Question 1 of 10
1. The other night, my friends couldn't sleep and so they decided to call me at various times of the night to tell me. My mind is all jumbled from the interruptions to my slumber; can you help me remember who called and when, and the reason for their insomnia? I fear I may lie wide awake tonight wondering!

The friends: Barbara, Carla, Edna, Fiona, Mary
The times: 12:00 a.m. (midnight), 1:00 a.m., 2:00 a.m., 3:00 a.m., 4:00 a.m.
The reasons: caffeine, worry, late exercise, hunger, snoring spouse

The clues (from my fragmented memory):
A - "I was so busy today," said one caller, "that I couldn't do my weightlifting until after supper, and now I'm wired." She told me this some time before Fiona called.

B - The late exerciser called at some point after the person who had drunk ten cups of coffee that evening and was suffering from caffeine overload.

C - Carla called first.

D - Carla is not the one dieting to lose weight and too famished to sleep.

E - Mary called at some point before the coffee-drinker and also at some point before the person suffering from worry (about an upcoming trial).

F - Edna, a Mormon, avoids all stimulant beverages.

E - Mary called at some point before the coffee-drinker and also at some point before the person suffering from worry (about an upcoming trial). F - Edna, a Mormon, avoids all stimulant beverages. ### Question 1 - Who called at midnight?

Answer: Carla

Clue C tells us that Carla called first. The call times range on the hour from 12:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. The first time available is 12:00 a.m. (midnight). This was just simply reading the clues!
2. Who called earlier, Mary or Fiona?

Answer: Mary

Clue E tells us that Mary called before the coffee-drinker. (Coffee contains caffeine).
Clue A tells us that the coffee-drinker called at some point before Fiona.
Therefore, Mary called before Fiona.
3. Who called me at 1:00 a.m.?

Answer: Mary

Clue E tells us that Mary called before the coffee-drinker (coffee contains caffeine).
Clues A and B together tell us that the coffee-drinker called at some point before Fiona AND before the late exerciser.

So Mary has to be first or second since she called before three other people (the coffee-drinker, Fiona, and the late exerciser).
Clue E tells us that Carla is first (midnight).
Therefore, Mary must be second, so she called at 1:00am.
4. Why could Fiona not sleep the other night?

Answer: worry

Carla called before Mary (See Q1 explanation).
Mary called before three other women, as determined in question 3: a coffee-drinker, Fiona, and the late exerciser.

Clue E tells us that Mary called before someone worried about an upcoming trial. That has to be Fiona. Let's hope her trial goes well!

[In other words:
Mary called before the late exerciser and the coffee-drinker (see Q3 explanation) and Clue E tells us she called before the worrier.
So, Fiona did one of those three things.
Clue A tells us that Fiona is not the late exerciser.
Clues A & B together tell us that Fiona cannot be the coffee-drinker. The coffee-drinker called BEFORE the late exerciser (clue B), but Fiona called AFTER the late exerciser (clue A).
That leaves the worrier, who must be Fiona. I told her to trust in her attorney!]
5. And why could Carla not sleep the other night?

Answer: snoring spouse

Clue D tells us that Carla was not kept awake by hunger.
Question 4 tells us that worry is what kept Fiona awake.
Carla called first (question 1 or clue E), which means she is neither the coffee-drinker nor the exerciser, who called sometime after Mary (see Question 3 or review clues E, A, & B).

That leaves only the snoring spouse for Carla. I suggested a visit with a specialist; it could be apnea!
6. Now who was kept awake by hunger?

Answer: Mary

We determined in question 5 that Carla was troubled by the snoring spouse.
We determined in question 4 that Fiona was too worried about her trial to sleep.
We know that neither caffeine nor late exercise kept Mary awake, as she called before either of these sufferers, as determined in question 3.

That means that hunger kept Mary wide awake. I told her if she's too hungry to sleep she should change her eating plan.
7. Who drank too much coffee and called me in a caffeine buzz?

Answer: Barbara

We've already determined...
... hunger kept Mary awake. (question 6) (Also clue E eliminates her).
... a snoring spouse kept Carla awake. (question 5) (also Clues C & E eliminate her).
... worry kept Fiona awake. (question 4)

Clue F tells us Edna did not consume any caffeine.
Therefore, Barbara, the only person left, must be the wide-awake coffee drinker.
8. So, who rang at 2:00 a.m.? (Hint: figure out what the 2 a.m. caller was calling about first.)

Answer: Barbara

We already know...
... Carla rang first, at 12:00 a.m. (clue C), and was kept awake by snoring (question 5).
... Mary rang second, at 1:00 a.m. (question 3), and was kept awake by hunger (question 6).

The caffeine-drinker called before two other people: the late exerciser (clue B) and also before Fiona (clue A). That can only be 2:00am since midnight and 1:00am are taken. We've already determined that Barbara drank the caffeine (question 7), so she's the 2-o'clock caller!
9. And who called me at 3:00 a.m.? (Hint: figure out what the 3 a.m. caller was calling about first.)

Answer: Edna

Clues A & B together tell us that the late exerciser called after the coffee maven but before Fiona.
Questions 7 & 8 told us that the coffee maven, Barbara, called at 2:00a.m.
The only times left are 3:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m., so the only time that fits for the late exerciser is 3:00 a.m..

We've already determined that...
... Fiona suffered from worry
... Carla's spouse snored
... Barbara drank too much coffee
... Mary was hungry from dieting

So the only person left is Edna!
10. And lastly, who called at 4:00 a.m. (the final caller of the night)?

Answer: Fiona

Fiona, worried about her upcoming trial (Question 4), must be last @ 4:00 a.m. because ...
... she called after the late-exercising Edna @ 3:00 a.m. (Question 9),
... who called after coffee-guzzling Barbara @ 2:00 a.m. (Questions 7 & 8),
... who called after hungry Mary @ 1:00 a.m. (Questions 3 & 6),
... who called after Carla, who by midnight could no longer bear her husband's snores! (Questions 1 & 5)

And with that, we have all five friends, the time they called, and why! Now I can get some sleep myself!
