Robert Keeshan was born on June 27, 1927 in Long Island, New York to immigrant parents. He had a younger sister and two older brothers. Mr. Keeshan passed away on January 23, 2004 in his Vermont home. He would have been 77 years old on June 27, 2004.

Mr. Keeshan was Clarabell the Clown on "The Howdy Doody Show" from 1947 until 1950 when he got fired. Gil Lamb replaced him but only for a short while. The Clown Hall of Fame inducted Bob Keeshan as a member in 1990. In August 1986, the Clown Hall of Fame & Research Center, Inc, proposed they build a museum to spotlight the art and history of clowning. The first office of the Clown Hall of Fame opened in February 1986 in Delavan, Wisconsin. Shortly after, the building where the office was located became the museum.

In August 1988, during National Clown Week, the first six inductees were announced, Red Skeleton, Lou Jacobs, Emmett Kelly, Sr., Mark Anthony, Felix Abler and Otto Griebling and in April 1989, they were officially inducted into the Clown Hall of Fame.
