Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It was so cold at Old Trafford that Marouane Fellaini's afro stood on end.

Answer: frost

aFRO STood = frost.

Frost is also a character in the 'Mortal Kombat' series, a student of Sub-Zero whose arrogant attitude got her into trouble with the likes of Sonya Blade. (For non-football fans, Marouane Fellaini is a Belgian footballer, notable for his very big hair.)
2. The weather was so bad that the drain ended up getting blocked.

Answer: rain

dRAIN = rain.

'Rain' was the name of the band in which Noel Gallagher played before Oasis, not to be confused with the Liverpool band of the same name. It is also the name of another 'Mortal Kombat' character, a purple-clad prince with weather powers. He's a reference to the Prince album 'Purple Rain'.
3. "Would you like a cheese twist or meat pie?" the hostess asked me, as the lightning raged outside.

Answer: storm

twiST OR Meat = storm.

Storm is also the codename of Ororo Munroe, one of the X-Men, who has the ability to fly and weather related powers such as changing the temperature and manipulating atmospheric pressure. She was played by Halle Berry in several of the 'X-Men' live action films.
4. "Is Lee taking the penalty?" asked the commentator. "I can barely see a thing in this weather."

Answer: sleet

iS LEE Taking = sleet.

In the UK, sleet is basically a mixture of rain and snow - snow that melts while falling and turns into rain. In the US, the term 'sleet' is used to refer to ice pellets.
5. "Ha! I'll tell you what killed him," snorted the detective. "It was one of those giant stones!"

Answer: hail

HA I'Ll = hail.

A hailstone of record size fell in Vivian, South Dakota, in 2010, with a diameter of 20cm (8 inches). It weighed 0.88kg (1.93lb).
6. It was looking grim outside, so I played my Beach Boys disc loud to cheer myself up.

Answer: cloud

disC LOUD = cloud.

Cloud is also the lead character in 'Final Fantasy VII', the game considered by many fans to be the breakout for the 'Final Fantasy' series. He is a mercenary with memory issues who carries a very large sword, the Buster Sword. He also appears in 'Kingdom Hearts', a Square Enix crossover featuring Disney characters.
7. The UFO got lost in the London pea souper.

Answer: fog

UFO Got = fog.

In Victorian times, particularly dense smogs in London were known as 'pea soupers' because of their density and greenish yellow colour. In turn, a type of pea soup, the London Particular, was named after the smog. One particularly toxic example, the Great Smog of London, killed at least 10,000 people in 1952, through a combination of respiratory tract infections and hypoxia.
8. "It's now or never," said the wildling, as winter closed in around the Wall.

Answer: snow

it'S NOW = snow.

The question is a reference to 'Game of Thrones'. I got the idea from the character Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington, a member of the Night's Watch, a group of people who guard the Wall on the northern border of the Seven Kingdoms. The wildlings are northern peoples who live on the other side of the Wall, have no central government, and sometimes attack in groups.
9. I found a moth under my bed while I was hiding from the scary lightning.

Answer: thunder

moTH UNDER = thunder.

Thunder is also the name of a hard rock band from London, fronted by Danny Bowes. Their hits include 'Backstreet Symphony' and 'Love Walked In'.
10. There's panic everywhere in Britain when the roads are frozen.

Answer: ice

panIC Everywhere = ice.

There is an unincorporated community in Kentucky called Ice, which got its name after a local complained about the icy weather. 'Ice' is also the name of a book in Ed McBain's '87th Precinct' series, centred around the murder of a dancer involved in cocaine dealing.
