Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With what phrase does Chico confuse the word 'viaduct'?

Answer: why a duck

This interminably funny scene in 'Cocoanuts' inspired the title of a wonderful picture book about the fab three-and-a-half.
2. Which actress spent a goodly portion of her career being 'goosed' by the Marx Brothers, and is sometimes termed the 'honorary fourth/fifth/sixth Marx Brother', depending on the context?

Answer: Margaret Dumont

Margaret Dumont's characters fell in love with Groucho's on numerous occasions, were punched in the stomach by Harpo, sharped at cards by Chico and Harpo, and had house party after house party ruined by their combined antics. The poor dear never really understood their brand of humour - and it is to this fact that Groucho attributed the success of their professional relationship.
3. Probably the most aped gag in comedy history, in which film does the Marx Brothers' shining (not original, sadly) 'mirror scene' appear?

Answer: Duck Soup

It is in this film that one begins to appreciate just how uncannily alike the brothers really were. When Harpo and Chico both dress as Groucho and each of the three walks in succession into Margaret Dumont's suite, it is only by the accent (or lack of speech) that we can tell them apart.

As a teenager, Harpo lost his job playing one-handed piano in a dodgy bar because the furious owner believed whole-heartedly that he was Chico.
4. The Marx Brothers' second-most prolific co-star was a Hamburg-born German actor whose red-faced fury at their antics was discernible even on black-and-white film. What was his name?

Answer: Sig Ruman

Sig Ruman (a.k.a. Siegfried Rumann and Sig Rumann) twice played Groucho's rival for the romantic attentions of Margaret Dumont (in 'A Night at the Opera' and 'A Day at the Races') and once a Nazi serial-killer on the hunt for confiscated war treasure (in 'A Night in Casablanca'). No audience to a Marx Brothers' film starring him can help but sympathise with Groucho's admonition: 'Don't point that beard at me - it might go off' - for Ruman sported a meticulously sculptured and very pointed ginger beard. Walter Woolf King starred as the puffed-up opera star Rudolfo Lasparri in 'A Night at the Opera' and Giermann played Ruman's sword-brandishing henchman Kurt in 'A Night in Casablanca'. Karloff, of course, sadly never starred in a Marx Brothers picture.
5. Who made history beating Harpo at his own game by shedding cutlery onstage whilst shaking the actor's hand at a London gala performance?

Answer: The Prince of Wales

A huge and self-confessed fan, the Prince of Wales managed what few people ever did: wrong-footing the quick-witted comic. One of Harpo's favourite gags (first seen in the film 'Animal Crackers') involved stuffing his left sleeve with silverware and releasing it, bit by bit, in a clanging, clattering shower when his other hand was shaken.

His Highness was the last person from whom Harpo might have expected such a prank.
6. In 'Monkey Business', whom did Chico claim had been his father's business partner?

Answer: Columbus

Near the beginning of the film, Groucho and Chico hide in the office adjoining the captain's quarters. Here Groucho attempts a quickie geography lesson, frustrated constantly by Chico's deliberate misunderstandings: 'Dat's Columbus Circle'.
7. Why is Groucho unqualified to run the sanatorium in 'A Day at the Races'?

Answer: He's a vet

Specifically, Dr Hugo Z. Hackenbush is a horse doctor.
8. Despite lacking a costume at the fancy-dress ball for debutante Ruth Hall, in 'Monkey Business' Groucho manages to steal a cowboy hat and attempts to court a woman whose consequently livid husband is dressed as______?

Answer: An Indian (as in an indigenous American person, not one from Asia)

The Mangy Lover tries his hand with Thelma Todd as well, whose character's husband is, ironically enough, a gangster (certain conspiracy theories surrounding Todd's mysterious death include the involvement of her alleged boyfriend, mobster Lucky Luciano).
9. In the courtroom scene from 'Duck Soup', which of the following puns is not made?

Answer: 'One day we shadow him all day... Shadowday!' (Saturday)

This is one of the most pun-filled scenes ever. With regard to the word 'eliminate', Chico says he'll take some... 'Some what?' 'Eliminate. A nice cool glass eliminate!' (Lemonade)
10. In 'Animal Crackers', which of the following does Harpo not steal from Abie the Fish Pedlar, a.k.a. Roscoe W. Chandler?

Answer: A cheque for five hundred dollars

Harpo doesn't bother with the cheque since he knows it's worthless: when he drops it, it bounces!
