Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To give permission.

Answer: consent

The age of consent for various things differs from country to country. In the UK for example, between the age of 16 and 18 one must gain the consent of both sets of parents for a marriage to take place. After 18 however, the power of consent lies with the individual. This also goes for most hospital treatment and many other issues.
2. A poem of fourteen lines.

Answer: Sonnet

William Shakespeare wrote 154 of these poems and perhaps his most famous is sonnet 18 which begins:

"Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date."
3. The same word completes the following: '___ cold' and 'drawing blood from a ___'.

Answer: stone

'Stone Cold', a phrase used to stress that something is ice cold, was also the nickname of the well known wrestler Steve Austin. The expression 'drawing blood from a stone' is used when something is found exceedingly difficult, such as borrowing money of someone who is stingy!
4. Long divisions of time in geology and other related scientific disciplines.

Answer: eons

An eon lasts for approximately half a billion years which really does make our eighty or so years on this planet insignificant in the grand scheme of things! There are further sub-divisions including an era which lasts for hundreds of millions of years.
5. The brother of your daughter.

Answer: son

One of the most well known family trees is that of the British royal family. The eldest son of the monarch is generally the heir to the throne. One of the limited ways a female can come to the throne is if they are the eldest daughter where there is no legitimate son.
6. Translate 'nein' from German into English to get a doctor in the James Bond novels.

Answer: No

Julius No is one of the villains created by the English author Ian Fleming and unsurprisingly he was one of the main characters in the first Jame Bond movie, 'Dr No'. Ian Fleming also wrote 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: The Magical Car' which was later adapted for both stage and screen.
7. Unity in the numerical sense.

Answer: One

It is a rather dated phrase but I still like it. Some facts about the number one:

It is the first integer that is both odd and positive.
Whatever power you raise the number one to, the outcome will always be one! So, you will get the answer one if you square one, cube one, raise one to the power of four and so on ad infinitum.
8. Your ulna is quite humerus isn't it?

Answer: Bone

Both the ulna and humerus are just four (each found in both arms) of the 206 bones that make up the skeleton. Bones are not only important for holding everything together but are vital in the production of red blood cells. The genesis of these cells, also known as erythrocytes, takes place within the bone marrow.

If only the humerus was actually spelled 'humorous' my dreadful attempt at a pun would have been a lot better!
9. A royal sounding name of a group of gaseous elements.

Answer: Noble

The noble gases (also known as inert gases) include argon, neon and krypton. Argon is used in light bulbs as it provides an inert environment for the current running through the tungsten filament wire to exist in.
10. Complete the LL Cool J lyric: "It feels so good to be back where I ___; The streets is where I ___".

Answer: Belong

This sounds like a most dreadful song, I have always thought that LL Cool J made for a better actor than a singer. He appeared in the film 'Deep Blue Sea', a 1999 production based around shark attacks that also starred Samuel L. Jackson.

Thanks for playing!
