Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. FL + tree = sudden burst of light

Answer: Flash

An ash is a type of tree and adding this to FL creates the word flash. The ash tree is native to Asia, North America and Europe and is a hardwood. A flash is a bright, but brief, light, such as in the flash bulbs used for photography. It can also be used figuratively, as in a 'flash of inspiration'.
2. FL + short linear measurement = to draw back

Answer: Flinch

An inch is a short measurement and adding this to FL creates flinch. In the imperial system, an inch is one twelfth of a foot. Another, rarer, meaning is that of a small island in a river. To flinch is to recoil, often in fear or shock, perhaps because someone is threatening to hit you, or you are in pain.
3. FL + cereal = to drift on air

Answer: Float

The cereal is oat, with the addition of FL creating the word float. Oat is a cereal grain, used to feed livestock and also prepared for human consumption, frequently as porridge, eaten at breakfast time. To float is to rely on air currents to keep you above ground, as in a hot air balloon.

It can also refer to floating on water, when buoyancy prevents you from sinking, and another kind of float is used in angling to alert the fisherman to a fish taking the bait.
4. FL + parent's sister = to show off

Answer: Flaunt

The sister of either parent is your aunt and you created the word flaunt by adding FL. Your aunt is a relative usually the sister of either your father or mother, or married to a brother of one of your parents. To flaunt is to make an ostentatious show of something, often designed to rub someone's nose in the fact that they haven't achieved the same thing. You can flaunt your wealth or your success.
5. FL + not in = to insult

Answer: Flout

The opposite of in is out and the new word of flout is created by adding it to FL. Out can also be described as the antonym to in. Flout can refer to an open insult or show of contempt, or be a refusal to follow convention or obey a rule or law.
6. FL + unit of weight = decoration on skirt

Answer: Flounce

An ounce is a weight unit and the word flounce is formed by adding FL. An ounce is a small unit of weight equivalent to one sixteenth of a pound. It is also another name for the snow leopard. A flounce can refer to a decorative frill on a skirt or blouse.

As a verb, it can be used to describe moving in an exaggerated way to draw attention to yourself, perhaps because you are angry or irritated - 'she flounced out of the room because her boyfriend was ignoring her'.
7. FL + to request = drink container

Answer: Flask

Ask is a synonym for request and a flask, when you add FL, holds liquid. Ask is usually used for a polite and fairly low key way of requesting something. A stronger and more impassioned way of asking is to implore. A flask is most often used to refer to a container for a fluid, sometimes alcoholic, as in a hip flask. A flask is also used to refer to an item of laboratory equipment.
8. FL + skin irritation = side of ham

Answer: Flitch

A skin irritation is an itch. Add FL and you get flitch. Even reading the word 'itch' is likely to make you feel that sensation on your skin which only a good scratch can resolve. A flitch can be a side of ham or pork. The word can also refer to a fish steak or a large piece of wood cut from a tree trunk.
9. FL + to speak = to flap wings

Answer: Flutter

When you speak you utter words. Add FL and you can flutter. Utter is a synonym for speak or pronounce and, as an adjective, can mean absolute or complete - 'those comments left me in utter amazement'. Flutter refers to flying around erratically and is often used to describe the movements of butterflies.
10. FL + tune = natural ability

Answer: Flair

A tune can be an air and flair is the new word created by adding FL. Air also refers to the gases we breathe and, as a verb, to bring something into the open as in 'to air a grievance'. Flair refers to an innate aptitude which makes it easy to learn something new, such as a language.
