Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The blue whale is larger than any other animal that has ever lived on earth, including all known dinosaurs. What makes the blue whale ideally suited for having such a gigantic size?

Answer: It lives in the ocean.

Because the blue whale spends its entire life in water it does not need to carry its weight like land animals do. Although it is a highly evolved mammal that does need to have great diving capabilities these are not the specific reasons for its impressive size.
2. Besides humans, what is the only known natural enemy of the blue whale?

Answer: Orca.

About one quarter of all blue whales observed have scars from being aggressively hit by orcas (killer whales). It is unknown how many blue whales die due to these orca attacks.
3. Do blue whales live and travel mostly in large groups?

Answer: No

Blue whales most commonly live alone or with one other individual. At times large groups of them can be observed in a tight proximity during feeding. It is unknown however if pairs of blue whales stay together for life or for shorter periods of time.
4. What part of the blue whale is used to identify each individual whale?

Answer: Dorsal fin.

The dorsal fin, which is located on the back of blue whales, has markings that are comparable to a human fingerprint. Marine biologists will often use the dorsal to identify one blue whale from another.
5. The color of the blue whale is made quite obvious by its name. However, when they are outside of the water what color do they appear as?

Answer: Blue-gray.

Not only do blue whales appear blue-gray when they are above the surface of the ocean, but their stomachs also have a yellowish tint from a multitude of microorganisms that live on the underbelly of their skin.
6. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, in which ocean are you unlikely to see a blue whale?

Answer: Arctic

At one time, all of the oceans hosted blue whales, but whaling significantly reduced their numbers. The Arctic no longer sees blue whales and they are much rarer than they used to be. The number of blue whales in a certain ocean depends on the various water temperatures and also when the whales are mating, calving, or feeding.
7. Pygmy blue whales (which are a subspecies) are smaller than other known blue whales and also differ in what significant way?

Answer: All of these.

The pygmy blue whale is found regularly in tropical waters, and is one of three identifiable subspecies of the blue whale. The northern blue whale and the southern blue whale are the two other known subspecies.
8. Does the blue whale create the loudest sustained noise of any animal on earth?

Answer: Yes

The call of the blue whale reaches levels up to 188 decibels, a jet engine reaches only about 140 decibels. Their extremely loud whistling cry can be heard for hundreds of miles under the waters. The sperm whale can create a louder noise, but only for microseconds.
9. Has the blue whale ever been observed making sounds so as to warn other whales of possible dangers?

Answer: No

Many interesting theories have been put forward to explain the beautiful calls of these gentle giants. However, no evidence has ever been shown that the blue whale can sense when it is in danger.
10. What sensory ability of the blue whale is thought to be very weak?

Answer: All of these

The blue whale has poor eyesight, this is understandable because the ocean depths are so murky. Blue whales are also thought not to have any sense of taste and smell; however, their sense of hearing and touch are considered excellent.
