When the Dog Bites Trivia Quiz

While I've never had a dog of my own, I often sit for them when their humans go away on vacation or for work. I've come to recognize that they are individuals even within breeds, although breeds have certain characteristics. I hope you enjoy this quiz.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I sit for two dogs that are taupe or gray in color, with light amber eyes and a very loud bark. They were originally used as gun dogs, hunting both large and small game in Germany. What type of dogs are these?

Answer: Weimaraners

Weimaraners are beautiful but are not for the timid owner. They require firm training and a lot of exercise to be a relaxed and affectionate companion dog.

Border Collies are small, black and white herding dogs from the UK.

German Shepherds are also large working dogs, favorites in the USA.

Chihuahuas are tiny Mexican dogs.
2. The next dog was bred originally in the UK for fighting other larger animals, hence the pushed out jaw line, blocky build and pushed in nose. On which ungainly looking, waddling breed is there not much fur to groom?

Answer: English Bulldog

English Bulldogs can thrive in apartment dwellings despite their large size and are wonderful with children, too. They can suffer from hip dysplasia among many other conditions. Their small eyes can sometimes have inverted eyelashes.

Chihuahuas are small dogs from Mexico. They are not always good with children.

Weimaraners originated in Germany.

American pitbulls are a bull baiting dog that later became first a farm dog and then a companion animal.
3. According to the World Atlas web site of March 20, 2017, which of the following dog breeds has the strongest bite force? This question is not about frequency of biting incidents, only about the pounds per inch of the breed's bite force.

Answer: Kangal

The Kangal has a bite force of 743 psi. There are a few web sites that suggest that the English Mastiff has the greatest bite force but PetComments.com confirms the Kangal as the winner of the bite force challenge.

Rottweilers come in at 328 psi.

English Mastiffs, while very gentle, could do damage with a bite force of 556 psi.

The American Bulldog is the least forceful of these four, though no slouch, at 305 psi.
4. Pet WebMD suggests that you can train your puppy not to nip or bite by yelping like other puppies do when bitten, among other things. What is something they do NOT suggest for training your puppy not to bite?

Answer: Smacking him on the nose with a newspaper

WebMD's pet site's article "How to Train a Puppy That Bites" offers all of these suggestions apart from smacking the puppy. American Kennel Club's on-line article "How to Prevent a Puppy From Biting", Oct. 26, 2015 also suggests yelping when puppy bites too hard. That surprised me, but both articles explained that puppies teach each other bite inhibition by yelping when hurt. All play stops then for a short while.
5. American Kennel Club standards require some breeds' owners to dock their show dogs' tails. In which of the breeds below do they not require docking (removal of a portion of the tail, surgically)?

Answer: Border Collie

This is a very controversial practice. Some countries have banned docking the tail altogether. The American Kennel Club's standards for show dogs ensures that docking will continue here in the United States. It is a barbaric practice which has no current use.
6. What does a dog squatting to urinate tell the observer?

Answer: Nothing except that the dog likes to squat to pee.

Some male dogs lift their legs to pee, usually as a "Marvin was here" announcement to other dogs. Some male dogs squat most or all of the time when they urinate. Sometimes female dogs lift their legs to mark when they pee. So how a dog situates itself to urinate is a matter of choice or intention for it.
7. There is disagreement among scientists about when and where dogs were domesticated, but what is the generally accepted number of years considered for dogs' domestication?

Answer: There isn't an agreed date

Reading from "National Geographic" January 10, 2013 article "People and Dogs: A Genetic Love Story" the author Virginia Hughes postulates a probable 10,000 year domestication start. "Breedingbusiness.com" acknowledges that the issue is murky because mitochondrial DNA tells us that the first dogs diverged from gray wolves close to 27,000 years ago. Nuclear DNA shows an 11,000 to 16,000 year span start time. Recently some scientists postulate that 30,000 years may be closer to the truth per the "Atlantic Magazine", July 2014.
8. Most dogs are better able to withstand cold weather than hot.

Answer: True

All dogs have a higher metabolism rate than humans. This creates a great deal of body heat that is trapped inside the fur. Huskys essentially wear blankets of fur to protect them against the extreme cold of the Arctic. Only dogs with very short fur, such as boxers and Weimaraners are troubled by the cold. They also cannot bear hot weather.
9. What sense do dogs have that is 10000% keener than in humans?

Answer: Smell

A dog's olfactory portion of the brain is actually 40% larger than in human.

"Psychology Today" Canine Corner of September 6, 2010 states that a dog's visual acuity is only 20/75. He cannot recognize differences in patterns at 20 feet that humans can recognise at 75 feet.

Hearing is another matter, per Service Dog Central. http://servicedogcentral.org/content/node/435. Dogs can hear sounds at 80 feet that we hear at 20 feet from the source.

Back to the Canine Corner of "Psychology Today" April 19, 2011. Stanley Coren, author of "How Good is Your Dog's Sense of Taste", says that we win this contest, having 9000 taste buds to a dog's 1700 approximately.
10. Which of these physical characteristics do dogs and cats share?

Answer: A third translucent eyelid

Both dogs and cats have nictating membranes or third eyelids.
While some dogs and cats have blue eyes, that is a mutation and not the norm.
Neither dogs nor cats have striped skin under all coats.
Dogs usually do want to please their owners. Cats will do what pleases cats.
