Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. SE1: Comes directly before SE5 alphabetically and directly after SE3

Answer: Stampede

First of all, an explanation of the solution:

SE2 has to be either Sapphire or Struggle as these are the only words containing consecutive consonants. As SE8 comes alphabetically directly after SE2, that removes Struggle as an option and identifies SE2 as Sapphire and SE8 as Schedule.

SE3 doesn't contain any 'A's so can now only be Sixpence, Solitude or Struggle. However, as it is followed alphabetically by SE1 and SE5 it can't be Struggle. It also follows that SE1 has to be Solitude or Stampede and SE5 has to be Stampede or Steerage. We know that SE5 has to contain four vowels (the highest number contained in any of the words), so that rules out Stampede and confirms SE1, SE3 and SE5 as Stampede, Solitude and Steerage respectively.

All the letters of SE10 are different, so of the remaining five options it has to be Scramble. SE7 contains three different vowels, so can't be Sixpence or Struggle. It also has to come after SE4 alphabetically, so it can't be Sabotage either and therefore has to be Seahorse. SE4 has to be Sabotage as that is the only word remaining that comes before Seahorse alphabetically.

That leaves SE6 and SE9 to be either Sixpence or Struggle. SE9 has two 'E's in it, so is Sixpence and SE6 is left to be Struggle by elimination. I hope the puzzle didn't prove to be too much of a struggle for you!

---

A stampede is a disorderly rush of animals or people. Stampedes of herd animals such as horses or cattle are usually associated with the animals being frightened and spooking each other into running away. However, it can also mean events such as the Calgary Stampede rodeo held each year in Alberta, Canada or scenarios where a crowd of people trample over each other in a quest to get to the front of the queue.
2. SE2: Contains two consecutive consonants that are the same

Answer: Sapphire

Sapphire is a gemstone that is a form of corundum and is usually blue in colour. However, pretty much every other possible colour of corundum, except red (which is known as ruby), can also be classed as a sapphire. The blue colour in a traditional sapphire occurs when the corundum contains trace amounts of both titanium and iron.
3. SE3: Does not contain the letter 'A'

Answer: Solitude

Solitude is about being on your own. Many people crave a bit of solitude so the term shouldn't be confused with loneliness, which more specifically relates to unhappiness caused by being alone.

The 1967 novel 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is about seven generations of the same family who live in a small isolated town that is disconnected from wider society.
4. SE4: Alphabetically, this comes somewhere before SE7

Answer: Sabotage

To sabotage something is to deliberately destroy it, usually for the purpose of preventing an event or occurrence from taking place. During conflicts, military forces often tend to sabotage key resources in order to hinder the progress of their enemies or prevent something falling into enemy hands.

The damage doesn't have to be physical - in a political context, sabotaging an enemy could simply mean damaging their reputation in order to influence the electorate against them.
5. SE5: No word has more vowels in it than this one

Answer: Steerage

Steerage is a nautical term. Historically it referred to the act of steering a vessel, but it could also mean the lower decks of a ship located just above the hold. In the 19th and 20th centuries, these areas of steam-powered passenger ships were the location of the cheapest and most spartan accommodation available on board and the passengers who occupied them were referred to as being 'in steerage'.
6. SE6: This word contains one less vowel than SE9

Answer: Struggle

To struggle is to fight or to battle against something. This could be a physical assault but, in most cases, someone who is struggling is doing battle with themselves to achieve a difficult task or trying to overcome some form of adversity.

Logic puzzles can be a real mental struggle!
7. SE7: Contains three different vowels

Answer: Seahorse

A seahorse is a small fish of the genus Hippocampus that is notable in the animal world because it is the male that gives birth to the offspring. Male seahorses have a pouch into which the female will lay her eggs. The eggs develop in their father's pouch and the young seahorses are expelled from the pouch shortly after hatching.
8. SE8: Comes directly after SE2 alphabetically

Answer: Schedule

As a noun, schedule is another word for a timetable, or a list of plans and procedures. As a verb, to schedule something is to determine its place in a timeline of events or to arrange a time for something to take place. It can also mean the act of adding something to a list - for example, in the UK buildings or monuments become scheduled when they are added to the register of protected sites.
9. SE9: Contains two letter 'E's

Answer: Sixpence

A sixpence is a former British coin that was worth, somewhat unsurprisingly, six pennies prior to decimalisation. The process of decimalisation changed the value of the penny, with six old pennies being equivalent to 2.5 new pence. Sixpence coins were originally made from silver and were first minted in 1551 during the short reign of King Edward VI. Traditionally they were also placed in Christmas puddings and it was considered lucky to find one - as long as you didn't break a tooth on it of course!
10. SE10: Contains eight different letters

Answer: Scramble

To scramble can be to rush to manage something, for example it could be a scramble to gather something together or fighter pilot may have to scramble to get their plane in the air. It can also mean to climb up difficult terrain, such as a steep slope, in a speedy manner.

Another meaning is to mix something up, for example, when scrambling an egg. More specifically, it is a term used in American Football for a run made by a quarterback in certain circumstances in order to avoid being tackled.
