Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Resembling a little puffball, the pomapoo is a hybrid dog breed created by crossing the poodle with other breed?

Answer: Pomeranian

Take the first three letters each from "Pomeranian" and "poodle", and place an "a" in-between, and you get "pomapoo". Bear in mind that these mixes (like Labradoodle, cockapoo, etc.), as lovable as they are, are not actually breeds. Nor are they really hybrids because they are all of the same species.

They are pedigreed but mixed-breed dogs; they are just like the doggie you found at the shelter except for the detailed family history and the expense.

2. What is the frightening nickname of osedax, a deep-sea worm that lives on whale carcasses?

Answer: Zombie worm

Discovered in 2002, 3000 meters deep off California on the decaying bone of a grey whale, osedax, which means "bone-eater" in Latin, is a small worm (2 to 7 cm). It digs through whale bones by secreting an acid from its skin that dissolves the bone so it can reach the lipids on which it feeds. Osedax lacks a mouth or stomach, so it digests the proteins and fats found within the bone with the help of bacteria.

3. Which venomous spider is easily identified by a red hour-glass-shaped marking on its abdomen?

Answer: Black Widow

The hour-glass markings appear on the female only. The species earned its name through the practice of the female devouring her male partner following mating.

4. Which of these animals was taken off the endangered list in 2007?

Answer: bald eagle

The United States symbol, the bald eagle was removed from the endangered species list on August 9, 2007, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. While in 1995 there were only 4500 known pairs of bald eagles in the U.S., that number increased to 7066 in 2006.

Question by player Billkozy
5. Which animal listed has especially good night vision?

Answer: cat

Domestic cats have special components and reflectors in their eyes which amplify available light to give them excellent night vision.

This adaptation also exists in tigers and leopards in the wild. It helps them to hunt at night.

6. Within the phylum Mollusca there is a very large class of animals known as Gastropoda. What slimy and slow animals make up the gastropod class that includes more than 65,000 species?

Answer: Snails and slugs

In 2017 there were 476 families within the Gastropoda class with an estimated 65,000 to 80,000 total species. These species include land snails and sea snails as well as land slugs and sea slugs. Snails are distinguished from slugs in that they have an external shell.

7. Which of the following is not a true statement about the platypus?

Answer: It climbs trees to avoid predators

The platypus is indeed an egg laying mammal along with the echidna. They are known as monotremes and are both found in Australia. The male has venomous spurs on its hind legs which can cause a very painful injury. They are a mostly aquatic animal and therefore can't climb trees.

8. What kind of animal does the word loggerhead call to mind?

Answer: turtle

Loggerheads are sea turtles that can grow as big as 800 lbs (about 363 kg). They have yellowy brown skin and their shells are reddish brown in colour. Those that survive into adulthood usually live for a long time, with some individuals living for almost 200 years.

9. Cows can see colors, except for a specific one. What color are cows not able to see?

Answer: red

Those big beautiful eyes enable these animals to have an almost 360 degree view of their world.

10. This one may seem hard to digest but what bodily feature is shared by the unlikely pair of a carp and a platypus?

Answer: they have no stomach

Researchers have theories but are not entirely sure why at some point in evolutionary history both species evolved the stomach out of their digestive systems. Not only that but in the case of the platypus (and its monotreme cousin the echidna) they lost the genetic sequencing to bring the stomach back in "short" time (geologically speaking) and their bodies would have to reinvent them from scratch should conditions ever make stomachs overwhelmingly advantageous for them again. Both the carp and platypus conduct digestion entirely in the intestines. Carp like all fish are cold blooded and though platypuses run a little bit cooler than most mammals, they still have internal temperature regulation which qualifies as warm blooded. Carp follow the normal fish diagram of fins and scales as compared to the mammalian feet and fur of the platypus.
