Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Here's an example of a Tom Swifty: "It's only average," said Tom ______. (6 m,ly) The clue in brackets tells the number of letters, along with the first letter and suffix of the word. Averages are also called means, so Tom must have spoken meanly. Got the hang of it? Here comes the first question. Have fun and good luck! "Don't forget to increase it by three!" Tom _____.

Answer: added

Increasing something by 3 would mean you would have added 3 to it, hence Tom added that comment.
2. "99 is almost 100," said Tom, _______.

Answer: roughly

Obviously 99 is not 100, but it's roughly the same, according to Tom.
3. "1, 3, 5, 7," said Tom, _____.

Answer: oddly

Since 1, 3, 5 and 7 are all odd numbers, Tom must have been speaking oddly.
4. "Space is an infinite set of points," said Tom, _________.

Answer: distantly

There must be some distance between those points, so that means Tom was speaking distantly.
5. "They are mirror images," Tom _________.

Answer: reflected

Of course, by making a mirror image of something, you are reflecting it. Tom observed the images and reflected on his thoughts.
6. "Consider a 2-dimensional linear universe," Tom said _______.

Answer: plainly

A 2-dimensional linear universe would be a plane. Since Tom was considering the possibility of this, he was speaking plainly.
7. "Not I," said Tom, _______________.

Answer: unimaginatively

This one might have been a little harder. i is the square root of -1. Since such a number cannot exist, it is called an imaginary number. Tom was saying "Not I", so he was speaking unimaginatively.
8. "We haven't discussed the addition problems yet!" said Tom, __________.

Answer: nonplussed

If there hasn't been any addition problems, there has been no plussing. Tom must have been speaking in a nonplussed (or nonplused) way
9. "The square root of 2," Tom said ____________.

Answer: irrationally

The square root of 2 is an irrational number, so it's safe to say that Tom was speaking irrationally when he talked about the square root of 2.
10. "Everybody, stand in a line by age!" Tom _______.

Answer: ordered

By telling them to stand in a line by age meant that they were being ordered, and Tom ordered them to do this.
