Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. CAN + ? = A church law

Answer: On

'Canon' is a term most frequently seen in relation to ecclesiastical matters. It refers to the general laws and principles of a denomination, or canons may relate to the criteria used to adjudicate on a matter. Canons are also used by the legal fraternity to proscribe and maintain the ethics of the profession.
2. CAN + ? = Party finger food

Answer: Ape

Canape: Some define canape as an hors d'oeuvre served prior to a dinner party or during a cocktail party and consisting of a bread or pastry with a savoury topping. The term has grown to mean any sort of finger food served prior to a meal. This surprised me: 'canape' comes from the French word for sofa! It seems the topping on a piece of bread or pastry is reminiscent of people sitting on a couch.
3. CAN + ? = A political division of Switzerland

Answer: Ton

Switzerland is divided into 26 cantons, the equivalent of states or provinces. The largest canton is Zurich with a population of over 1.4 million people in 1,729 sq. kilometres. Basel-Stadt is the smallest canton stretching with a mere 37 sq. kilometres and a population of around 200,000.
4. CAN + ? = A strong cloth

Answer: Vas

Vas can refer to any vessel or duct in a body, but the most commonly known use of the term is in the vas deferens, part of the male reproductive system. It's also the name of a county division of Hungary whose history goes back to being a division of the Kingdom of Hungary.
5. CAN + ? = Outspoken, truthful

Answer: Did

Candid can refer to someone who speaks frankly, perhaps to the point of being derogatory. It can also mean a photograph of a person taken without being posed or without the subject being aware of the photograph being taken.

Allen Funt hosted a TV show called 'Candid Camera' in which unsuspecting people became the subject of practical jokes, their responses being recorded for the show. At times truly hilarious, the show was on air for over twenty years in the United States.
6. Can + ? = A division of a poem

Answer: To

A canto is a convenient division of a poem rather than a rigid construct such as a set number of lines. Coming from the Latin 'canere' which means to sing, cantos (within poems) were often sung by minstrels to their audiences rather than being recited.
7. CAN + ? = A waterway

Answer: Al

Canals can be found around the world and the idea dates back thousands of years. Mesopotamia was the scene of irrigation canals six thousand years ago, while Egypt had a canal built under the order of Pepi I Meryre around 2,300 BC to aid navigation of the Nile by bypassing a small waterfall.

The longest canal in the world is the Grand Canal of China. It stretches 1,776 km (over 1,100 miles) between Beijing and Hangzhou. The 5th century BC saw the early parts of the canal being built, but it didn't come together as one waterway until around 600 AD in the Sui Dynasty.
8. CAN + ? = English king of 1017 - 1035

Answer: Ute

The Ute people are a tribe of Native Americans who predominantly live in Utah and Colorado. The state of Utah derives its name from this tribe. The Ute language is from the same division of the Uto-Aztecan as the Shoshone Comanche and Paiutes languages.

A 'ute' in Australia is what many people call a pickup truck. It's short for utility vehicle and many an Aussie is proud of his (or her) ute!

King Canute ruled over the people of England, Norway and Denmark from 1016 to 1035. He was the son of Sweyn Forkbeard who was the son of Harald Bluetooth. The story of King Canute trying to stop the tide advancing isn't accurate. In order to prove that royalty are mere mortals, he commanded the tide to stop and when it didn't, he proclaimed that the only being worthy of the title of 'king' was God. It was an exercise in humility rather than vainglory. He apparently never wore a crown again.
9. CAN + ? = An official singer in a church or synagogue

Answer: Tor

Cantor, as did canto in a preceding question, comes from the Latin 'canere' meaning to sing. In a Christian church, the cantor will lead the congregation by singing a solo passage to which the congregation will then respond. A Jewish cantor is the leader of prayers in a synagogue as well as singing and is often known as the hazzan.
10. Can + ? = Frankness and sincerity

Answer: Dour

Candid (an adjective) and candour (a noun) are related etymologically. Candid comes from the Latin 'candidus' meaning white, while candour comes from 'candor' meaning whiteness. White and whiteness relate to purity and impartiality, or being devoid of malice. Therefore, candid speech or speaking with candour hides no other message - it is frank and honest.
