Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sample question: What ONE word goes with Away, Going and Together to form new words or phrases? Choose from OUT, FAR, BRING and GET. The answer is GET. (GETaway, GET Going and GET Together.) Your turn: Which ONE word from the choices below goes with each of the three words listed here to make either a new word or a common phrase? Words (a) Bus (b) Cock (c) Full

Answer: Stop

Although you can have a School Bus, or you may be Cock-Eyed over a Cup Full (actually Cupful) of cheer, only Stop goes with each of the three given words. A Bus Stop is an environmentally friendly place to start your journey to work, and if your sink springs a leask, the Stop-Cock is where you could limit the damage to the kitchen until the plumber fixes the problem.

A Full Stop is a punctuation mark used at the end of a sentence, (known as a period in the USA), but it is also what happens to freeway traffic at the most inconvenient times (mainly when I am late for work).
2. Which ONE of the following words goes with each of the words: (a) Barrage (b) Hot-Air (c) Lead to make a new word or phrase?

Answer: Balloon

Perhaps you have been subjected to a Verbal Barrage at some time, or you have looked for a Hot-Air current when flying a glider, and learnt to use a Lead Pencil when first starting in school, only BALLOON can fit with each of the choices to make Barrage Balloon, Hot-Air Balloon and Lead Balloon.
3. Which ONE word fits with each of the words: (a) Arrival (b) Developer (c) Lunch to make either a new word or phrase?

Answer: Late

Scheduled does fit with Arrival, and you may work as a Property Developer, wooing investors with a Free Lunch, but only LATE fits with each word to make a Late Arrival of a Late Developer to join you in a Late Lunch.
4. Which ONE word fits with each of the words: (a) Breakfast (b) Grain (c) Grass to make either a new word or phrase?

Answer: Cereal

You can have a Late Breakfast, even a Continental Breakfast, but only Breakfast Cereal, Cereal Grain and Cereal Grass have a word in common, namely CEREAL.
5. What is the ONE word which goes with each of the following words to make either a new word or a phrase: Words: (a) Grand (b) Loss (c) Recall

Answer: Total

A Grand Piano is a beautiful instrument, and a Paper Loss may be a worry to a business owner, and a flaw in some new device may lead to a Design Recall, but only TOTAL fits with each word to make Grand Total, Total Loss and Total Recall.
6. Each of the following words will fit with ONE of the listed words, making a new word or phrase. Select the correct word from those given? Words: (a) Nursery (b) Royal (c) Scheme

Answer: Rhyme

Young children always enjoy visiting an Animal Nursery at the Agricultural Show, and PennyRoyal is also known as Squaw Mint, and many people may have been approached online by someone with a Cunning Scheme to make money, but Nursery Rhyme, Rhyme Royal (devised by Geoffrey Chaucer) and Rhyme Scheme (the rhyming pattern of a verse of poetry) each have the word RHYME in common.
7. Which ONE word of those choices below goes with each of these words to make a common word or phrase? (a) Bull (b) Eater (c) Hill

Answer: Ant

A Bullant is a rather large ant, an ANTeater is a mammal which does just that and an ANThill is found around many ant homes. Nest does not fit with any of the given words, Fussy fits only with Eater and Steep belongs only with Hill. ANT is the only word to fit with all three given words.
8. Given the three words: (a) Athletics (b) Boxing (c) Rank which ONE of these words fits with all three to make new words or phrase?

Answer: Amateur

You may have an Athletics Meeting, and see a contest in a Boxing Ring which could be won by a Rank Outsider, but only the phrases AMATEUR Athletics, AMATEUR Boxing and Rank AMATEUR share the same word.
9. Which ONE word fits with each of the following words to make a new word or phrase? (a) Fore (b) Upon (c) Abouts

Answer: There

Although Forefront and Forehead are words, Foreset is not. Set upon is a phrase but only THERE goes with each of the given words to make THEREFORE, THEREUPON and THEREABOUTS.
10. Which ONE word from the choices below goes with each of the three words listed here to make either a new word or a common phrase? (a) Lipped (b) Rope (c) Sleep

Answer: Tight

A TIGHT-LIPPED person will never reveal secrets, and though they way walk a TIGHTROPE in so doing, they can SLEEP TIGHT knowing they have not broken confidence. Each of the other options seems to go only with one of the options (THIN-LIPPED, ROPE LADDER and DEEP SLEEP).
