Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The game we now know as Sudoku is a played on a grid with the numbers 1-9. Where was this game originally invented?

Answer: United States

The game was invented in the US by a man named Howard Garns in 1979 who called it "Number Place". It became highly popular in Japan in the mid 1980s under the new name of Sudoku, which means "single number".
2. What is the best method for solving a Sudoku puzzle?

Answer: Logic

Sudoku is not a math-based game. Objects, letters colors or symbols could be used instead of numbers.
3. What mathematical construction are Sudoku puzzles based on?

Answer: Latin Squares

The Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler was the first to popularize Latin squares in the 1700s. He used Latin letters instead of numbers as a way to solve logic problems. Sudoku puzzles are a special subset of Latin squares where each 3x3 grid must also contain the numbers 1 through 9.
4. How many solved Sudoku puzzles (with all the numbers filled in) can be constructed from a standard 9x9 Sudoku grid?

Answer: Billions

The 9x9 grid has over 5 billion unique arrangements of numbers if you take into account rotations of the grid. This number was proved in 2005 using a computer program.
5. The first Sudoku world championship won by 31 year old Jana Tylová. It was held in 2006 in what European country?

Answer: Italy

The grueling two day long Championship was held in March 2006 in Lucca, Italy and won by the Czech Republic native, who was an accountant. Participants were tasked with solving both standard Sudoku puzzles as well as a number of variants in timed events.
