Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A favourite brain teaser clue with many people is the simple anagram, which can always be found in cryptic crosswords. However, compilers usually attempt to camouflage these clues with strategically placed anagram indicators, and this adds to the satisfaction of solving them. In the following clue the letters forming the anagram are shown in capitals which should give you a head start in finding this eggy treat named after a European country! HOMELESS PATIENT cooked a savoury egg dish.

Answer: Spanish omelette

The anagram indicator in this clue is the word 'cooked' which not only suggests that the letters of 'HOMELESS PATIENT' are to be restructured but also fit into the theme of the clue.

A Spanish omelette is simply a dish consisting of a basic egg omelette but with added potatoes. It is usually called tortilla de patatas in Spain.

The potatoes should be thinly sliced and then fried in olive oil, together with similarly sliced onions, and cooked until soft. Once they are soft, they should then be removed and added to raw eggs. The whole mixture is beaten and then returned to the pan to be lightly fried on both sides. At this stage other ingredients such as red peppers or other vegetables may be added if desired. The finished dish can then be eaten either hot or cold as preferred.

2. Find a type of cooked egg in the anagram highlighted in block capitals in the following sentence. Jenny found tasty fresh peas in EACH POD.

Answer: Poached

Poached eggs are simple to make (even without an egg poacher). Break egg gently into a saucer and slide into simmering water. Cook as desired. Place on hot buttered toast or use for Eggs Benedict.

3. Drop a letter from one of the following words and 'un-scramble' the remaining letters to reveal a five-letter word that denotes a common way in which eggs are cooked.

Answer: Finder

Remove the letter N from 'finder', anagram the remaining letters to get 'fried'.

Eggs can be fried various ways, i.e., sunny side up, over easy, over medium or (you guessed it) over hard. Hope this one was not 'over hard' and you got it right!

4. An exasperated chicken farm widow wants to teach her three ne'er-do-well sons--Abner, Bill, and Chuck--to think. She puts TWO BROWN eggs and THREE WHITE eggs in a basket. Then she furtively balances one on the crown of each of their hats. Each boy can see the other two brothers' eggs but not his own. If any can guess his own egg color, Mom will feed him supper, while the other two go to bed hungry. They look at each other in silence a long time. Suddenly Abner announces, correctly, that his egg is which color?

Answer: White

Abner thinks to himself, "Suppose I sport a brown egg?"
* If Bill also dons a brown egg, Chuck could immediately deduce his egg is white as there were only two brown eggs in the basket, and he would speak up.
* On the other hand, if Bill has a white egg, then Chuck couldn't guess his own color. But Bill could then deduce from Abner's brown egg and Chuck's silence that his mother gave him a white egg.

"But both Bill and Chuck are silent," he thinks. "So this isn't right."

"Now suppose," thinks Abner, "I've got a white egg."
* Chuck would see Abner's white egg, and then either a brown or another white egg on Bill, so he couldn't tell what his egg is.
* Likewise, Bill could see Abner's white egg, then either brown or white on Chuck, and couldn't draw any conclusions.

"They're both quiet, so I must have a white egg!" thinks Abner. And he says so!

And he gets his supper, a three-egg omelette!

This is variant of the old prisoners-with-black-or-white-hats riddle.

5. Find the hidden word in the following sentence which describes the way in which an egg can be cooked. Motorcycle road racer Bernard Codd led the the way for three laps in the Junior (350cc) race.

Answer: Coddled

The word CODDLED is hidden in the sentence: Motorcycle road racer Bernard CODD LED the the way for three laps in the Junior (350cc) race.

One method of making coddled eggs is to crack open the egg in a small buttered dish or ramekin. This is then placed in a bain-marie (water bath) and baked in the oven until soft.

6. Follow the clues below. Start with a three letter word. Add a letter and scramble to get a four letter word, then add another letter and scramble to get a final five letter word. Your answer should be all three words. Got that? Here are your clues: (1) Punch (3 letters) (2) Accompanying (4 letters) (3) Part of an egg (5 letters)

Answer: Hit with white

The white of a chicken egg is about two thirds of its weight (without the shell) and about 92% of that is water. The white of an egg is high in protein and low in fat, containing no cholesterol. Egg whites can be separated from the yolk and used on their own in several dishes such as meringue, macaroons and royal icing/frosting. Egg white was also used to produce the first photographic print, its function being to bind the chemicals to the paper.

7. The missing name that ties these famous people together is also a popular egg dish. DIRK _____ ARNOLD

Answer: BENEDICT

8. Here's a Wordwise for you to figure out: Gges Gesg Esgg Egsg Gegs Sgge Segg Sgeg

Answer: Scrambled Eggs

Scrambled eggs are nice and easy to make for terrible cooks. Just beat up a couple of eggs with a bit of milk, salt, pepper. Before putting into a warmed and buttered pan, add a chopped up cheese slice to the mix. Then fry the lot, constantly stirring (otherwise it'll burn) until thickened to the degree you like. You can add anything to the mix before frying really - chopped up pieces of bacon, tomatoes and so on. Serve with a couple of slices of hot buttered toast, but not on top of the toast, because no matter how much you drain your scrambled eggs, they make the toast soggy.

9. Can you work out what movie this is? Domesticated fowl with the trinomen Gallus gallus domesticus proceed at a pace considerably brisker than a saunter.

Answer: Chicken Run

The animated movie "Chicken Run" was released in 2000. It is the story of a group of chickens living on a farm, who need to hatch a plan to escape when their owners decide to start selling chicken pies instead of eggs. The film was written, directed and produced by Nick Park and Peter Lord, creators of Wallace and Gromit. The whole film was made in stop-motion animation, with approximately one minute of film recorded per week.
