Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following primates IS a great ape?

Answer: Bonobo

Bonobos are similar to chimpanzees in appearance and intelligence. They are found only in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They are peaceful and sexual creatures, as opposed to their sometimes-violent chimpanzee cousins.

Mandrills are simians (monkeys) with colorful faces and buttocks. They were once thought to be a species of baboon.

Gibbons and tarsiers are known as "lesser apes" and can be found in Asia. After humans, gibbons are the most bipedal primates, spending approximately twelve percent of their time on two legs.
2. Some great apes have been taught to communicate effectively with humans. How do these apes "speak"?

Answer: Through sign language.

Washoe the chimpanzee was the first non-human to learn to communicate with humans through a form of language. Later, Koko the lowland gorilla's capabilities for language were even more shocking: "Koko has a working vocabulary of over 1,000 signs... [and] understands approximately 2,000 words of spoken English" (www.koko.org). Additionally, her human IQ has been tested to be between 70 and 95.

3. Which is the only great ape to live in Asia?

Answer: Orangutan

Orangutans are found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Macaques, although they live in Japan, are monkeys.
4. Wild chimpanzees' favorite meat is:

Answer: Colobus monkey

Chimps have a taste for small primates. They have been known to prey on young baboons, and even the occasional unguarded human child.
5. What is the endangerment status of Sumatran orangutans?

Answer: Critically endangered

Western gorillas are also critically endangered. Bornean orangutans are endangered and are approaching the "critically endangered" status.
6. Which of the following is not a species of gorilla?

Answer: Northern lowland gorilla

Besides those listed, other species of gorilla include the western lowland gorilla, the western gorilla, and the eastern gorilla.
7. Which great ape is the most arboreal?

Answer: Orangutan

Orangutans are the largest living arboreal ("tree dwelling") animals.
8. How might a gorilla's diet be (primarily) described?

Answer: Herbivorous

Contrary to commonly-held beliefs just a few decades ago, a gorilla is not a predator--in fact, it is the only mainly herbivorous great ape. Gorillas have been to eat termites and ants, but they mostly eat leaves and fruit with only around 2% being ants and similar animals.
9. What are the pads on an adult male orangutan's face called?

Answer: Flanges

Some adult males will not develop flanges but remain in a state of arrested adolescence. While it was once thought that these pseudo-juveniles were not sexually mature, it is now known that they father around one half of newborn orangutans.
10. This scientist was one of the first to study gorillas in the Congo. He/she was murdered by locals in her cabin while in the area conducting research.

Answer: Dian Fossey

Fossey's life and works were the inspiration for "Gorillas in the Mist".
