Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The students are Anita, Cedric, David and Elise. Their family names are (in random order) Baker, Cooper, Fletcher and Thatcher. They come from Cornwall, Essex, Kent or Lincolnshire (not necessarily in that order). They travel to (at random) Argentina, Canada, New Zealand or South Africa. Here are the clues you'll need. 1. Not a single combination starts with the same initial. So (for instance) Cedric, Cooper, Canada and Cornwall all apply to different people. 2. Both girls pay their expenses abroad in the local dollar: Canadian or New Zealand dollar. 3. David hails from Cornwall. 4. The student with the surname Baker travels to Canada. 5. The student from Essex spends a year in New Zealand. 6. The student with the surname Thatcher comes from Lincolnshire. 7. Cedric goes to South Africa. With these clues, you'll have to solve the following questions. Combine multiple clues and see what you come up with. Sometimes I'll refer in the answer to a reasoning set out in another question. Question: who comes from Essex?

Answer: Anita

Clue number 5 indicates that the student from Essex goes to New Zealand and lets the local dollars roll. Clue number 2 states that a girl spends dollars in New Zealand. Clue number 1 excludes Elise from Essex, for this combination would start with the same initial. That leaves us with Anita as the student coming from Essex.
2. What is the first name of the student surnamed Baker?

Answer: Elise

Clue number 4 states that Baker goes to Canada. Clue number 2 indicates this has to be one of the girls: Anita or Elise. It also indicates that the other girl goes to New Zealand. Clue number 5 puts the girl from Essex in New Zealand, and the answer to question 1 is that Anita (not Elise) hails from Essex. So Elise goes to Canada, and her surname is Baker.
3. What is Anita's surname?

Answer: Cooper

The answer to question number 1 showed us that Anita is from Essex and that she travels to New Zealand. Clue number 1 points out that every student must have either a first name, or a surname, or a home county, or a destination that starts with C. Anita comes from Essex and goes to New Zealand, so her surname should start with C - thus Cooper is her surname.
4. From which county did someone travel to Canada?

Answer: Kent

The student who lets the Canadian dollar roll, is Elise Baker (answer to question number 2). She doesn't come from Essex (clue number 5), nor from Cornwall (clue number 3), nor from Lincolnshire (clue number 6). So that leaves us only Kent.
5. Which county does Fletcher call home?

Answer: Cornwall

Clue number 6 excludes Lincolnshire. The answer to question number 4 shows us (Elise) Baker is from Kent. The answer to question 2 demonstrates that (Anita) Cooper is from Essex. So Fletcher has to come from Cornwall.
6. Who lets the peso roll in Argentina?

Answer: David

Clue number 2 excludes both girls Elise and Anita. Clue number 7 puts Cedric in South Africa. So only David can spend a year in Argentina.
7. What is the surname of the student who spends several rand in South Africa?

Answer: Thatcher

Question number 2 shows us Elise is named Baker. Question number 3 demonstrates Anita is named Cooper. Cedric and David carry the surnames Fletcher or Thatcher. Cedric goes to South Africa (clue number 7). David is from Cornwall (clue number 3). Thatcher is from Lincolnshire (clue number 6), so David is not called Thatcher. That leaves us Cedric Thatcher who goes to South Africa.
8. To which country does Fletcher travel?

Answer: Argentina

The answer to question number 2 puts (Elise) Baker in Canada. The answer to question number 3 shows us (Anita) Cooper in New Zealand. In question 7 we demonstrated that (Cedric) Thatcher goes to South Africa. That leaves only Argentina for Fletcher.
9. Where does Cedric come from?

Answer: Lincolnshire

The reasoning in question number 7 demonstrates that Cedric Thatcher spends a year in South Africa. Clue number 6 indicates Thatcher comes from Lincolnshire. So Cedric is from Lincolnshire.
10. Where does Elise let her money roll?

Answer: Canada

In question number 2 we concluded that Elise is named Baker. Clue number 4 indicates Baker goes to Canada. So Elise lets the Canadian dollar roll.

And now the full solution to this logic puzzle.
Anita Cooper from Essex goes to New Zealand and lets some Kiwi dollars roll.
Cedric Thatcher from Lincolnshire visits South Africa. He lets the rand roll.
David Fletcher from Cornwall goes to Argentina, where he lets the peso roll.
And Elise Baker from Kent spends a year in Canada. She lets her Canadian dollars roll.
