Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Moose
Answer: Eddie Crane; "Frasier"
Moose portrayed Eddie the Parson Russell terrier for over 8 years. As he aged he shared this duty with his lookalike son Enzo who acted as his stunt double and eventually took over the role. With the aid of oil and pate, he would lick and nuzzle his two-legged co-stars but his greatest achievement was the ability to fix Kelsey Grammer with a steely stare.
Not bad for a dog who was given away because his original owners thought he was unmanageable.
2. Manis
Answer: Clyde; "Every Which Way But Loose"
Manis was the first orangutan to portray Clint Eastwood's sidekick Clyde in the original film. The sequel "Any Which Way You Can" featured another orangutan as Manis had grown too big for the role.
3. Bamboo Harvester
Answer: "Mr Ed"
A palomino gelding, Bamboo Harvester portrayed Mr Ed for the entire six seasons of the show. While Mr Ed could talk, Bamboo Harvester could not, and his voice was provided by Allan Lane. It was initially reported that peanut butter was smeared on his gums to make him simulate talking but this was disputed by Alan Young, the human star of the show, who maintained that nylon thread was used to train him to move his lips when his trainer touched his hoof or when the actors stopped talking.
4. Keiko
Answer: Willy; "Free Willy"
Keiko was captured, as a young orca in 1979 near Iceland. He was sold to a series of aquariums before ending up in an amusement park in Mexico where he performed for the public. Because of the publicity of his movie roles a fund was set up to bring him back to health and eventually return him to the wild.
This was only a partial success as Keiko never fully integrated with wild orca. He died in a bay in Norway in 2003 of pneumonia.
5. Bruno
Answer: "Gentle Ben"
Bruno, an American black bear received a PATSY award (Picture Animal Top Star of the Year) for his role as Gentle Ben in the film "Gentle Giant". He also starred in the TV show based on the film and made appearances in a number of other shows including "Daktari" and "Gunsmoke".
6. Orangey
Answer: Cat, "Breakfast at Tiffany's"
Orangey, a male marmalade tabby, was a temperamental performer known for biting and scratching his co-stars. However, he is the only cat to receive two PATSYs.
7. Molly
Answer: "Francis the Talking Mule"
Molly, as Francis, was the first recipient of the PATSY Award. She was chosen to play the decidedly male Francis (voiced by Chill Wills), because she was easy to handle. She was trained to simulate talking by the same man who went to train Mr Ed, using similar techniques.
8. Crystal
Answer: Dexter, "Night at the Museum"
Crystal, the capuchin monkey, has an impressive list of film credits, appearing in dozens of movies and TV shows, including "The Hangover II", "American Pie" and "We Bought a Zoo". She was the cigarette-addicted monkey in "The Big Bang Theory". As Dexter in the "Night at the Museum" franchise she went off-script to defecate on Robin Williams.
9. Jimmy
Answer: Crow, "The Wizard of Oz"
Jimmy the raven was an extremely prolific animal actor, appearing in over 1000 films during the 1930s, 40s and 50s. Highly intelligent, Jimmy could understand several hundred words and performed many tricks such as typing and riding a miniature motorcycle.
He first appeared in the 1938 film "You Can't Take It With You". Director Frank Capra was so impressed he had Jimmy appear in every subsequent film he made.
10. Pal
Answer: "Lassie Come Home"
Probably the most famous of all animal actors, Pal was not the first choice to play Lassie in the low budget children's film "Lassie Come Home". A prize winning female rough collie initially began filming but baulked at entering flood waters for an action shot. Pal, as stunt double, performed so movingly in the scene, he was hired to complete the film and all previous footage was reshot with him as the star.
He went on to make 6 more "Lassie" films and two pilots for a TV series, which eventually starred his son Lassie Junior.
He died peacefully of natural causes at about 18 years of age.
