Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which animal father gives birth to his offspring?

Answer: seahorse

The female sea horse lays her eggs in a little pouch in the male's body. The dad has to carry all the eggs around until they hatch and hundreds of baby seahorses come shooting out.
2. How old is a tiger cub when it leaves home?

Answer: 2 years old

The mother tiger takes care of her cubs until she has another litter. By then the first cubs are about two years old. The mother ignores the elder cubs and takes good care of the young ones. It isn't cruel though because by then the two year olds are old enough to look after themselves.
3. Which animal mother is well known for pretending she's sick when danger approaches?

Answer: plover

If a hungry hunter threatens a plover's nest the mother bird pretends to be wounded. She flaps a wing as if it is broken and flutters weakly along the ground away from her nest.

She wants the enemy to think that she is injured and would be easy to capture. That way the hunter will go after her not her babies.
4. Why do some birds turn their eggs?

Answer: so every part of the egg gets a fair share of warmth

Some birds like swans turn their eggs so that every part of each egg gets its fair share of warmth.
Baby birds need warmth to grow. That is why a parent has to sit on the nest.
5. Which is the tallest baby animal?

Answer: giraffe

A baby giraffe is about 6 feet (2 meters) tall. That is taller than most adult people.
The mother giraffe is even taller and gives birth standing up. Her new baby hits the floor feet first.
Ouch! It's a long way to fall.
6. Which mother animal has her babies while locked up in a tree?

Answer: hornbill

While the female hornbill lays her eggs in a hole in a tree, the male helps her block up the door.
The male leaves a hole for her beak so he can feed her while she is stuck inside.
7. What does a stickleback's father do if the baby tries to get out of the nest?

Answer: spits them back into their nest

Male sticklebacks (a type of fish) care for their young. If a baby tries to swim away from the nest, the dad grabs it in his mouth and spits it back into the nest.
8. Which of these baby animals would have many relatives in its social group?

Answer: elephant

As well as having a mother, a baby elephant has lots of aunts. That's because female elephants live in a large family groups of up to fifty animals. In fact a new calf not only has plenty of aunts but also has grandmothers, sisters and cousins too!
9. How many miles away, on average, can a lion's roar be heard?

Answer: 5

A adult lion's roar can be heard from five miles away - sometimes even six. The roar usually lasts for 30 to 60 seconds. The sound can reach over 100 decibels.
10. Which of these animals use a nest which can be 100 years old?

Answer: bald eagle

American bald eagles fly back to their nest year after year. They make a few repairs and then lay their eggs. Some nests are more than 100 years old and are bigger and heavier than a car.
