Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following animals has a prehensile tail?

Answer: Spider monkey

Spider monkeys use their prehensile tails to swing through trees effectively. Their tail looks like an extra limb, therefore it is called the spider monkey. The Alsatian's tail is not prehensile. Mountain gorillas and tiger beetles do not have tails.
2. Which is the fastest animal on Earth?

Answer: Peregrine falcon

Peregrine falcons are extremely fast, and can reach speeds of 200 mph when diving for prey.
3. Which of the following is the scientific name of an elf owl?

Answer: Micrathene whitneyi

The elf owl is the smallest owl in the world by weight. Speotyto cunicularia is the scientific name of the burrowing owl, an owl which digs burrows using its long legs. Tyto tenebricosa is the scientific name of the greater sooty owl, which is part of the family Tytonidae, therefore having a heart-shaped face. Elfius owlus is not a real scientific name.
4. What is the main diet of a Tibetan fox?

Answer: Pikas

Pikas are small rodents who are very wary and usually difficult to catch. The square-faced Tibetan fox, also known as the Tibetan sand fox, uses stealth to sneak up on pikas and grab them.
5. Which of the following amphibians use the rain forest bromeliads to lay their eggs in, climbing giant trees to reach the aerial plants?

Answer: Poison-arrow frog

The journey up the tree may take days for the female poison-arrow frog, and she deposits her tadpoles each in a small pool of water. The tadpoles feed on insect-larvae and algae, even unfertilized eggs that the mother takes to them!
6. Which of the following animals can row themselves along water with their long legs?

Answer: Pond skater

An average pond skater is 20mm long, and so light it can balance itself on the water. It creates little dimples on the surface!
7. Which of the following fish is a professional sharp-shooter, with water?

Answer: Archer fish

The archer fish can shoot water out of its mouth usually 2 meters high to knock flies and other small insects into the water for its lunch. The tongue and mouth of the archer fish is just like a gun; it shoots water at high speeds out of the fish's gullet and into the air. An adult fish can shoot water up to 5 meters through the air!
8. What are the young of eels called?

Answer: Elvers

An average adult eel is about 1 meter long, and baby elvers are only about 6 cm when they reach the coast. The elvers are transparent and quite flat. Eels die soon after they lay their eggs.
9. Which of the following amphibians does not really grow up?

Answer: Axolotl

The axolotl retains its tadpole-like look all its life, but can still reproduce and lay eggs in the water. They can grow up to 15 cm long, and their diet is small fish and water-dwelling animals.
10. What qualities do red deer females, or does, look for in stags during the mating season? (Both answers must be correct!)

Answer: Large antlers, deep voice

A dominant stag will stay with his harem and will mate with every single female, although some younger and smaller males will try and sneak in to mate with some females before the dominant male notices them. If the does see or hear a bigger and more impressive stag with a deeper voice, then they will leave the current dominant stag and go and mate with him.

A stag must keep his harem with him at all costs!
