The Eastern Bluebird Trivia Quiz

A short quiz on these shy, cheerful little birds and their nesting habits. If you've monitored a bluebird trail or know a lot about birds in general, my quiz should be relatively easy. If you're the average person, however, you'll probably learn a lot!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the scientific name for the Eastern bluebird?

Answer: Sialia sialis

All bluebirds belong to the thrush family, then each species has its own title. Sialia currucoides, the mountain bluebird; Sialia mexicana, the Western bluebird; and Sialia sialis, the Eastern bluebird.
2. Bluebirds live mainly on a diet of what?

Answer: Bugs

Approximately 70% of a bluebird's diet is invertebrates, but small berries (such as flowering dogwood, Eastern red cedar, holly, and pokeweed) are an important part of their diet in the late summer and winter.
3. Do bluebirds particularly like to live in deciduous forests?

Answer: No

Bluebirds like fields edged with trees because they can hunt bugs in the fields, but still have the shelter of the wood when their babies fledge. Lots of bluebird trails are placed near historic farmhouses and golf courses, so keep an eye out next time you go putting.
4. Does a bluebird's range extend into Canada in some areas?

Answer: Yes

Bluebirds breed up into the southern part of Canada.
5. Which of these species will nest peacefully near bluebirds?

Answer: Tree swallows

Bluebirds are not very bold or territorial, but they will not usually nest within a certain range of other birds. With the tree swallow, however, they will allow them to nest in a box right next to theirs. European starlings and house sparrows will take over bluebird's nests and even kill adults and babies. Wrens will chase bluebirds out of a box, and sometimes poke holes in their eggs, but aren't usually as aggressive.
6. Besides nesting boxes, bluebirds' nests can sometimes be found in wooden fence posts and hollow trees.

Answer: True

Bluebirds are cavity nesters. Before nest boxes came into use, they nested in woodpecker holes in both fence posts and trees. Due to alien bird species (which trail monitors will throw out) taking over their nesting places, and wooden fence posts being replaced with metal, most bluebirds now nest in monitored boxes.
7. What color, besides the usual blue, can bluebird's eggs also appear as?

Answer: White

Approximately 7% of bluebirds' eggs are white. Color variations have nothing to do the color of the fledglings. Females who lay white on their first brood eggs will generally only lay white eggs. This color variation can appear in all three bluebird species' eggs.
8. Do female and male bluebirds have the same bright blue coloring on their backs?

Answer: No

As with most species, female bluebirds are duller then the males so that they are less obvious to predators. On Eastern bluebirds, the females are a bluish gray instead of the vibrant plumage of the males that we often see in pictures.
9. Both parents incubate the eggs about an equal amount.

Answer: False

The female bluebird is the main incubator of the eggs.
10. Bluebirds only have one brood of nestlings each season.

Answer: False

Bluebirds generally have two broods of nestlings a year, but sometimes they have three.
