Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the average top speed a Greyhound can obtain for short distances?

Answer: 40 - 45mph

Greyhounds have been clocked running up to 45mph.
2. Once retired, do greyhounds require a lot of exercise?

Answer: No

Contrary to what many people believe, greyhounds are usually very laid back. They have spent their life in a kennel environment, being 'turned out' in a pen four times a day and running a race every fourth day. Other than those times out, they live their life in a 3' x 4' wire cage. They are used to laying around and that's what they usually do when adopted into a home.
3. Where did the greyhound originate?

Answer: Egypt

Among the most ancient breeds, the Greyhound can be seen in Egyptian tomb carvings dated back to 2751 BC. These carvings depict the dogs attacking deer, a prey it was well-adapted to hunt.
4. What is the average retiring age of a racing greyhound?

Answer: 2 - 4 years

They run their maiden race at 18 months and are usually retired by the age of five but most don't make it that long. Most greyhounds typically retire by 2-4 years of age.
5. What is the average life-expectancy of a greyhound?

Answer: 12 to 14 years

The normal life expectancy for a healthy greyhound is 12 to 14 years.
6. True or False Most greyhounds are grey?

Answer: False

False. In fact, the color grey is actually called blue. Most greyhounds are NOT blue. They do come in all sorts of other colors like fawn, black, white, brindle and parti-colored. Although the breed name 'Greyhound' seems to be a reference to color, its origin is not so simple.

Some attribute the name to a derivation of Graius or Grecian. Others trace it to the old British grech or greg, meaning dog and hundr, meaning hunting.
7. What is it called when a greyhound falls asleep with all four feet in the air?

Answer: Cockroaching

This hilarious sight is called cockroaching (due to the fact that when in this position they resemble a cockroach that is on its back)is a sign that the dog is feeling safe and content. The first time I saw one do this I thought the poor creature was dead.
8. What is the average age of a greyhound available for adoption in he US?

Answer: 3 years

The average age of an adoptable retired racer is 3 years, though sometimes rescue groups do get younger and older dogs.
9. In what famous book are greyhounds the only breed specifically mentioned?

Answer: The Bible

Believe it or not, greyhounds are the only breed of dogs mentioned in the bible. King James version, Proverbs 30:29 - 31
10. Is it possible for retired racing greyhounds to live peacefully in homes with cats, birds and other small animals?

Answer: Yes

Yes, not for all of them but for most of them. When greyhound rescues recieve the dog they test them to see if they are 'cat safe'. (To learn more about retired racers go to WWW.Gemgreyhounds.org there are links to find an agency in your own state or country.)
