9. Carol Burnett is probably one of my favorite actresses/comediennes of all time. Can you tell me what her very first Broadway success was, in 1959, that featured her as a princess-to-be?

Answer: Once Upon A Mattress

For her role as Princess Winnifred, in the Broadway hit "Once Upon A Mattress", Carol Burnett was nominated for a Tony Award.

The play, a musical comedy loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, "The Princess and the Pea" began as an off-Broadway musical but very quickly found its way onto Broadway.

The play centered around the concept of an evil queen who wanted her son to get married, but no one was deemed good enough for him, (at least by her standards). Finally, one girl was found who gave her a run for her money, Princess Winnifred, played in the 1959 production by Carol Burnett.

A young girl named 'Karen Burnett' was Carol's early childhood imagination running wild. In second grade, she "invented" a twin sister named Karen. Carol amused herself at her grandmother's boarding house by pretending to be her own twin; first appearing as herself; then as her twin, by rapidly changing her clothing to befuddle and confuse the guests. Eventually she grew tired of the game, and Karen quietly disappeared.
