Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am the smallest bird in the UK.

Answer: Goldcrest

Goldcrests are very small birds, averaging 9cm (3.5 inches) in size. They are recognizable by their size, and shock of bright yellow on their forehead.
2. I have blue, red/orange, black and white colouring if I'm male.

Answer: Chaffinch

Chaffinches generally feed from the ground and don't favour bird feeders. When they fly, the streaks of white in wing and tail feathers flash.
3. I am the most colourful member of the tit family.

Answer: Blue tit

This bird is one of the UK's favourite birds. It is recognizable by its colourful blue and yellow feathers.
4. I have a colourful breast and am rumoured to help Santa.

Answer: Robin

Robins are the UK's favourite bird, and not surprisingly. They bring a little burst of colour to winter months. They sing all year round and are extremely territorial.
5. I am an extremely colourful bird, with a red and white band on my head and a black, white and yellow body.

Answer: Goldfinch

Instantly recognizable by its colourful plumage, the goldfinch has a special beak that allows it to pry seeds from everywhere. Some birds migrate to Spain in the winter.
6. I am a very common bird, and man-made structures are my favourite place for nesting, which gives a clue to my name!

Answer: House sparrow

Its scientific name is Passer domesticus. Sparrows have a short chunky beak, good for cracking seeds open. True to its name, two thirds of them are found in urban settings.
7. I have a black tail and head, a grey back and white and black wings with a pinkish/red underside and chest.

Answer: Bullfinch

Bullfinches can live nearly anywhere, including forests, hedgerows and gardens, providing there are trees. They are quite rare and hard to find, with their call being very quiet.
8. I could be mistaken for a blackbird, but I have white speckles.

Answer: Starling

The starling's colours change as the seasons do. They go from white and black to purplish green and brown and white. They usually travel in large groups called 'murmurations'.
9. I am a bird with spotted plumage and flashes of red on my head and belly.

Answer: Great spotted woodpecker

The lesser spotted woodpecker and the great spotted woodpecker look virtually the same, except the lesser spotted variation doesn't have a burst of red on its belly. It flies as if it is 'bouncing'.
10. I am an extremely musical bird, and this is reflected in my name.

Answer: Song thrush

This thrush likes to sing while repeating musical phrases. It prefers to eat snails by smashing their shells against a stone by flicking their head.
