Answer: Oxygen

Ox(yg)en. Yuri Gagarin's initials are yg, oxen are beasts of burden and oxygen is air.
3. House's groan invoking joke sounds plain, simple and unpretentious.

Answer: Homespun

Homes-pun. Houses are homes. A bad joke is a pun. If you're plain, simple and unpretentious you're homespun.(like me).
4. Not a gem, but in retrospect a real bomb.

Answer: Megaton

Megaton is "Not a gem" spelled backwards. Megaton is the description of a very powerful bomb.

Answer: Britain

Br(it)ain. It in brain results in Britain.
6. Coconut cookie is made with abbreviated cooler in red.

Answer: Macaroon

Maroon is red and ac is short for air conditioning. Inserting "ac" into maroon results in macaroon.
7. Am I Kay? No, I'm a backwards town in Washington.

Answer: Yakima

Yakima is a great city (only backwards for this cryptic).
8. Anne K. Finster was transformed into a famous movie scientist.

Answer: Frankenstein

Anne K. Finster is an anagram for Frankenstein.
9. Sixteenth letter plus first letter make a bearlike animal.

Answer: Panda

P-and-a. P is 16th letter, A is first letter. P-AND-A, or Panda.
10. Simple arms reveal disguise of famous detective.

Answer: Miss Marple

"Simple arms" is an anagram of "Miss Marple".
