbits, small birds and even skunks and opossums.
5. What is this strange looking creature?

Answer: Leafy seadragon

The leafy seadragon (Phycodurus eques) is known for its ornate camouflage and leaf-like appendages. These captivating fish are native to the shallow, kelp-covered rocky reefs of temperate southern Australian waters. They use dorsal and pectoral fins for movement and have very few predators.
6. The red panda is the only living animal in which of these families?

Answer: Ailuridae

Red pandas live in high-altitude rainy temperate and tropical forests where bamboo is readily available as this consists of over 80% of their diet. The red panda has a "false thumb" like the giant panda, although the two species are not related.

It is also known as a firefox, Himalayan raccoon, cat-bear, bear-cat and fox bear!
7. Which of these animal babies are born completely white?

Answer: Colobus monkey

Colobus monkeys are strict leaf eaters and are classified as Old World monkeys. They are native to Africa. The locals refer to them as "messengers of the gods" due to the time they spend moving between the tree tops and the ground. They do not possess opposable thumbs like all other primates but do not need them as much living in the tree tops.
8. A silverback gorilla is part of both the mountain and lowland gorilla species.

Answer: True

Gorillas can be divided into two groups - mountain and lowland gorillas. The mountain gorilla is the largest of all primates and can be found at higher elevations and more inland than the lowland gorilla. The lowland gorilla lives in thick rainforests on the Atlantic coast of Africa.

A silverback is an older male, over 13 years of age, that has developed grey/while hair over its back and shoulders as it ages. Only males are silverbacks.
9. What are the cells called that a jellyfish uses to sting other animals?

Answer: Cnidocytes

Cnidocytes are unique to coelenterates (jellyfish, hydra, sea anemones and corals). They contain a thread-like tubule that delivers a sting which is used for defense and capturing prey.

The origin of the word is from the Latin cnide (nettle) and -cyte (cell).
10. One or more of us act as sentries while the rest of the colony naps or forages. What are we?

Answer: Meerkats

A meerkat is a member of the Suricata genus with a lifespan of over 12 years in captivity and as long as 15 years in the wild. They are carnivores mainly easting insects, lizards, small birds and snakes, but sometimes will eat the roots of plants and even fruit. They live in groups that are called a "clan", "mob" or "gang"
