Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The character James Bond has always been the tall rugged type, all actors except one being taller than 6 feet (183cm). Which actor, from "Dr No" (1962) to "Skyfall" (2012), was the shortest Bond?

Answer: Craig

When Daniel Craig was appointed as the next James Bond, there was some criticism as Daniel Craig was the first Bond to be less than six feet tall. Craig comes in at 178 cm (5' 10"). The next shortest was Roger Moore at 185cm (6'1"). Craig was also criticised for his blond hair (at least it was his own: Sean Connery wore a toupee in "Dr No" (1962)). However the criticism seemed to evaporate after Craig turned in a stunning, visceral performance in his debut performance as Bond in "Casino Royal" (2006).
2. James Bond is meant to be a suave Englishman but only two of the six actors who played Bond for the fifty years between "Dr No" (1962) and "Skyfall" (2012), are actually English. What was the chronological order of the nationality (by birth) of the Bond actors? (Hint: Roger Moore and Daniel Craig are the only Englishmen)

Answer: Scot, Australian, English, Welsh, Irish, English

It seems quite incomprehensible that five nationalities have passed themselves off as a very English Englishman, though it is a credit to their acting abilities that each mastered the accent or at least masked their original accent. (When Lazenby's Bond character had to impersonate a Sir Hilary Bray, an upper class British lord, Lazenby's faint but unmistakable Australian accent was overdubbed).

Interestingly Ian Fleming, in his later 007 novels, described Bond as the son of a Scottish farmer (but these details were revealed in novels published after 1962 when Fleming had seen Connery play Bond on the screen in "Dr No" (1962).

The correct Bond order is Connery, Lazenby, Moore, Dalton, Brosnan and Craig. However Connery returned for two more movies after Lazenby's single movie, before handing over to Moore.
3. In Ian Fleming's "James Bond" novels, Bond does not age. He stays in his mid-late 30s. This is not the case in the movies. In "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (1969), the Bond actor was only 30 yet in "A View to a Kill" (1985), the Bond actor was 57. Who plays Bond in "A View to a Kill" (1985)?

Answer: Moore

Lazenby was only 30 when "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (1969) was released. Connery was 32 when he starred in "Dr No" (1962), Dalton was 41 on debut, Brosnan was 42, Craig was 38 and Moore was 45 (and 57 when he played his final role in 1985).
4. If the first six Bond actors met on the set of "Skyfall" in 2012, some of the Bond actors would have been getting a bit long in the tooth. Which Bond actor, of the six, was born first? (Careful!)

Answer: Moore

The first 24 "James Bond" movies spanned fifty years, therefore you would expect a similar span between dates of births of Bond actors and indeed there was; Moore was born in 1927, Sean Connery in 1930, Lazenby in 1939, Dalton in 1946, Brosnan in 1953 and Craig was born in 1968, 41 years after Moore.
5. The Aston-Martin has been synonymous with "James Bond" movies, representing the epitome of the British sports car befitting the masculine image of James Bond. Which actor(s), from the options below, did not get to drive an Aston-Martin during his tenure as James Bond?

Answer: Moore

Moore completed seven movies, one more than Connery, three more than Brosnan, four more than Craig (at the time of "Skyfall"), five more than Dalton, and six more than Lazenby, yet he was the only one of the six who did not drive an Aston Martin.
The Aston Martin DB5 was first driven by Connery in "Goldfinger" (1964) and "Thunderball" (1965), but was also driven by Brosnan in "Goldeneye" (1995) and "Tomorrow Never Dies" (1997) and Craig in "Casino Royale" (2006) and "Skyfall" (2012).
The Aston Martin DBS was driven by Lazenby in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (1969).
Dalton drove an Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante in "The Living Daylights" (1987)
Brosnan also drove a Aston Martin V12 Vanquish in "Die Another Day" (2002)
Craig also drove an Aston Martin DBS12 in "Casino Royale" (2006) and "Quantum of Solace" (2008).
Moore did get to drive an Aston Martin in a movie, in a DB5 model at that, but it wasn't a "Bond". It was in a movie called "The Cannonball Run" (1981) where his character, Seymour, impersonated Roger Moore and pretended to be like the James Bond character he was playing in at the same time in the "Bond" movie franchise.
6. From the first movie, "Dr No" (1962) to the 23rd, Skyfall" (2012), James Bond is portrayed as the eligible bachelor stereotype, except in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (1969), where Bond's marital status changed twice in the same movie. What was the marital status of the actor that played Bond in 1969 when this movie was released?

