Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Please note: This quiz was written several years ago when punctuation was allowed in Fill in the Blank quizzes. This means you WILL need to include apostrophes in the answer if appropriate. Crook seashore too deep.

Answer: Look before you leap

...but "He who hesitates is lost".
2. Many lies sound ghoulish

Answer: Penny wise pound foolish

This is often attributed to poet Robert Burton (1577-1640) and usually means that people will often go out of their way to save pennies while losing pounds elsewhere. Strangely, another well-known English proverb says "Take care of the pence and the pounds will take care of themselves".
3. Head when swell so fails

Answer: Dead men tell no tales

This proverb's earliest mention is in the 17th century and is the favourite saying of the gangster. But they also say "Murder will out".
4. Repair leaks tearing rifts

Answer: Beware Greeks bearing gifts

Classicists will recognise "I fear the Greeks, even when they bear gifts" from the English translation of Virgil's Aeneid. It was the warning given by Laocoon to the Trojans concerning the famous wooden horse. For their trouble, Laocoon and his son were then eaten by a big sea serpent.
Another famous proverb says "Never look a gift horse in the mouth"!
5. Walls fell at friends' yell

Answer: All's well that ends well

This is the title of one of Shakespeare's lesser performed comedies. The character Helen says this proverb more than once in this play but how "well" it ends for her and the other characters is debatable.
6. Wet seeping logs dry

Answer: Let sleeping dogs lie

This dates back to the 14th century. Another proverb advocating caution is "Never trouble trouble till trouble troubles you".
7. Funny walks

Answer: Money talks

"That money talks, I'll not deny. I heard it once. It said 'Goodbye'" - Richard Armour
8. Chased what hunt got

Answer: Waste not want not

Although those who do the wasting are sadly often not the people who do the wanting.
9. Who has to could see fun die

Another 14th century proverb. Those familiar with Charles Kingsley's "The Water Babies" will remember the governesses, Mrs Doasyouwouldbedoneby and Mrs Bedonebyasyoudid.
10. ...and finally the title of this quiz: Rhyme wise

Answer: Time flies

It does when you're having fun. I hope you have had fun here.
