Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did Doberman pinschers originate?

Answer: Germany

Doberman Pinschers originated in Apolda, Germany. They were bred from many breeds and made into guard dogs.
2. Where did Dobermans get their name?

Answer: From the man who bred them

Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann founded Dobermans by breeding them from different breeds. The reason for this is he was a door to door tax collector and wanted to be safer while going door to door in bad neighborhoods. He saw the miniature pinscher, and wanted a bigger version to protect him. Thus, the Doberman pinscher was created.
3. Dobermans are known to experience all health problems except which of the following?

Answer: Patellar luxation

Although some dogs (such as Shih Tzus) are prone to patellar luxation, Doberman pinschers are not.
4. What were Dobermans trained to be?

Answer: Guard dogs

Doberman pinschers were trained to be schutzhunds, or guard dogs. They were also trained to be police dogs.
5. Do Dobermans naturally have erect ears and short tails?

Answer: No

Dobermans are born with floppy ears and long tails, but most Dobermans you see in the USA have cropped ears and docked tails.
6. Dobermans are ranked in the top ten dogs for intelligence.

Answer: True

Despite the fact that Dobermans are sometimes confused as the smartest dog in the world, their ranking can vary according to who ran the trials, some assessments ranking them third or fifth. Golden retrievers, German shepherds, poodles and Border collies are also highly intelligent.
7. Which of these dogs was included in the development of Doberman Pinschers?

Answer: Weimaraner

The dogs that it took to make the one and only Doberman are as follows: German pinscher, Rottweiler, Thuringian shepherd dog, black greyhound, great Dane, Weimaraner, German shorthaired pointer and German shepherd.
8. What does the word "pinscher" mean?

Answer: Terrier

Pinscher means terrier in German. When Mr. Dobermann died in 1894, the Doberman got its name "Doberman pinscher". Half a century later, pinscher was dropped in Germany, because they thought that the Doberman no longer needed the name terrier.
9. Which of these is NOT a real Pinscher?

Bull Pinschers do not exist. The only pinschers that exist are Doberman pinscher, miniature pinscher, Affenpinscher, German pinscher, Austrian pinscher, and Danish Swedish farmdog.
10. The initial breeder of Dobermans died in 1894. What year was the first Doberman registered with the AKC (American Kennel Club)?

Answer: 1908

The first ever Doberman Pinscher was registered with the American Kennel Club in 1908, 14 years after the death of Karl Dobermann. The USA also has the Doberman Pinscher Club of America which continues to champion the dog.
