Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. WORDWISE: Can you work out the two-word answer to the Wordwise below? SGEG

Answer: Scrambled Eggs

The question seemed appropriate for a Scrambled Eggheads team quiz!

The meal of scrambled eggs is a standard breakfast dish usually made by beating several eggs together with some milk, butter and salt and pepper. Any other ingredients can be added to this to suit one's taste, or they can be eaten just as they come out of the pan.

2. IN OTHER WORDS: "The feline apparelled in the chapeau" is the title of which literary classic, reworded?

Answer: The Cat in the Hat

"The Cat in The Hat" is a children's picture book by Dr Seuss, which was the pseudonym of Theodor Geisel (chosen because his father had wanted him to get a doctorate and "Seuss" was his middle, and mother's maiden, name).

First published in 1957, it tells the story of a tall, eccentric cat who saves two children, Sally and her brother, from boredom one rainy day.

3. CRYPTIC CLUE: The following cryptic clue should lead you to the answer: Is this Shakespearean King returning to this country in the Middle East?

Answer: Israel

The route to the answer is as follows:

Is (within the clue) plus (King) Lear (returning) = ISRAEL

Israel is a country in the Middle East, on the Mediterranean Sea. The modern state of Israel was established in 1948 as a Jewish homeland, on land that was at that time part of the British territory of Palestine. The adjoining Arab states immediately attacked Israel but they were overthrown. Conflict with the Arab nations continued over the rights of the Palestinians displaced from their homes and this led to continual tension and terrorist and military activity. Further wars occurred in 1956, 1967, and 1973, resulting in the Israeli occupation of eastern Jerusalem, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and the Golan Heights. In 1993 Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization signed an agreement for limited Palestinian autonomy in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, but this also failed to bring about an end to the conflict.

4. IN OTHER WORDS: Given to you in other words, can you work out the name of the popular presenter of a children's show set in a neighborhood? Courteous address for a man PLUS Surname of American actor/singer who owned a horse named Trigger.

Answer: Mister Rogers

Born 20 March 1928, Fred (Mr.) Rogers hosted the immensely popular children's TV show, "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" over five decades. Known for his endless wardrobe of sweaters, Mr. Rogers would happily proclaim in each show: "It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood". Exactly how he could know that, I have no idea. In addition to being awarded The Presidential Medal of Freedom by George W. Bush in 2002, Mr. Rogers was also a Presbyterian minister.

6. BEFORE AND AFTER: What is the connecting word before BUZZARD and after THANKSGIVING that gives a well known, periodically unfortunate, creature?

Answer: Turkey

Turkeys are native to ancient Mexico where they were known to have been domesticated there from at least 800 BC. They were gradually introduced to the rest of the world from early settlement by Europeans. These large birds frequently find their unfortunate way onto many tables at various times of the year, particularly in the United States. They are rather lovely creatures from the neck down, especially when the male struts and ruffles his tail feathers out in a dazzling fanlike display. The head of the bird though is rather repulsive looking with wobbly bits of pink flesh hanging down here and there, and with scrawny, red and wrinkly necks. Known as snoods, wattles and caruncles, those wobbly bits on the turkey's head become even redder when the male is trying to attract a mate, and his snood elongates. Freud, no doubt, would be delighted at that. Oh, and just for fun: Do you know what the turkey said before Thanksgiving? "Oh, oh, I'm stuffed!"

Answer: Meat Loaf

8. ANAGRAMS: Rearrange the capitalised letters in the following sentence to find a worldwide catastrophe which occurred in 2020: It is not so NICE when you find yourself quarantined in a DAMP, insalubrious hotel room.

Answer: Pandemic

SARS-coV-2 first burst onto the world early in 2020, but was possibly simmering away for some time prior to this. For example, Doctor Li Wenliang, who worked at the Wuhan Central Hospital in China where the outbreak is thought to have originated, issued a warning to several local hospitals about this mysterious new illness in December, 2019. He died from its deadly effects on 7 February 2020. The World Health Organisation was first informed of the coronavirus in January 2020, and declared it a "public health emergency of international concern".

9. CRYPTIC CLUE: The following cryptic clue will hopefully lead you to the required answer: Starting school on Friday in Athens? No, another capital city!

Answer: Sofia

The intended route to the answer is as follows:

Starting indicates the initial letters of each of the following 5 words are used = SOFIA

Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria, it was colonized by the Romans in 29 AD and became the capital city in 1879. During World War II the city was occupied by German forces, until it was liberated in 1944 by the Soviet Union who then installed a Communist government.

The city is situated in a valley located in the western part of Bulgaria, at the foot of the Vitosha mountain massif. This mountain was originally formed by volcanic activity, and has since been reshaped by a series of lower intensity eruptions affecting its granite rock layers.

10. FRACTURED WORD: Just say the words below out loud (and fairly quickly) to work out the real word needed for your answer: JOG ROUGHIE

Answer: Geography

Geography is the study of land, its myriad features, its inhabitants, and how all the forms continue to change over time. This immensely broad discipline also deals with the biosphere, the atmosphere, and other planets even, and this is why it is normally broken down into two separate categories. The study of people, cultures, economy etc and how people adapt to their environment, or change it, is known as Human Geography. Physical Geography deals with the more external (to humans) environment and its ongoing amazing processes. The continent of Australia, for example, once contained a HUGE inland sea, now long gone, but with rising sea levels, who knows - perhaps it'll come flooding back in again in the future, and our country will look more like a curved croissant rather than it's much loved current shape. It may also bring more rain into this constantly thirsty land.

Did you know that a Roughie/Roughy is a small fish - or an outsider in a horse race? As a fish it's usually found in the waters of the Pacific. It belongs to the slimehead family of fish. What an awful name, and that's why its name was changed to appeal more to diners. The female of this species produces some 90,000 eggs in her lifetime. Imagine a poor little hen doing that. Repetitive strain injury big time.
