Question 1 of 10
1. Okay, time for a change in the style of this quiz. I'm going to use a mono-alphabetic substitution, in the first and last questions. For those of you who don't know, a mono-alphabetic substitution is where each letter is denoted by one number.

Right, let's get going then!

To determine which letter is denoted by which number, I will tell you this: the 14th letter from the END of the alphabet will be assigned the number 1, and each consecutive letter will be assigned to next consecutive number. When you reach Z, go back up to A and continue numbering.

Now that you've figured out which number goes with which letter, please encode the following phrase. Don't put spaces between the numbers; just make it one long number.

STRANGE MAGIC

Answer: (19 digits)
Question 2 of 10
2. Now, using the previous sequence of digits, reverse the order of the digits.

Answer: (19 digits)
Question 3 of 10
3. Add the last 2 digits. Remember this value. Now, remove the last two digits, and in their place, put the aforementioned value.

Answer: (19 digits)
Question 4 of 10
4. Mersenne primes are determined by the formula: (2^p)- 1, where p is a prime number. Please substitute the first prime number (not the first number in this quiz's sequence but the first prime generally) for the value of p. After you have evaluated the formula, take out this newly-created Mersenne prime from the digit sequence and place it at the beginning. Hope this question isn't too hard!

Answer: (19 digits)
Question 5 of 10
5. How about a simple question? Recall the number for United States Emergency Services. It's a 3-digit number. You should see this combination in the sequence. Please remove it.

Answer: (16 digits)
Question 6 of 10
6. Time for a bit of switcheroo-ing. Switch the positions of the 2nd and 3rd digits; and the 5th and 6th digits.

Answer: (16 digits)
Question 7 of 10
7. Two things to do this time! Copy the 14th digit. Place this copy after the second triangular number. Be sure to retain the original digit.
Then, change the 8th digit to the result of this: [(12 x 14) - (6 x 19)] / 6.

Answer: (17 digits)
Question 8 of 10
8. Work out the answer to: 209 / 19. Remove this number combination from the sequence.
Also remove the second combination of 2 digits that is twice the result of the aforementioned quotient.
Next, take out the number of the secret military base in Nevada, United States, and in its place insert the result of: 2 x 3 x 13.

Answer: (13 digits)
Question 9 of 10
9. Nearly done! Put spaces between the digits, so the sequence is in this form:

X X XX XX XX X X X XX.

Answer: (9 numbers separated by spaces)
Question 10 of 10
10. Finally, change each number into its corresponding letter, remove the spaces, and you'll have the final word.

Answer: (1 word, 9 letters)

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Okay, time for a change in the style of this quiz. I'm going to use a mono-alphabetic substitution, in the first and last questions. Don't put spaces between the numbers; just make it one long number. STRANGE MAGIC

Answer: 7861522119115212317

You should have worked out that M=1, N=2, O=3...and hence changed STRANGE MAGIC to 7 8 6 15 2 21 19 1 15 21 23 17.

Oh, and for those of you wondering, Strange Magic is the name of a song by Electric Light Orchestra. I was listening to it while I made this quiz :D
2. Now, using the previous sequence of digits, reverse the order of the digits.

Answer: 7132125119112251687

3. Add the last 2 digits. Remember this value. Now, remove the last two digits, and in their place, put the aforementioned value.

Answer: 7132125119112251615

The last two digits were 8 and 7. Add them to get 15. Replace 87 with 15. Too easy!

Answer: 3712125119112251615

The first prime number is 2 (1 is not classed as prime). So, you should get:

(2^2) - 1
= 4 - 1
= 3

Remove the 3 and place it at the beginning.
5. How about a simple question? Recall the number for United States Emergency Services. It's a 3-digit number. You should see this combination in the sequence. Please remove it.

Answer: 3712125112251615

The number for US Emergency Services is, of course, 911, but I'm sure you all knew that.
6. Time for a bit of switcheroo-ing. Switch the positions of the 2nd and 3rd digits; and the 5th and 6th digits.

Answer: 3172215112251615

Switch the 1 and the 7, and the 1 and the 2.
7. Two things to do this time! Copy the 14th digit. Place this copy after the second triangular number. Be sure to retain the original digit. Then, change the 8th digit to the result of this: [(12 x 14) - (6 x 19)] / 6.

Answer: 36172219112251615

The 14th digit is 6. 3 is the second triangular number, so place a 6 after it.

[(12 x 14) - (6 x 19)] / 6
= [168 - 114] / 6
= 54 / 6
= 9

Replace the 8th digit (5) with the above number (9).

Answer: 3617221978615

209 / 19 = 11. Remove that combination.
Twice 11 is 22. Remove that combination.
Area 51 is the military base. 2 x 3 x 13 = 78. Replace 51 with 78.
9. Nearly done! Put spaces between the digits, so the sequence is in this form: X X XX XX XX X X X XX.

Answer: 3 6 17 22 19 7 8 6 15

10. Finally, change each number into its corresponding letter, remove the spaces, and you'll have the final word.

Answer: ORCHESTRA

ORCHESTRA, of course, a reference to the original phrase: Strange Magic by Electric Light Orchestra.

And there you have it. Thanks for playing! Please let me know if you liked this format, or if you preferred the old style. Also, I'm planning to make FMD 16, so if you have any suggestions as to anything you'd like to see in it or future quizzes, do drop me a line.

Chow for now!
