Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On which continent is the slow loris found?

Answer: Asia

The slow loris can be found in various Asian countries including India, Bangladesh and China. There are a selection of different species including the Bornean slow loris, the pygmy slow loris and the Sunda slow loris.
2. How did the slow loris get its name?

Answer: They move slowly

The slow loris was named due to its speed. Rather than jumping through the trees like their close relatives the lemurs, the slow loris prefers to move slowly and carefully.
3. What does the slow loris use as a form of defence?

Answer: poison

When threatened, the slow loris will lick the scent glands on its arms, which produce a mild poison, before biting its tormentor.

Females have also been known to cover the fur of their young with this poison.
4. Apart from humans, which of the following animals is known to prey on the slow loris?

Answer: orang-utans

Animals known to prey on the slow loris include orang-utans, eagles, sun bears, snakes, cats and hawks.
5. In which year was the slow loris first officially described to science?

Answer: 1785

In 1785, Dutchman Pieter Boddaert described the first known species, the Sunda slow loris.
6. The slow loris is diurnal.

Answer: False

Diurnal animals are most active during the day. The slow loris, however, is nocturnal, meaning it's most active at night. It feeds on insects, lizards and small birds but will also eat eggs and fruit.
7. What's so unusual about how the slow loris breeds?

Answer: They mate while hanging upside-down

Breeding is continuous throughout the year and mating usually occurs while hanging upside-down in a tree. After approximately 197 days, females give birth to either one or two babies.
8. The slow loris is listed as being an endangered species.

Answer: True

It's not just habitat destruction that's put them on the 'Endangered' list. They are also popular as exotic pets.
9. What colour is the fur of the slow loris?

Answer: it depends on the species

The fur colours range from grey to dark red.
10. The slow loris has a long monkey-like tail.

Answer: False

Rather than having long tails like monkeys and lemurs, the tail of the slow loris is very short, measuring about two centimetres.