Answer: Single

In "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (1969), Bond is played by George Lazenby. Sticking closely to the plot of the corresponding novel, Lazenby's character marries Tracy di Vicenzo, only daughter of a Corsican mobster, who is killed on the first day of their honeymoon making Bond a widower. Lazenby was single until he married in 1973.
7. James Bond is generally played as a single playboy type. Conversely only one of the Bond actors was not married, for at least some of the time each played Bond. In fact, during the fifty year span of "James Bond" movies between "Dr No (1962) and "Skyfall" (2012), this Bond actor never married. Which Bond actor was he?

Answer: Dalton

Connery and Moore were married for their nine and twelve year spans as Bond respectively: Connery to first wife Australian actress, Diane Cilento; Moore to his third wife, Luisa Mattioli. Brosnan was a widower when he played Bond for the first time in 1995.

He married Cassandra Harris, an Australian actress in 1980 and she died from cancer at just 43 in 1991. In 1994, he met American Journalist, Keely Shaye Smith and married her in 2001, one year before his fourth and last Bond role in "Die Another Day" (2002). Craig divorced his first wife, Fiona Loudon in 1994 after a two year marriage.

He married English actress Rachel Weisz in 2011 a year before he filmed "Skyfall". Conversely, George Lazenby did not get married until 1973, four years after his only outing as Bond.

He married Chrissie Townsend but divorced in 1995. He married tennis player Pam Shriver for six years between 2002 and 2008. Whilst Dalton had a 15 year relationship with Vanessa Redgrave from 1971-1986, he had never married in the fifty year span of "James Bond" movies between "Dr No (1962) and "Skyfall" (2012).
8. If Academy Awards are a measure of the success of a movie, then "Skyfall" (2012) was the most successful "James Bond" movie out of the 23 that preceded it, having been nominated for five awards and winning two. Which of the first six Bond actors, between "Dr No" (1962) and "Skyfall" (2012), was nominated for playing Bond?

Answer: None

The sad fact is that until "Skyfall" (2012), collectively, "James Bond" movies were nominated seven times for technical awards, winning two (the last time in 1965) but not once was a Bond actor even nominated. "Skyfall" was nominated for five awards, winning two, both technical awards. Perhaps the Bond actor du jour should have sung. The most popular category Bond movies have been nominated in was Best Original Song with four nominations and one win. At least Brosnan tried to sing in "Mamma Mia" (2008).
9. Some questions are untouchable because they dare you to stop and think. This might just be one of those questions. Hypothetically, if the first six Bond actors met on the set of "Skyfall" in 2012 (to decide once and for all who was the best Bond actor) AND they decided the best actor would be decided by who had the most career Oscars (Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor). Which Bond actor won?

Answer: Connery

Sad isn't it? After so much entertainment provided by six actors over fifty years, only one of the six, Connery was subsequently awarded an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, in 1988 for "The Untouchables". None of the six won an Oscar prior to becoming Bond either. Maybe fans should take solace in the fact that "Bond" films were generally produced in the UK and all six actors have won British and European acting awards, despite the dearth of Oscars.
10. During the fifty year period from "Dr No" (1962) to "Skyfall" (2012), in a case of life imitating art, a Bond actor married a Bond girl. Cassandra Harris played Lisl in "For Your Eyes Only" in 1981, a year after Harris married this Bond actor who made his debut as Bond, fifteen years later in "GoldenEye" (1995). Which Bond actor was this?

Answer: Brosnan

Dalton never married in this time period. Connery was the first Bond. Moore first played Bond in 1973, eleven years after the franchise started in 1962. Therefore only Brosnan could have married a "Bond" girl and indeed he did. He married Cassandra Harris in 1980; she played Countess Lisl von Schlaf, in "For Your Eyes Only" (1981).

It was while Brosnan was visiting Harris on set when he met the "Bond" producers and fourteen years later...
