Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Start with the word ABDUCTIONS. The aliens kidnap one of your letters and they demand that you rearrange those that remain to identify either an ancient Aldean computer system ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" TV series) or create a word that means caretaker or guardian.

Answer: CUSTODIAN

In episode 17, "When the Bough Breaks", of the first season of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" a young Wesley Crusher, played by Wil Wheaton, is shown the Custodian, an ancient computer system that the Aldeans have come to rely on heavily over the years. Alas, they have little understanding of its workings.
2. Those annoying little aliens have stolen another one of your letters and they have demanded that you rearrange those that remain to form another word. For some reason the novel "The Last of the Jedi: Dark Warning" flashes through your mind and you realise you must form another word that means warnings.

Answer: CAUTIONS

Written by Jude Watson and released in 2005 the series follows the adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ferus Olin, taking up the story where the film "Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith" (2005) ends.
3. Those excruciating extraterrestrials have taken another letter but they've given you a video game called "Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure" that features a little green man with cup-like hands and it hints toward your next word - a force that allows Cosmo to adhere to a surface because of the difference between the external and internal pressures.

Answer: SUCTION

Released in 1992, the game deals with a little alien with red spots, red hair, an overbite that would make Bart Simpson envious and suction caps for hands. His big adventure - his parents are taking him to Disneyland. Truly cosmic!
4. Oh No! While you weren't looking an ET has abducted another of your letters and left a ransom demand; 'Sigourney Weaver's character, Gwen DeMarco, in the film "Galaxy Quest" had one of her uniforms torn. Rearrange your remaining letters to create another word that means uniforms or else ...'

Answer: TUNICS

"By Grabthar's hammer" as if Sigourney's outfit wasn't cut low enough in this film, she has to go and tear it as well. I guess that's entertainment. "Galaxy Quest" (1999) sees the cast of a cult science fiction show find themselves involved in the real thing with humorous consequences.
5. These strangers from a galaxy (far, far away) have hijacked another of your letters and left you with two things; a vision of Obi-Wan Kenobi finding divisions of clone troopers on Kamino and a request that you rearrange your remaining letters to form a word that means divisions.

Answer: UNITS

The scene described in the question appears in the movie "Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones" (2002), which is set ten years after the events that were the basis for "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace" (1999). Obi-Wan discovers that the Republic is having the troops created secretly using the genes of a bounty hunter called Jango Fett.
6. The space travellers return and pilfer yet another letter ("when will this end" you wonder) and inform you that you need to create a word with the rearranged remainder that completes this famous sci-fi phrase; "Set your phasers to _____"

Answer: STUN

You were not a decent writer of "Star Trek" episodes if you could not somehow introduce the above line into the storyline. What amazes me is that there are so many settings for stun. There is "low stun setting", which is also called "setting number one" or "base cycle stunning force", there's a higher setting that can cause humans to slip into unconsciousness and then, at the top of the heap, the highest setting which can go by the names of "maximum stun", "full stun" and "strong stun position" among others. I'm sorry but "Set your phasers to base cycle stunning force" doesn't quite have the same magic for me.
7. "In 2000's "The Chronicles of Riddick: Pitch Black"," says the little green man as he kidnaps another of your letters, "a planet is kept in perpetual daylight by three celestial bodies. Look at your remaining letters and tell me what one of those celestial bodies is"?

Answer: SUN

You may have noticed that I didn't ask you to rearrange the letters. If you had managed to get the previous one correct, the simple act of removing the letter should have left you with the correct answer. In the movie above, the planet has three suns that keep it in constant daylight. It is not quite perpetual as every 22 years there is a massive eclipse, which plunges the planet into total darkness for a month. That's when the nasty beasties come out to play.
8. An otherworldly delegation arrives to tell you have done well, so well they're giving you a letter along with a picture of a photon cannon from the video game "StarCraft". Your mission is to use these four letters and rearrange them to make a word that means cannons.

Answer: GUNS

StarCraft is a real time strategy video game that was created by Blizzard Entertainment in 1998. Within the game is a humanoid race called the Protoss who are both physically strong and technically advanced. The photon cannon is their sole static defence weapon.
9. You're sitting down watching the "Stargate" episode where Dr Lee gets duped, when your space brothers arrive and request that you accept another letter, add it to the ones you have, rearrange them and create a word that means duped or conned.

Answer: STUNG

The episode in question is "The Return, Part II" from the third season of "Stargate Atlantis", which involves Colonel Sheppard's team pooling their resources to overrun the Asurans who were, at the time, in control of Atlantis. In the script Dr Lee goes so far as to compare his being duped with the events in the 1973 movie "The Sting", which starred Paul Newman and Robert Redford.
10. The aliens thrust a picture in your face. "This is our final request. We will give you another letter but you must name this man who once worked as a slave for Mawbo Kem. Rearrange your letters to form a slang term for those who are unskilled workers, those that perform routine or mundane tasks".

Answer: GRUNTS

Grunts is a male Weequay from the Star Wars dynasty. Before working for Kem he was won in a game of Sabacc by Han Solo. Solo set him free but then hired him to help with the loading of cargo. However, Grunts and Chewbacca did not get on well together so Han terminated the employment.
