Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. No bucking now! What aquarium novelty is less than 2 centimeters as a pygmy animal?

Answer: Seahorse

The pgymy seahorse attaches itself to coral and only briefly detaches. While attached to the coral it is barely distinguishable from the coral itself.
The smallest pygmy seahorse, "Hippocampus satomiae" was described in the journal "Zootaxa" in 2008. This seahorse can be found in the Derawan Islands off Kalimantan. It was named for the diver who found it, Ms. Satomi Onishi. This species of pygmy seahorse grows to about 13.8 mm or 0.54 inch.
2. What pygmy version of a video game animal may require a permit in some U.S. states because it may carry "hoof and mouth" disease?

Answer: Hedgehog

"Hoof and mouth" disease is an infectious viral disease that can at times be fatal. The disease manifests itself in high fever and blisters in the mouth and feet that can rupture and cause lameness. Affected animals are usually cattle, sheep, deer, buffalo, goats any cloven hooves as well as elephants and hedgehogs. The disease is such a threat to animals of an infected area because it can be spread through aerosols, machinery, clothing, being transported by wildlife and other means. The United Syates banned the import of Hedgehogs in 1991.

Pet hedgehogs became the rage in the 1980s even with their idiosyncrasies. They're lactose intolerant, get stressed out, have "wobbly hedgehog syndrome," and can also get pneumonia and cancer. They can't eat nuts, you shouldn't use cedar in their cages or as bedding, and they need that wheel for exercise to avoid liver problems and excessive weight gain. The pygmy hedgehog is small enough to fit inside an egg cup.
3. What New World monkey is called the "Finger Monkey" because of its pygmy size?

Answer: Marmoset

The pygmy marmoset is the smallest true monkey. Its size including nearly 8 inch tail is about 12 - 13 inches. The pygmy marmoset can be found largely in western South America.
4. What pygmy animal just won't give a hoot if you sneak up on it because it probably heard you and saw you coming?

Answer: Owl

Pygmy Owls are often called owlets. There are between 26 and 35 species of pygmy owls found primarily in the Americas. Pygmy owls grow to about 6 inces in length. An even smaller owl is the Elf Owl at 4.5 to 5.5 inches.
5. What whiskered pygmy displays a pair of can't miss huge ears and sounds like a champagne bottle size?

Answer: Jerboa

The Pygmy Jerboa is of commonly bred, but in its element can be found in countries from northern Africa to Asia to northern China. Jerboas are in their element in deserts and can run up to 15 miles per hour. This creature is sort of the rodent version of the platypus with its long bird-like legs, kangaroo hopping ability and huge jackrabbit ears.
The champagne bottle size is a jeroboam.
6. The pygmy mouse lemur is also known as the dormouse lemur.

Answer: True

The pygmy mouse lemur is also known as Peter's mouse lemur, and Western Rufous Lemur. This animal which was noted in 1852 was rediscovered in 1993 living in western Madagascar's Kirindy forest. It is the smallest primate in the world. The body and tail of this lemur combine for nearly eight inches and it weighs a mere 1.1 ounce.
7. Many species of this pygmy fish can be found in Australian waters. Which tiny toughie looks like a colorful cross between a pot-bellied pig and a sole?

Answer: Leatherjacket

The Leatherjacket group of fish are all cute marine specimens, but the pygmy leatherjacket is adorably cute. There are nearly 90 species of the fish and more than 50 can be found in the waters of Australia and Tasmania. They grow to about 9 cm. The fish often attach themselves by the mouth to seaweed or sea grass when they sleep.

Their color ranges from pale yellow-brown to dark green with small spots and affords them great camouflage.
8. Which lazy pygmy animal is lovingly called "nature's brother-in-law"?

Answer: Three-toed Sloth

The pygmy three-toed sloth has been recognized as a species since 2001. If you want to see them in the wild you'll need to visit the mangrove forests of Isla Escudo de Veraguas off the coast of Panama. While the regular sloths grow to be 50 to 60 cm the pygmy three-toed grows to between 485 - 530 mm and weighs in at 2.5 - 3.5 kg. The sexes are distinguished by an orange circular patch with a black vertical band running through it on the backs of males.

The sloth which is Anderson Cooper's favorite animal is so slow algae grows in its fur. Top speed for a sloth garners it about 6 feet per minute. The name sloth suggest laziness, and sloths in zoos may sleep up to 20 hours a day. However, in the wild they sleep only half that time. The sloth's arms are so long and their hind legs so short they drag themselves on their elbows when on the ground. The sloth seldom comes down from the trees; in fact they have such a strong grip they often die and are found still hanging onto a branch.

Unlike the two-toed sloth (the terms three-toed and two-toed refers to the arm claws only. All sloth have three hind claws) three-toed sloths have up to three extra neck vertebrae which allow them to rotate their head up to 270 degrees horizontally.
9. The 30th President of the USA, Calvin Coolidge, received a pygmy hippopotamus as a gift.

Answer: True

Pygmy hippos are less water friendly than their huge relatives. They can be found in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone as well as the Ivory Coast. Unlike their huge namesakes pygmy hippos prefer dense underbrush to water. While a fully grown male hippo can weigh in at 3,600 kilograms a pygmy tips the scales at only 250 kilograms.

In 1927 Harvey Firestone made a gift of a pygmy hippo named "Billy" to President Calvin Coolidge. Billy was captured in Liberia on a Firestone Tires plantation. Harvey Firestone knowing of the president's growing menagarie presented the 600 lb. fully grown pygmy hippo to President Coolidge. Billy was housed at the Smithstonian National Zoological Park for most of his life; he died in 1955. Nearly all pygmy hippos in zoos in the United States owe their ancestry to Billy the pygmy hippo. If you look at a Liberian silver dollar issued in 1994 you'll notice a pygmy hippo depicted.
10. What hands high pygmy animal is sometimes used as a guide for the blind.

Answer: Horse

Pygmy horses and Shetland ponies are not the same. While Shetlands stand about 10.2 hands (a hand is 4 inches in height) high, the smallest pygmy horse measured about 14 inches and weighed only 20 pounds. However, Guinness World Records lists a miniature named Black Beauty as the smallest miniature horse. Black Beauty stood 18.5 inches high.

In 1999 the Guide Horse Foundation was established in the USA to provide an alternative for the visually handicapped living in rural areas. Horses considered for the program must be no higher than 26 inches at the withers. They must also meet other criteria and standards. There are advantages and disadvantages to having a guide horse. While some blind people may have a fear of dogs they could easily adapt to a horse.
