Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Altman has had better luck at the Cannes Film Festival than at the Oscars. During the 1970s, which or who was NOT a winner?

Answer: Best Director: Robert Altman for "Nashville"

Altman did go on to win Best Director at Cannes in 1992 for "The Player."
2. In "M*A*S*H", what luxury item did Trapper (Elliott Gould) pull out of his parka pocket that surpised Hawkeye (Donald Sutherland) and Duke (Tom Skerrit)?

Answer: a jar of olives

To think they'd been having plain martini's all that time!
3. Which film came from an Altman dream?

Answer: Three Women

Altman saw a film by his protege, Alan Rudolph, "Welcome To L.A.", starring, among others, Sissy Spacek. He had a dream with her and Shelley Duvall and turned it into a film. As of this date, it is the only one other than "Images" he has scripted entirely alone (not necessarily an entirely positive thing)!
4. Which actress did not write all or part of her dialogue for the film mentioned?

Answer: Sissy Spacek: "Three Women"

Ronee Blakley wrote Barbara Jean's "crack-up" scene (as well as her songs, but those don't count as dialogue, of course). Susannah York reads portions of a children's book she wrote/was writing in real life. (I'm saving that title for another quiz!) Shelley Duvall wrote large portions of her dialogue, as well as her diary entries. Sissy Spacek was not much of an improviser, and did not contribute to her dialogue, but nonetheless gave a wonderful performance.
5. What did Jeff Goldblum have to learn for his role in "Nashville"?

Answer: Magic tricks

Goldblum only did 1 or 2 tricks in the film although he learned more. I've never heard him mention he didn't already know how to ride the motorcycle. And...well...he actually does not sing or speak at all during the entire film, which means he has even fewer lines than his one-word speech in "Annie Hall"!
6. Which Altman film was not shot by the great cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond?

Answer: Thieves Like Us

Jean Boffety shot "Thieves Like Us". "McCabe And Mrs. Miller" may have my favorite cinematography of any film ever. They "pre-flashed" the film stock to achieve the old-time look, and the contrast between the golden indoor scenes and the snowy white Vancouver exteriors is stunning. All three Zsigmond films are magnificent visually, a creative high point for him and Altman.
7. In "Three Women", which delectable item did NOT appear on the menu of Millie's (Shelley Duvall) dinner party?

Answer: world-famous tuna casserole

Millie referred to her dinner parties as "famous", but sadly, her guests blew her off. I didn't even mention the Cheez Whiz that Pinky (Sissy Spacek) tried to squirt on the "Sociable Crackers".
8. In "Health", what famous talk show host watched "The Tonight Show" before he went to sleep every night?

Answer: Dick Cavett

Cavett played himself, hosting his show from a fictional health convention. Susskind was actually the executive producer of "Buffalo Bill And The Indians". While "Health" is not Altman's greatest film, it contains what may be Carol Burnett's greatest screen performance. I love her dearly, but I feel she did all her best film work for Altman.
9. In "The Player" which actor pitched the film (along with Dean Stockwell) that we saw-in a competely corrupted version-at the end of the movie? He went on to appear in "Gosford Park".

Answer: Richard E. Grant

All of these actors were in "Gosford Park". Balaban was also the executive producer and credited with the story idea along with Altman. Grant, besides these two films, also appeared in Altman's "Ready To Wear" aka "Pret A Porter".
10. Which "Short Cuts" actress turned down the part played by Julianne Moore because she was uncomfortable with the "bottomless" scene, but ironically appeared topless in the film?

Answer: Madeleine Stowe

Stowe and Moore played sisters and we saw Stowe posing for Moore, whose character was a painter. Moore's humorous response on taking the part was, "That's not a problem, Bob. And I have a surprise. I'm a real redhead."
