Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Brown fur seals are also known as?

Answer: South African fur seals

The South African fur seal is a member of the Otariidae family; they live and breed off the coast of Africa. Like most seals they live mainly on fish, cephalopods and crustaceans.
2. Which of the following seals only inhabits fresh water?

Answer: Baikal seal

The Baikal seal is named after Siberia's largest fresh water lake, Baikal. According to DK Visual Encyclopedia of Animals: "there are about 70,000 seals living in the lake." The Baikal seals feed on fish and usually weigh 115-330 lbs.
3. The Japanese sea lion is an extinct species.

Answer: Yes

The Japanese sea lion became extinct in the 1950s. They appeared to have had a bad taste, but were still hunted to extinction for their oil which was used for lamps.

"Valuable oil was extracted from the skin, its internal organs were used to make expensive oriental medicine, and its whiskers and leathers were used as pipe cleaners and leather goods, respectively. At the turn of the 20th century, they were captured for use in circuses."

4. To which family do bearded seals belong?

Answer: Phocidae

Bearded seals belong to the family Phocidae. Bearded seals often fall prey to the polar bear. The fat content of the bearded seal is approximately 30-40%. Like monk seals, they have four milk-producing nipples which is beneficial for a strong, healthy pup.
5. Do walruses molt(shed)?

Answer: Yes

Walruses are a hair-shedding species. The male walruses usually molt between June and August. The females molt for a slightly longer period.
6. How do harbor seals communicate among each other?

Answer: All of these

Harbor seals have many signs of communication, but are considered to be the "least vocal of the pinnipeds." Harbor seals will usually snort and even sneeze to show who is dominant or to scare off predators. The pups usually make "sheep-like cries" to attract their mother's attention. These are often a sign that it's time for feeding.

7. What is the IUCN conservation status of the Ross seal?

Answer: Vulnerable

The Ross seal was named after British explorer, Sir James Clark Ross. Ross seals often fall prey to killer whales and leopard seals.
8. Which of the following species of seal are considered the most aggressive?

Answer: Leopard seals

One of the most deadly predators living in the Antarctic, Leopard seals are usually found snoozing on the hard ice packs. They have a blood-thirsty appetite for penguins and are also known to eat other seals. Leopard seal attacks on humans are extremely rare, with only one recorded death since 2003.
9. Which island is the breeding grounds for the Galápagos sea lion?

Answer: Galápagos Islands

The Galápagos Islands are home to a wide range of species including Galápagos penguins, pelicans, marine iguanas, seal lions and the Galápagos tortoise.
10. Which of the following places has a controversial annual seal hunt?

Answer: Canada

The seal hunts occur in 5 different countries - Canada, Russia, Norway, Namibia and Greenland. The seal clubbers are given a quota each year of how many seals they are allowed to club. It is usually around 300,000. The seals are just pups who mainly cannot even swim yet, let alone have any chance of escaping. They are clubbed on their heads, many times, and when they are skinned, many of them are still conscious.

This particular event is a very controversial subject due to claims that seal clubbing is an important source of income to families and a necessity for an 'attractive' fur coat. Go to PETA.org for pictures and videos.
