Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Grandpa, what is a PLTYPS?

Answer: Platypus

The platypus (also called the duck-billed platypus) is a duck-billed, egg-laying, beaver-tailed, and otter-footed mammal living in eastern Australia and Tasmania. The male has a spur on the hind foot that delivers venom, making the platypus one of the very few mammals that are venomous. Now protected throughout its range, the platypus is a symbol of Australia and appears on the 20-cent coin.
2. What is a FNNCFX that has such big ears?

Answer: Fennec fox

The fennec fox is found in the Sahara Desert area. Nocturnal, it has adapted to its high-temperature, low-water desert environment quite well. Its signature large ears help it detect prey moving underground as well as dissipating heat. Its diet consists mostly of small mammals, birds, and insects. Its main predators are African varieties of the eagle owl.
3. What is a WLDBST? It has a beard.

Answer: Wildebeest

The wildebeest (or gnu),a type of antelope, has two species, both native to Africa. The blue wildebeest is the most abundant big game animal in east Africa. Some herds annually migrate to fresh grazing grounds. Black wildebeests live in the grasslands of south Africa and are fully nomadic. Both species often graze in herds with zebras to be more aware of predators. Wildebeests, although a favorite prey of large carnivores, are among the animals of "least concern" regarding extinction.
4. What is this very strange animal called RMDLL?

Answer: Armadillo

About eleven types of armadillos exist today, many of which are endangered. They vary considerably in size. The smallest, the pink fairy armadillo, is about the size of a chipmunk (3 ounces and 5-6 inches long); the largest, the giant armadillo, is the size of a small pig (up to 119 pounds and 59 inches long).

They are found throughout South and Central America, particularly in Paraguay. The nine-banded armadillo is also found in the United States where its lack of natural predators has allowed it to take firm hold in the southwest and southeast, as far east as Florida and South Carolina and as far north as Nebraska and Indiana.
5. Grandpa, what is the full name of this beautiful creature: RDPND?

Answer: Red panda

Slightly larger than a domestic cat, the red panda has reddish-brown fur, and a long, shaggy tail with circular stripes. It is omnivorous, existing mainly on bamboo but also on eggs, birds, insects, and small mammals. An endangered species (fewer than 10,000 in the wild), it is native to the temperate forests of the Himalayas, ranging from western Nepal eastward to China.
6. What is a FLYNGFX? It looks like a huge bat!

Answer: Flying fox

The flying fox, or fruit bat, is the largest bat in existence. At least 60 species still exist. They live in the tropics and subtropics of Asia, India, Australia, East Africa, and on many islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. They do not have echolocation as most bat species do. They eat fruit, blossoms, nectar, and pollen.
7. What kind of ape is a BNB?

Answer: Bonobo

The bonobo is an endangered great ape that lives in Central Africa in the Congo Basin of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The bonobo has pink lips, a dark face, long legs, a tail-tuft, and parted long hair on its head. Along with the chimpanzee, the bonobo is the closet extant relative of human beings.

Its existence is threatened by both habitat destruction and illegal poaching. Estimates suggest there may be as few as 30,000 left in the wild.
8. The SBRNTGR is a beautiful animal. What is it called?

Answer: Siberian tiger

The Siberian tiger (also known as the Amur tiger) is endangered, with approximately 562 left in the wild. It is the largest living cat, with males weighing between 390 and 475 pounds and about 6 1/2 to nine feet long, plus a three-foot+ tail. The females weigh 260-300 pounds, and are about 5 1/2 to eight feet long, with a three-foot+ long tail.

It is a beautiful cat, reddish-rusty or rusty-yellow, with narrow black traverse stripes.
9. The BCTRNCML does not look like a llama. What is it?

Answer: Bactrian camel

The Bactrian camel with two humps is much rarer than the dromedary camel with one hump. It is classified as critically endangered, with fewer than 800 left in the wild, however, it has a domestic population of up to two million in captivity. Native to the central Steppes of Asia, the domesticated Bactrian camel has been a pack animal in Asia since ancient times because of its tolerance for high altitudes, drought, cold, and wind.
10. The BRWNBR seems very fierce. What is it called?

Answer: Brown bear

The category brown bear includes a number of species including the Himalayan brown bear, grizzly bear, and Kodiak bear. Brown bears are distributed across much of North America and northern Eurasia. They are the largest carnivores on land. Depending on the species, they can weigh up to 1500 pounds. Brown bears are not often brown.

They can be reddish, yellow-brown, cinnamon, very dark brown, or cream-white. They have huge, curved front claws and massive jaws. They have no natural predator, only humans.
