Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Add a consonant to ENTER, stir vigorously, and offer a gentle boat.

Answer: tender

TENDER is a very flexible word. It can mean 'young', as in 'tender age', 'easy to eat', 'give' (tender your resignation), a railway carriage, and even 'painful' (my arm was tender from my Covid jab.) A tender is also a small boat, usually carried by a large boat.
2. Using the letters of ENTER plus one other, describe something that is tidier.

Answer: neater

There are another couple of anagrams- 'entera' is the plural of the elementary canal in an embryo, and 'rateen' is a type of cloth.
3. Use only four of the letters in ENTER and find a living thing that is used in genealogical pedigrees.

Answer: tree

Tracing your family tree is a fun hobby. I found a connection to UK royalty in mine!
4. You could use this large serving dish to mix the letters of ENTER with an extra vowel. Soup, anyone?

Answer: tureen

Tureens are functional, but many are very ornamental. They are mainly used for the first course of a meal, usually soup. In 1996, a silver tureen made in France in 1733, changed hands for a whopping US$10 million! A very nice way to impress your dinner guests...
5. Use the mixed letters of ENTER, plus one more and back-pedal, or become less strict.

Answer: relent

The word comes from the Latin word for 'flexible', or 'bend'.
6. Drop a letter from ENTER and a seabird will appear.

Answer: tern

Terns are found worldwide, with the Arctic tern being a real long-distance champion, flying from their nesting grounds in northern Canada, Russia and Greenland, all the way to Antarctica, and back again.

The 'erne' is a poetic name for the white-tailed sea-eagle, which is mainly found in Europe and Asia. Thanks to player gmackematix for this addition.
7. Double one of the letters in ENTER and an enzyme used in cheese-making should develop.

Answer: rennet

Rennet is obtained from the stomach lining of young calves, and is used to separate milk into curds (the solid part of milk used to make cheese), and whey (the liquid component).
8. Mix up ENTER and add a consonant. Can you find a Mauritian omnivorous mammal that resembles a shrew? There are several different species, and most are nocturnal.

Answer: tenrec

Tenrecs come in various sizes, from as little as 5 cms long to over 30 cms. They can live in and near water, up trees and even underground.
9. Mix the letters of ENTER with a consonant and reveal a person that acts for a monarch.

Answer: regent

A regent advises or assists a king or queen, for various reasons. For example, George IV of the United Kingdom, was Prince Regent for his father, George III, after the latter was no longer capable of being king, because of mental insanity in the last part of his life.
10. Using all the letters of ENTER plus a consonant, you will find yourself in the middle of it all.

Answer: centre

The Red Centre of Australia is so named, because it is red, and is at the centre of the country! It is an ill-defined area of red-soiled desert surrounding Ayers Rock and Alice Springs in the southern Northern Territory (so named because it is a territory in the north of the country).
