Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Able to pull more than a thousand times its own bodyweight, which is the world's strongest insect?

Answer: Dung beetle

The horned dung beetle, Onthophagus taurus, is the world's strongest insect. It can pull 1,141 times its own bodyweight. A 70kg man lifting six full double decker buses would be the equivalent.
2. This insect is able to leap two feet in the air, the human equivalent of jumping over the St. Louis Gateway Arch. Which insect is the highest jumper in the world?

Answer: Froghopper

I assumed the flea was the highest jumping insect. While a flea can jump 18 cm into the air and 33 cm along, the froghopper can jump twice as high. Froghoppers are of the family Hemiptera, which include such species as cicadas, aphids and shield bugs.
3. Known to traverse the ocean and fly from Africa to India, which insect flies the greatest distances?

Answer: Dragonflies

Dragonflies belong to the order of Odonata. They are found on every continent except Antarctica. They are able to fly in six directions; up, down, left, right, backwards and forwards. They are able to cross oceans, their movements assisted by winds.
4. The queen of which group of insects has the longest lifespan of any insect in the world, living to an average of fifty years?

Answer: Termites

Termite queens are large, up to a hundred times larger than the workers. They lay up to 40,000 eggs per day and up to 165 million in their lifetime. Under ideal conditions and provided they are well cared for by workers, termite queens can live for as much as fifty years.
5. Which insect generates sounds at an average of 108.9 decibels, the equivalent of a live rock concert?

Answer: Cicada

Cicadas are insects in the order Hemiptera, The name cicada is derived directly from the Latin meaning "tree cricket". The sound made by the cicada is not as a result of stridulation as is found in grasshoppers, but instead they use parts of their exoskeleton called tymbals to cause vibrations which are amplified by a mostly hollow abdomen.
6. Which insect has the most toxic venom in the world?

Answer: Maricopa harvester ant

Pogonomyrmex maricopa, or Maricopa harvester ant is found in Arizona, but is also known through many southern states and northern parts of Mexico. It's venom is thought to be the most toxic in the world. Honey bee venom has only 1/20th the potency. While the venom will not likely kill a human being, a pheromone is released which attracts other ants in the area and they in turn join the attack.

These ants bite on to their victim with their mandibles and repeatedly sting, releasing venom.
7. Flying at over 145 km/h, faster than the average cheetah, which insect is the fastest recorded flying insect on earth?

Answer: Horsefly

Horseflies are flies from the family Tabanidae. Male horseflies feed on nectar and female horseflies bite animals in order to feed on blood in order to get protein for laying eggs. Horseflies fly faster than many breeds of birds and leave cheetahs in the dust at 110 km/h - 120 km/h.
8. Two of the most bioluminescent insects in the world are the Firefly and Headlight Elater. What do they have in common?

Answer: Both are beetles

The headlight elater, is a click beetle (family Elateridae) while the firefly is a winged beetle (family Lampyridae). Headlight elaters have two luminescent light organs on their prothorax. These lights glow constantly and do not flash. The firefly, uses different flashing patterns from the light in their abdomen to attract mates.
9. The smallest known insect in the world is a parasitic wasp from the family Mymaridae. What is the common name for insects of this family?

Answer: Fairyflies

Fairyflies are also known as fairy wasps. The world's smallest insect falls within this family group and measures approximately 0.139 mm (0.0055 in). In particular is the male from of the species Dicopomorpha echmepterygis which is also blind and wingless.
10. The tiger beetle is the fastest running insect in the world. They can cover 120 times their own body length per second. What happens to these insects due to the speed they run at?

Answer: They go temporarily blind

Technically speaking a mite (Paratarsotomus macropalpis) is the fastest running animal in the world, but it is classed as an arachnid. So the tiger beetle is the fastest insect. The tiger beetle runs so fast, that its eyes are unable to gather enough light to form an image of its prey. While chasing, it will stop suddenly in order to catch sight of its prey before resuming the chase.
